That girl who trades you aerodactly for a chansey is the most sentient NPC ever, and even that brief interaction with her gave me a strange pang of personal connection, the kind of feeling a dog must feel when he sees another dog while on a walk... First of all, she has a specific goal, to find a chansey, and she's actually out there in the long grass, pacing back and forth looking for it. She even gives us her subjective reason for wanting it; because it's cute. Second of all, shes searching in the one spot where chansey actually spawns, which mean she's already done the necessary research to find out where to get it. One must imagine how many wild pokemon encounters she's had to deal with in the grass there, searching tirelessly for a chansey. Additionally, when she sees you, she takes the initiative not only to tell you about her goal, but to try and make a deal with you to get what she wants. She offers to trade with you, which, that alone makes her more proactive than 95% of trainers in the game. And then, to top it off, the thing she offers to trade with you is an aerodactyl of all things. An extinct pokemon. The only way to get that is to find a fossil, take it to cinnabar and bring it to life. Having an aerodactyl in her party makes my mind race with visions of the adventures she must have gone on to acquire that. The amount of main character energy exuding from that brief encounter is amazing.
Johto is going to be easy after beating Kanto. Faukner's even weaker than Gen I Brock. Then again, since you first arrived at New Bark Town after entering the Hall of Fame, I wonder if there'd be any glitches? Will you have to pick your Johto starter? If so, what happens if you pick your starter when you already got a full team of six? Had the developers thought so much about hackers and cheaters that they programmed what's supposed to be your FIRST Pokémon to go into the PC or have Professor Elm tell you you don't have room?
@@SeanWheeler100 Those are some really interesting questions. I would love to see someone explore that. My guess is that the new starter would go straight to the PC since that's what tends to happen when you don't have room for a gift Pokémon
Yeah, like everyone expecting a fast forward to a Red fight and he's just nope it's the post-game switcheroo. That's a good example of how to subvert expectations if I've ever seen one.
@@MoneyHoneyBunny no, it's basically open world. You can visit every city from the beginning and fight the gyms in any order, and the levels scale with your progress.
For those who want to know, Aerodactyl is in a 4 way tie for 2nd fastest pokemon in Gen 2; tied with Mewtwo, Crobat, and Jolteon, all 4 of which have a base speed of 130. The fastest being Electrode, with a base speed of 140 (prior to Gen 7)
@@hillhank3070 oh I know. But you said prior to Gen 7. Oh, hang on. I see another way that comment could have been interpreted. You meant that electrode's speed was 140 prior to generation 7. (In generation 7, it became 150, as we both know.) I thought you were saying he was the fastest prior to gen 7. My bad.
Its strange that with no badge an over level pokemon do as he wants. Except starting in kanto gives you the advantage like having all the johto gyms badges 😓
@@AleM2287 That's actually not something that happened until recently! In old games, only traded Pokémon would disobey if they were overleveled. I think they started making all overleveled Pokémon disobey in Sword/Shield because you could stumble into really strong Pokémon early on (intentionally) for one of the first times.
This challenge was amazing! Your strategy was really on point, the baton pass + bitter berry play was great. I’m also really glad Sentret made it to the hall of fame ❤
@@TheBeggies95 Yeah, but they decided to make that a Kanto purist adventure by only having the 151 Pokémon with no future evolutions but also included mega evolution and Alolan forms
I do love watching these challenges. I wish I could have told my kid self you would find people as passionate about these games on RU-vid in the future
there is something about pokemon crystal that makes me so insanely nostalgic. i love the johto remakes and i love the newer games but crystal's style, the sounds, the colours... makes me want to play it again
Crystal was my first Pokémon game and holds a special place in my heart. It isn't the best Pokémon game I've played but I feel a certain warmth when I think of it.
@@AdmiralKnusperbacke Mine neither, but I still hold Crystal dear, great memories. Though as nostalgic as Crystal (or any Gen 2 game really) is, it just makes me want to play SS/HG after about 1-2 hours into a fresh game, and for that Soul Silver and Black 2 never get old for me and thats only reason I keep my DS emulator saved along with the roms to my external drive. I havent played any of the mon games after Gen V as I'm in my late 30's now and could careless about them, but I still often revist Crystal, SS and B2. Just so damn fun, simplistic giddy fun.
Legit one of the best runs I've ever seen, there were so many good plays here. My jaw dropped at the berserk gene/baton pass/bitter berry strategy, that was genius. Your entire team EARNED those spots in the hall of fame, especially the myth, the legend, the GOAT, Sentret.

Every great battle involves a sacrifice of pawns, a General barely surviving his battles, and when the enemy sends in a dragon, you respond with a dragon of your own with a chaotic clash at the end.
Luckily you can play jotho with a houndour in your team in heart gold and soul silver. You can find all the gen 2 exclusive to Kanto pokemon in the safari zone. I love to get larvitar before the league.
@@nintonintendo1 Sadly, to be able to encounter Houndour in the Safari Zone, you need to use the "blocks" feature, which is only unlocked after becoming the champion. Here's the list of Pokemon that were previously available only in Kanto that can be found in Johto Safari Zone *without any blocks:* - Cubone - Clefairy - Mr. Mime - Misdreavus - Murkrow - Grimer - Larvitar - Kangaskhan - Farfetch'd Additionally, the new routes leading to Safari Zone give you Diglett and trade-less Steelix, while Primo gives you a Slugma egg in Violet City (if you give him the right code). This makes Houndour/doom and Sneasel the only Gen 2 Pokemon that can't be found before postgame.
@@robertlupa8273 actually you can unlock blocks before becoming the champion. You just have to do the first baoba quest and then wait a day. I know because I have a team with pupitar before beating the league
@@nintonintendo1 You can get Larvitar without blocks. By the way, by "blocks" I mean "placable objects", not "different areas." _"After the player has both _*_received the National Pokédex_*_ from Professor Oak, and 3 hours of gameplay have passed after completion of Baoba's second challenge, Baoba will call the player to tell them that he has come up with a new idea for the Safari Zone. After receiving this call, the player will be able to place blocks in each active area of the Safari Zone."_ - Bulbapedia
What a good idea! And also kinda demonstrates how Kanto could actually have been more of a challenge in 2nd/4th gen. Would be a great idea for the then to revisit. Wishing really hard for a copy, I haven’t been able to get it and it was tight year money-wise. Happy Christmas everyone 🫶
I've done a similar concept to this before in a run-through of Crystal Clear. Chose a gen 2 starter, but started in Pallet Town. This run was dope to watch! Hope to see more gen 2 content from this channel.
Honest to god I VERY MUCH doubted it was possible but watching you use pokemon normally under-used like Mr. Mime and do baton pass strats etc was funny and refreishing, amazing video!
Slightly unrelated, but whenever I see pretty much anything in Johto, I get flashbacks to _loads_ of creepypastas. Rival? Lost Silver. Unown? Lost Silver. Feraligatr? Lost Silver IT'S ALL LOST FRICKIN SILVER-
I'd love a Gen 2 ROM Hack that starts you in Kanto with levels adjusted for it, you battle to the Elite 4, and then the whole Gold/Silver storyline is postgame and gets very high level.
Have you heard of crystal clear? You can challenge gyms in any order, and trainers scale, so you can start in Kanto, do all of those gyms first, and then go to Johto to do those
@@Yominication is that how it works? I've been debating on actually downloading it but I want to do Pokemon from gen1 -gen3 in one game. That would be cool. Do you know of a Romhack that's like thatM
@@l0lan00b3 You can pretty much start on any city from kanto and jotho, it's amazing. The game scales accordingly to your badges so you can make your own route. it's basically non linear pokémon crystal
I'm genuinely impressed. You deserved a standing ovation for this. In fact, I actually _did_ stand up when I gave you some congratulatory claps after beating Lance.
Wow! I had followed your old Zombies content and then never again. I'm glad to have found your Pokémon content however because this is amongst the best I've ever seen! I have just subbed again, keep it up man!
Fuscia Blockade is cleared by surfing up into the city. The game wants you to go to the power plant and radio tower and do all that, move the Snorlax, and then surf to Cinnabar from Pallet. Fuscia to Cinnabar is blocked until you’ve gone Cinnabar to Fuscia
Oh, this is a damn cool challenge. Kanto always feels like it's breeze'd over during challenges like this in Johto, so it's nice to see it getting the spotlight
You rode Senti’s face you better put him in the hall of fame! This reminds me of my copy of Crystal Clear as well as you can go either way to start the game. This was great to watch while I spent Christmas morning in the hospital. Thank you for the smiles❤️
Commenting before I finish watching: This feels like a really simple & accessible, yet underdone premise! It's just a shame the Johto games are the only ones with a 2nd region like this. Will comment more later! Thanks for uploading!
Crystal was the first pokenon game i played as a kid. I remember how little effort it took to rule over Kanto. Now I get it, they had memory limits to the content they could squeeze in, but i wish you needed to have more thought instead of overpowering everything. Great video!
This is such a cool concept! I love this so much! I'm actually playing through the post-game of Crystal right now, and actually found a Lucky Egg Chansey on my second Chansey encounter. Even crazier is that I found a shiny Noctowl during that hunt!
I also started Crystal some weeks ago, got myself a decent team. I was even trying to breed a shiny Pokemon using the shiny Gyarados. Never got a shiny and I could not even find myself a Chansey and here you are with a Chansey, a Lucky Egg on your second Chainsey encounter and a shiny Noctowl... You beat me. How much time did you spend for finding a Chainsey with a Lucky Egg and your shiny?
if you really want to get the most out of crystal pair it with pokemon stadium 2 i loved trading pokemon over to beat the hard R2 content in stadium as a kid
I once did a similar run of Crystal where I played like normal until I reached Goldenrod then used a walk through walls cheat to take the train to Kanto and even then it was still quite difficult but pretty fun. Though I warn you, the "Johto post game" gets bugged and the Team Rocket Radio Tower event never triggers for some reason so you can't finish it
Because the "Lore Time system" and thus the city versions that'll be loaded are Gym badge dependent. Or simply said you'll basically reach Goldenrod too "late"...
YO!!!!!! THIS WAS HYPE AF!!! I was so invested in this and got hype several times. Shout out to the fam Sentret. He's the real mvp for taking the hits for the rest of the crew!
I Loved watching you play Minecraft and for some reason I've been super nostalgic watching the old pokémon games and single pokémon playthroughs. So thank you for the grade A Entertainment and keep up the good work!
Dude, you had me glued to my screen the entire time. What an awesome run and mod! Gen 2’s my favourite so I loved it even more ❤And your bezerk gene-baton pass-rawst combo was sick! Plus I forgive your double route catch 😅 Glad I was subbed to you so I didn’t miss this! Keep the content coming, and Merry Xmas!
Blue's Arcanine using roar on Aerodactyl just to swap in Tentacruel named "*LOL*" was quite literally the greatest thing to happen in all of human existence! Woooow!😂😂😭💀
I just discovered you with this video. I liked it a lot: I was intrigued by this idea I hadn't seen before, and I enjoyed your narration style. For whatever it's worth, you got me to subscribe!
Nifty! Now I can't get the image of how to properly surf on a sentret. Belly up, foot on head, foot on tail. Thanks for the funniest image I've had in my head all week, happy holidays!
I was waiting on hold for my tax returns while I was watching videos, and came across this. I finally was connected half way through, and then resumed when I was done. The improvised planning and meticulous execution makes this one my my favorite videos I've seen, that's not something I say often.
Your Pokémon journey is starting, trainer Pat! I'm really looking forward to more Pokémone content with Zombies at the side! xP Have a good one, lad! Happy New Year!
