Pokemon Advertised As Legendary 

What is your favorite fake legendary? ....Do I need to say mine?

To be fair the method to originally get Spiritomb was LEGENDARILY ridiculous in the original Diamond and Pearl games if you didn't know that many people.

No Spiritomb? It doesn’t evolve, it has super mysterious lore, it has fancy means of obtaining it designed entirely for it alone, it has a super complex design… I always thought it was a legendary as a kid.

I still consider Mythicals to be a group within Legendaries, not separate from Legendaries. All Mythicals are Legendaries, not all Legendaries are Mythicals.

In fairness though, I actually think it makes sense for the term “Legendary” to be used incorrectly and inconsistently in universe. As the term implies, they aren’t meant to be neatly classified into scientific categories, they are by nature legends. Heatran, for example, is a technically considered a legendary, but it’s really just a powerful and rare base form nonlegendary pokemon, as evidenced by the fact it can be either male or female, and thus can breed. Yet despite this, even if we scientifically classify it as a nonlegendary pokemon, it will still have legends about it. I honestly think that’s an interesting part of lore, but maybe that’s just me. Edit: Also, whoever made the mistake of labeling Delibird a Legendary Pokemon… I just have no words…

I think Unown are meant to be a sort of "code" that Arceus uses to build the universe. Which is why the ones in the third movie were capable of creating a new world around them, and why they're flying around chaotically in the DP movie when Dialga and Palkia are fighting in the beginning, like they're tearing apart space-time.

Rotom is the only one that I truly wish had “stayed” a legendary.

Volcarona is so majestic that they deserve to be an legendary

Honestly Rotom and Volcarona feel more like a Legendary Pokemon than Type:Null does!

Fun fact in gen 4 and 5 randomizers at least for a decent time period, if you were to encounter your suicune static encounter in HGSS, Or just found a roaming or literally any legendary Pokemon there was a chance the legend would be a rotom because of the fact in the games code it is given the values similar to a legendary, some also say the same happened with Spiritomh as well. Meaning you could easily lose your box legend to a Rotom or Spiritomb or turn something kinda crappy like the swords of justice or birds Into something pretty good in Rotom. Also Volcarona For Legendary Status.

Cyclizar was a fake legendary before the release of Scarlet and Violet, since almost everyone thought that it was the pre-evolution of Koraidon and Miraidon (whose status as legendaries is also debatable lore-wise). I wonder if the situation is the same with the Baby Terapagos.

When I was a child, I though Absol was a Legendary. Absol.

I still remember going to the Haunted Chateau in Pokemon Platinum and encountering Rotom then when I caught it I was excited to catch a Legendary Pokemon! Then as I got older well I found out Rotom isn't a Legendary Pokemon still a cool Pokemon none the less.

I think Phione needs to be mythical since it comes from a mythical Pokémon and the whole point of mythical is that there’s no proof they’re real they’re myths

When gen 4 first came out my friends and I all thought Lucario was a legendary because of the movie! So when we saw Maylene send one out we were bamboozled as to why a gym leader was using a legendary 😂

Arcanine is probably one of my favorite "legendaries," and it's Hisuian form is basically it's mega evolution.

1:00 and the Manga states Rotom as Legendary as well. Unknown is classified as Legendary in LeafGreens Pokedex as well, for some reason.

I thought Rotom was legendary as a kid purely because of the battle intro when you encounter it

I seem to recall a story about the trio birds and Arcainine and the reason it was a legendry pokemon. Something about the 3 birds being so far apart and arcainine being the only pokemon that could move fast enough across the country to confront them, so fast it could run on water.

These Pokémon get so hyped up with movies and events. Game Freak needs to be clearer with what is Legendary and what isn't...

God I wish Spiritomb had a higher BST because it feels so much like a Legendary in the way you obtain it, its appearance, its lore, etc. It may not officially be a legendary but it will always be one to me.

Alomomola is also false advertising, but in a different way. The way in which Alomomola serves as false advertising is that its similarities to Luvdisc make it look like it would be an evolution for Luvdisc, even though it isn't. False advertising is one of the worst things you can do when making a form of media.

Unown does also have an association with Suicune and Ho-oh in-game in Crystal version. In the intro for Suicune, and knowing of and needing Ho-oh to unlock secrets at the Ruins of Alph for Ho-oh. Top that with the associations with Entei and Arceus, and the mysteries and legends surrounding them, that's quite a lot.

I have always considered Rotom a legendary and I feel as though he was originally intended to be. Originally, there was only 1 per game, he had legendary battle music, he was grouped with the rest of the legends at the end of the Pokédex, he has all his different forms etc. I feel like later on they decided against it

Sure, Manaphy can breed, but it can only produce Phione, and Phione can't breed. Since you cannot obtain a Manaphy by breeding, Manaphy is still mythical. Phione is also still a mythical by proxy, as you need Manaphy to get Phione (excluding the side quest in PLA, but you get Manaphy there anyway).

I honestly think the term “Legendary pokémon” has lost its consistent meaning for many years, its confusion starting in gen 4 & made worse gen 7 onwards. If I could give standards for legendary pokémon, they are: - have a low population number(around 100 at maximum) - has legends around or about them that are still believed - must be stronger than most normal pokémon - has a god-like role in the world’s existence or great feats of power even in their franchise Some exceptions to this would include many mythicals, the legendary beast & golems. Others like the legendary birds, Heatran, Kubfu & Silvally line should be stripped of their title. Heck, the last one is literally being mass-produced.

FireRed and LeafGreen has Unown in the Legendary section of its weird Pokédex

It basically boils down to whatever Pokemon the company would want to label. There are enough inconsistencies that there is no single defining metric that will label a Pokemon Legendary/Mythical.

"Flame" in '2.B.A. Master' is the Fire-type's Japanese name. 'Hajimari no Uta' mentioned "Bird" and "Gas" where the former is the glitch type, and the later does not exist as a type.

I still have my Pokémon ultimate handbook I looked in it and in mine the “Legendary Pokémon” under rotoms name and plasma Pokémon wasn’t there even though everything else was the same

Back in the days of gen2 there was this understanding with my friends that celebi was connected to the unown and that in fact it was the controller of them. I believe there was a magazine that had a feature on both of them ,also I think it also called the unown legendary I think, but why we thought they where connected I can not remember what the article said but maybe because they were on the same pag we just assumed.

I still believe that half of these Pokemon are at least mythical and no one can tell me otherwise.

In the Ultimate Handbook, there's actually a section in the back which lists out every legendary Pokemon, and it's all accurate except for Rotom being included, so that's probably where a lot of others who had that handbook thought Rotom was a legendary from it

As a kid I couldn’t decide if Rotom was a legendary or not. I still don’t know which way I see it 😅 I lean towards special but not legendary. I don’t know how I feel about the mythical group yet

Lucario will always be a legendary in my heart. Although I am a little disappointed that Legends Arceus didn’t do more with Unown. It’s like they want it to remains mysterious and cryptic, but if there’s no actual mystery then it just feels forced.

Unown are in the legendary Pokemon category of Firered and Leafgreen

3:57 Scarlet/Violet's code also lists Shiinotic (マシェード MASHEEDO) as a Mythical instead of Marshadow (シャドー MAASYADOO), so it's not exactly perfect. They could've just listed Phione as a Mythical by mistake (although I don't deny the possibility of it being intentional).

My favorite is Volcorona. When I saw it for the first time, I was so excited. Thought it was a legend for years

for the anime for Arcanine, I like to believe that ot wasn't only meant to show the legendary birds but just another legendary pokemon that was meant to be on its own and have no relation to the birds, but later was scrapped since they fought that having 6 would be too much for the first game

The legendary vs mythical distinction is based solely on the pokedex requirement and had no in universe meaning

I have to remind myself daily that Haxorus is not a psuedo & that Volcarona isn’t a legendary even tho they sure as hell made it seem like one.

I don't blame anyone who thought Rotom was a legendary Pokémon, especially when it had some traits that could fool someone into thinking it was one. It had a legendary battle theme play when you encountered it in Sinnoh, it had new forms introduced in Platinum alongside Shaymin and Giratina, and its national dex number was right in between the cross gen evolutions and the actual Sinnoh legends. The only thing that made it obvious to discount it was that it could breed.

I think we need a 3rd group here. Pokémon who are considered a legendary and/or mythical but can breed and/or evolve :)

i'm still not 100% on phione being a legendary or mythical. i feel it is in a similar group as carbink where it has ties to a mythical but isn't one itself.

for me the mystical Pokemon were the 100 base on every stat Pokemon from each Generation. Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Manaphy, Shaymin, Victini. Realy Cresselia a legendary, because you catch it ingame, while Darkrai is mystical because only optained via gift Event- come on they are a Duo, a legendare Duo

In Pokemon mystery dungeon Explorers of Sky, Rotom's special held item (every single species of pokemon had a unique held item in that game) uses the same flavor text that held items for the other legendaries use saying something along the lines that this "legendary" pokemon dwells deep in a dungeon, and it was only obtainable through a locked door near the end of a dungeon which otherwise only happens with legendary Pokemon's held items (the 2nd part I'm not 100% sure about as its been awhile since i last replayed the game)

I know what you said about the anime, but at one time they called Relicanth legendary. Which would be similar to calling Kabutops legendary. It's an old rock fish. That's about it.

Regarding Arcanine, why must Arcanine have been the original fire legendary over Moltres? Could simply have been another potential legendary alongside the 3 birds. It's majestic appearance and abnormally high stats lend credence to the idea.

Zoura has to be worse for regular Pokémon as in the first black and white games you had to have a Mythical to even encounter it
