me and my dad had 243 pokemons in the gold version more than 10 years ago! and now that i've seen this video... WOW dad! we had cables to trade and we had red, blue, yellow, gold and crystal versions. i will never forget him catching lugia, raiku, entei and lapras in front of me. even dunsparce which i had never seen THX DAD YOU WERE THE BEST! MISS YOU

The worst part is that once you catch all of them, your reward is a pixelated certificate of achievement. And then nothing happens. I finally completed a pokedex at 14. I got the certificate. I thought I would feel better. I was pissed. And that's when I stopped being a child. I became an adult that day.

Remember that 1st time u beat the Jhoto League and u were like, “wow, that was great. Now what?” And then u find out that there’s an entire other region for you to explore? That was some crazy shit and I still remember the moment

It is technically impossible to have all of the Johto starters when it's just silver and yellow or gold and blue because you can't trade a Johto starter to the Gen 1 games

Gen 3 will be ridiculous considering that you'd need: Fire Red, Leaf Green, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby, Colosseum, XD Gale of Darkness to finally get every Pokemon excluding Deoxys, Mew, Celebi and Jirachi. Even with breeding you'd still need to reset to get every starter.

Gen 3 is probably the worst to catch 'em all since there's a lot of Pokemon that you can't obtain in any of the Gen 3 games, especially regarding Gen 2. I think because of this, Game Freak stopped putting "Gotta catch 'em all" on the box arts of all Pokemon games when Gen 3 started.

I completed the pokedex in my Pokemon Blue (with my friend's Red) when I was 11 years old. Since gameboys weren't allowed in our school, we had to sneak around during recess with our link cables. It was such a blast, and literally the happiest day of my life when we finally finished.

As annoying as it is, you have to admit it's brilliant marketing by Nintendo/Game Freak.

personally, i just tried to make it easier on myself by trying to SEE every pokemon, not catch or own them. ...and even still you can never encounter celebi... fuckin' celebi...

"Gotta catch em all" was never a thing in Japan. It was just a marketing strategy Nintendo used for selling the games to the rest of the world.

The initial idea behind having two versions of each game with different exclusives was about making people interact with each other and actually have the games encourage developing relationships in order to get all of the Pokémon. Back in the mid-nineties I really don't think that it was as cynical a decision as you're making it out to be. I really like these videos overall thought and it's interesting seeing just how ridiculous that decision makes catching 'em all.

On a completely irrelevant note, something that annoyed me very much about FR/LG is that if a Gen 1 Pokémon needed to evolve via friendship into a Pokémon introduced in Gen 2, then the game would give you the "What? Your Pokémon is evolving!" message, and then it would abruptly end with a "???" Btw congrats on 10k subs

I actually just recently completed the task of catching all 801 pokemon(missing marshadow)without a single hack or cheating device. i used firered, emerald, ruby, diamond, pearl, soulsilver, white, white2, black2, x, y, sun, moon, yancy and curtis from black2, pokemon dream radar, a ds lite, and a 3ds. And am now currently shiny hunting Edit: i also used pokemon bank and my friends 3ds for one night

Basically: The lack of breeding in gen 1 is just plain stupid. The lack of stones in gold/silver is dumb.

12:52 you actually can't get that high with Gold and Blue because resetting becomes a huge issue. You can't backtrade your Gen 2 starter to Blue and you need a place to save it. Thus, you can only reset the Blue and not the Gold. I did it a couple years ago (all 251 only using glitches for Mew and Celebi, glitching Celebi is difficult as hell) and it took me Gold, Silver, Blue, and Red. I think you can do it with just Gold, Silver and Blue though.

A year ago I finished my Gen 1/2 catch'em all challenge. I took the whole year to try and get all the Pokemon save for Celebi. I used this to help me get them. And because I used emulators I was able to use Stadium 1 and 2 with the Transfer Pak mods to trade Pokemon around, so I played Blue to get the last fossil and few exclusives there, got Chikorita in Silver, traded it to Crystal, reset it for Tododile and caught the rest of the exclusives like the Mareep, Remoraid lines, and Giraffarig. It was very fun and I got Lugia as my last Pokemon with 4 hours to spare. Thanks for this guide, it was very helpful! Can't wait to use the Gen 3 guide to do it all over again.

12:48 The Resetting in that case doesn't work though, because you can't send the Generation 2 Pokemon to a Generation 1 game.

Chansey is actually in Cerulean cave as well. It’s really easy to catch there. Many people don’t know this and spend hours trying to catch one in the Safari Zone. This is postgame, though

You can't get the missing Johto starters by using one gen2 game + one gen1 game, since you'd lose your dex progression when you reset and you can't store them in gen1 without glitching

I don´t know if anyone has brought it up but your numbers for gen2 are false. if you combine one gen1 and one gen 2 game you actually can´t get the gen2 starters since they´re untradable with Gen 1 games. 13:09 as an example.

Actually, item trade Evos don't work with gen 1 unless you use Stadium 2.... AND you can't get all the Jotho starters with a gen 1 game partener as you can't trade them to the gen 1 game

honestly, i was glad these games were made that way. it made me talk to other kids when i was younger i made friends because of it. it was annoying yes but for me it made me break out of my shell and i can never thank the people of game freak enough for it.

Always thought it was dumb that their slogan was "gotta catchem all," yet you literally can't even with the first games to come out...like what the hell???

This is why I was so thankful for the 2nd gen games and Pokemon stadium 2. It made it so much easier to just complete your 1st gen games faster.

My Pokemon Experience: By the time gold, silver and crystal came out, i was well aware of the need to have multiple copies to "Catch them all" so i did get a gold and silver for xmas one year. I was maybe 13-14? I realized right away you had certain ones available on each and the stories were a slight bit different. Not a lot, but noticeable. I was playing them together, swapping back and forth, doing 1 city at a time. Gold was my favorite, but i knew i needed silver for the legendary bird, and to gather all dog's. since i had, had blue and yellow and my friend had a red and blue, together we were able to complete all our pokedex's with a lot of trading and time with his trade chord. We both had the gold and silver and were seeing who could complete them faster. He also got crystal a few years later and i did not. Afterwards we then would complete our dex's for ones we were missing. We found out pretty darn quick / by accident how to duplicate pokemon, so what we did very often was duplicate the pokemon we traded each-other and then trade back the original / keep the duplicate. There was always a risk of lose so we always tried to have a backup just in case. This was how we were able to get full line-ups of level 100 of the exact same pokemon, moves and all on our gameboy's,. Gold and Silver were the end of pokemon for me for a number of years. When RSE came out i was entering High-school give or take and i had long done away with my old purple clear gameboy color.... :(.. But.. Around the age of 16-17, i found a killer deal on a new gameboy sp lite and it had come with fire red and leafy green.** Remakes from my young child hood that started it all!** It also came with a complete kit with about 40 accessories for the SP like charging dock, link cables, cases, all sorts of more or less useless crap but the wires were what was handy because i could link it with another SP my little brother had used when he was little.. Anyway, it was $165 at wall-mart for everything after tax's, i was pretty stoked! I played it for weeks while i was on vacation in Ontario. Got back to BC at end of summer and about 3 months later a friend of mine was over and was playing it. before he left he had it in his pocket and forgot to take it out.. anyway, he "stole" everything... both games and pocket console... he claimed it was an accident and would return it, but never did....what a douche.. After that it wasn't till the age of 24 when i learned about emulators. That changed everything, and this year age 29, i found out how to modify those old roms as you can acquire digital copies in various ways across the web. There are Hack programs that work like an emulator to read the rom, but upon reading can now edit and write to them. This is so make your own versions from the base framework. Pretty cool! With those programs to hack, you are able to see how the game was originally built / put together, find their flaw's and even fix them if you so choose. Amazing what programmers have done in their free time just because they can.

This video perfectly summed up my childhood struggle. I ragequit at 126 in yellow when I found out Mew was a mythical. Young me did surprisingly good though, 126/130 on his own? I do have a nitpick. When trading from gen 1 to gen 2 the mon is assumed to have the necessary item to evolve. You don't need to give it an item, sent it back to gen 1 then forward again. My scyther from Yellow evolved straight into a scizor when I traded it to a friend with Gold. Never got that Scizor back in my Silver version though

Beauty about having 2 friends who lived less than a 2 minute walk from me We say which game we’d prefer from the 2 versions of each generation. If all 3 wanted the same (which never happened) we’d draw the version at random from a hat. And then we had the starters names in a hat and draw them at random to make it fair, and then trade back and forth, and trade again each time it evolves, and same thing with fossils, the eevee forms and the fighting Pokémon

Make a ROM Hack! Also, Celebi is the 251st Pokemon. So, after the Trainer Fly, trading the Mew to G/S/C, get all available Pokemon in G/S/C and R/B/Y. Trade them to one game, reset some times, go through the struggle of catching all Pokemon, reseting all but one game, etc. It's tedious, but entirely possible.

Can you breed the Johto starters in the Gen 2 games? I vaguely remember a players guide back in the day that may or may not have said that I could breed them

The cloning glitch makes wonders in gold and silver (not crystal tough). You clone your pokemon with it's held item, that's how I got like 20 of each stone ;)

I love that Pokemon Origins recognized how hard it is to catch Chancey in one scene, and on a side note, this video was a brilliant birthday gift to myself and Mew, even if I didn't see it until March 2018.

I think the pokemon stadium games was worth a mention. I remember farming the elite 4 in pokemon stadium for the obtainable pokemon and trading using pokemon stadium to get the evolutions requiring trading. I also preferred to play pokemon yellow through pokemon stadium as you got a bigger screen and could double the speed :p.

And that is why I _never_ feel bad about exploiting glitches like the trainer fly glitch. Besides, glitch pokemon are extremely interesting.

Just pointing out a mistake you made during the gen 2 portion. You counted Arcanine/Nintales twice, since one of them is already version exclusive, you don't need to count them again during the stone problem segment. So the total is actually 1 higher

This is why Pokémon stadium 1 gave you a random chance to get Eevee, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, the fossils and starters when you beat gym leader castle

you should do this for something like gen 5 and how you'd have to go about to catch All the pokemon

Imagine a game where all pokémon are catchable and pokémon that evolve with trades don't imo it would be way better since you're I can't even complete the pokedex so I guess I'll just beat the elite four and stop but if you can catch em all and complete professor oaks mission without multiple gameboys it would be way more fun

You forgot something really huge here. Pokémon Stadium. If you defeat the Elite 4 + Rival in the Gym Leader castle, the game randomly rewards you one of the following Pokémon you can transfer into any Gen 1 game pack: Bulbasaur Squirtle Charmander Eevee Hitmonchan Hitmonlee Kabuto Omanyte That's right. ALL of the choice Pokémon. That means the only ones you cannot collect are the version exclusives with one pack. But if you get Stadium to a point where you can challenge and beat them, not ONLY can you collect all 150 Pokémon without having to restart one of the game packs, you can actually collect all 150 Pokémon on BOTH carts, meaning that two people working together can walk away happy with fully solved games and nobody having to lose all of their hard work.

Also I always reset to have all the starters at the beginning that was only like 20 minutes of gameplay to get all 3 at the start your game with... resetting the game never bothered me playing till the 5th badge to get all the eevee you needed was basically a speed run... what you need to do is beat both games then trade over all of the tradable Pokémon that evolve from trading, catch and trade over all of the version exclusive Pokémon your second set of legendary birds your second mewtwo and then you restart your game twice for the starters then on the third reset speed run for your final eevee and boom all 150 original Pokémon... there is a method to getting them that is way less complicated then you explained here and if you're willing to put in the effort then you're golden

Easiest way to conplete the dex is get a copy of ORAS an get a copy of X/Y GG After 400+ hours i Got a full National dex, a full living dex and nearly 2 boxes of shinies. I Guess they had to make it easier 'cause 721 is a biiiiit more than 151 xD

Just found your channel with the Magikarp video. This is the second video of yours I'm watching. So far it's been good, but not great. Then I hit 7:30, and you've just earned yourself another diehard fan!

It seems like the "optimal" way would be using Red Blue AND Yellow (to not have to reset for 3rd starter/3rd eeveelution) to complete the Kanto dex. Using Gold Silver and Crystal to complete the Johto dex as much as possible, then using the file with your complete Kanto dex to trade in all the Gen 1 pokes that evolved with stones, Kanto starters (breed to get the small starters obviously), etc. Definitely would love to see a video of this touching on Gen 3!

I am kinda dissapointed you didn't mention Japanese Blue, since it has different distribution - for example, you can get Golem in Japanese Blue with in-game trade.

I can say, as someone who's caught 'em all in Blue with the help of my sister's Red, (On 3DS VC), that I had always wanted to see a video like this. And you did it perfectly.

tfw you made me realize I need to play through both gen 1 games on the 3DS and invest in Pokémon Bank. Also, since I haven't seen it commented elsewhere, stones are available from certain NPCs you trade phone numbers with in gen 2.

It's that phrase you've all heard before! "Gotta catch em all!" For me it was more like "hey bitch fight me no legendaries 3v3

why else would you want to trade? getting a link cable was one of the biggest highlights ever. it was so much fun fighting and trading with everyone i knew, getting pokemon from different color cartridges which i could not collect otherwise. that was the whole point.

So i was expecting something completly different by the title but i liked it a lot. hope that we get that for some later pokemon games as well

In gen 1 it's possible to get a Machamp! There is a person who is willing to trade a pokemon for machoke. When you do it the machoke actually evolves into Machamp which brings the number for generation 1 Up to 125

I caught 'em all in both Blue and Silver way back when, including Mew and Celebi. I remember browsing the magazines whilst out shopping with my mom and I saw a Nintendo magazine advertising a list of dates for when and where you could go to download Mew. The magazine was in a plastic wrapper so you couldn't see the dates without buying it and I begged my mom to buy it so we could see them! She did and there was a shopping centre fairly near us that the tour was passing through and the magazine warned that the lines could be long so it was worth turning up early. On the day, we left with plenty of time to spare... and there was no one else there. They had set up a huge area for people to line up but it was so unnecessary, we were in and out in 5 minutes. Got myself a Mew, could not have been happier! Very similar thing with Celebi except it was at a Toys R Us rather than a random shopping centre and they gave out physical certificates of authenticity (which I still have) along with the downloads. Sadly both of the mythical boys got lost to the sands of time when the battery died on Silver and my save file got deleted...

The GTS is quiet good! There are little children wanting a legendary for a bad Pkm just cauz it isnt in this game and there are many hacked Legis but if you make fair treats youll get what you want. That means that you should trade UB for UB and your 2nd Lunala for Solgaleo. Examples from other Gens? Same strategy! trade Phanpy for teddiursa or skrelp for clauncher... Thats kinda easy and it works! But for sure youll need more than one Game. Or much luck in Wonder Trade XD With this strategy you get your searched Pkm in 1-6 Hours and not have to wait for days and you get a Hacked shiny but shiny locked Legi lvl 100 with Pokerus cauz youve got a pidgey. I mean sounds good but you cant use it in CP and it isnt yours and hacked...

Congratulations on your subscriber count. I'd love to see a continuation of this topic. I got close to getting them all on my original Red version with the help of my brother and friends but I never got 150. Closest I got to collecting them all was through the card game.

My goal was never to catch 'em all, some pokémon were just plain pointless, like Farfetch'd, just about every baby pokémon, every Pikachu clone after Gen. 2, Unown, Spinda, several feline pokémon and Furfrou.

time machine rules: you can't trade Pokemon back in time holding an item, so held item trade evolutions between blue and gold wouldn't work

Gen 7, you need to have Moon or Ultra Moon if you want Panguru, which can make it's partner use a move twice.

I know with Gen 8 the National dex is technically impossible but I’d love to see this series return. I know it’s likely never gonna happen but it would be super cool to see a return that or the USUM catch ‘em all quest
