Ranked 6th in my Top 10 Worst Pokemon for this challenge is is possible that Pikachu actually may be one of the best? Was Ash right all along? New Intro Music by Xander Morrison - / xandermorrisonmusic
Don’t listen to people who tell you that speeding up the game is cheating. There’s absolutely no advantage that you gain over NPCs or other players by speeding up the pace. Don’t let legalists bully you into wasting your own time. Keep up the hard work, jrose. I’m loving these videos.
hwoarangthedoorbell Idk, is argue that the game is balanced around the fact that you wouldn’t spend an hour leveling up. Say in a normal area leveling you’d spend 20 mins. With triple the battle speed, you’d probably still spend the 20 mins, but now you’re way higher level. I’m not calling it cheating, just saying it does make the game easier if you abuse it
@@justinnesbit3948 I cant speak for speedruns. But I have seen some people literally leveling up a magicarp for half a day in the normal gamespeed. They beat the game with the sole magicarp. So speeding up the game cant have much of an advantage rather than saving up this guy's time. I am for speeding up the game because in this particular series he will save a massive amount of time trying out different pokemons as starters.
@YamiJustin don’t forget that’s he’s trying to stay at as low a level as possible. So he won’t be spending the same amount of time leveling faster, he’s be spending less time getting to the level he would have gotten to anyways at normal speed.
There's probably like one person who sees that isn't a legit cartridge and goes "FGSKRHTNDKRRNFQWNRN!?!?", but chances are they don't even watch this channel anyways.
@boom Here's the thing my guy; I own all the games I play on emulator. I've played those cartridges hundreds of times. So why do I still use emulators? Randomizers; the games don't have enough replayability as-is because I'm always stuck with the same Pokemon. So I use emulators to make the game more fun for me, but I legitimately own the game, so I'm not robbing Game Freak of any money- they already got my money years ago for the exact same games. Forcing people to only ever use the actual cartridge, even if they own the games they're using ROMS for, is ridiculous. I'm trying to experience the game in new and fun ways that aren't possible on an actual cartridge. If you and your elitist standards want to complain about how horrible of a person I am, cool cool, but I see no issue with it and you picking fights with everyone in the comments is extremely annoying.
@@yawninglion1677 I don't mind that people use emulators, but IF you want to play on genuine (ish) hardware with randomizer, you could get a flash cart and put those randomized roms on there. I've done it quite a bit for solo runs to get the right starter, playing on an actual Gameboy Advance SP, and I have to say it's alot of fun. Again, nothing wrong with emulators, just a tip in case you didn't know.
@@gaberboo7434 Covered in detail in every single video, yet some people still don't understand 😂😂😂. If he didn't get it when jrose explained it, I don't think he's going to get it when you explain it either.
I know right lol. The other runs i guess i can kinda understand the complaints, but expecting Jrose to complete 53 individual runs of Red/Blue at base speed? Please.
People are only saying that because it's an emulator. I guarantee you if he did that with the GB Tower in Stadium, they would be perfectly fine with it.
I don't have any issue with him speeding the game up, but this logic is upside down. The fact that he cultivated his audience with content that has no speedups means that it is highly likely for people to have an issue with using speedups.
@Richard Davis No it is not cheating unless you are speedrunning, outside of speedrunning it is just moding but not cheating, as in you don't get advantages only quality of life.
I am not angry at all. I am sad that my hero is getting tired. He has every right to speed up the game. I just would point out it would be PARTICULARLY FUCKING AWESOME if he NEVER sped up. He can take a break. I'm just going to be sad he chose to stop being insane. Crazy Guy was a straight G.
Speeding up the game isn't cheating. It literally just makes things go faster; it doesn't actually make the game itself any easier. You're fine. Don't let anyone bully you into wasting more time than necessary.
@@petercarioscia9189 why would you waste your life grinding for 4 hours when you could do the same grind in an hour? The answer is because you don't value your own time
@MillennialHonkey 89 no I 'literally' didn't prove anything he said. Spending more time doing the same exact task =/= it is any easier or harder. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THR AGE YOU ARE AT THE END OF IT. If it were harder to play the game slower, then why has no one done a 0.1x playthrough of the game for a challenge? Now unlike your own comment and try and actually articulate yourself rather than just spouting nonsense.
Speed up as much as you want! Although I personally don't use it anymore, I honestly wouldn't mind bringing it back. I always thought that the argument that it's cheating to use it is silly. I could see an argument saying that it takes away from the experience to some level, but it doesn't change the experience for the viewers and the video is for them, not the player
I like seeing all the other poketubers commenting on each other's videos, giving each other advice and such. Makes it feel more like a community. Love your stuff MDB
@@streetsurfer420 Because a non-event Magikarp literally learns nothing outside of Splash and Tackle in gen 1; Jrose literally brings that up when describing the damn fish.
@@stephenthethiccboi9775 Rock and Steel don't resist Electric. Electric actually resists Steel, and it's only resisted by itself, Dragon and Grass (and Ground is immune).
I think he does major battles multiple times to see that it's consistent. I don't know if he uses save states in between elite four members to formulate a strategy and do that proving faster, but that would also mean that losing to Lance doesn't mean he fought all the others again.
@@wombat4191 He has said in his other videos in the series that he does not save in between members of the elite four, so he has to beat all five battles in a row to complete it.
"I never use Sky Attack on flying Pokémon. Like, who would use a two-turn attack?" Every single bird with Fly: Is that like a personal attack or something?
I never. NEVER understood the complaints of speeding up gameplay in real time. The only thing you save doing that is time which can be spent making more videos and editing. And no sane person would denounce a run for using speed up when all of them demand so much grinding, too.
Only time I could understand the complaint would be in legitimate speedruns. Never understood the complaint for challenge runs like this though that is based off the in-game time.
@boom Investing time to raise your Pokémon is not challenge. If difficulty was ever a concern in these games, the developers should have focused on better AI and more fleshed out movesets for later game trainers. A level 100 Pokémon is a level 100 Pokémon no matter how you get there, and if you need a higher level to be able to win, the bottom line is just that. Finding the level you need to be at to be able to win. Why not complain about something that actually does ruin difficulty like using in battle items or evasion like Double Team? The idea of denying being hit by your opponent is much more grimy than denying tedium of gaining experience unless it's a speedrun.
@boom I mean, did you watch the video though? He didn't level to 100. Besides, the entite point of these 'Challenge Runs' isn't to toil away half your life grinding a Pokémon game. It's to just see if it's possible to beat the given game with only one Pokémon and some other rules. I don't think it's fair to ask a content creator like this to do the game without speedups, when it makes absolutely no difference besided the amount of time he spent grinding, which is already the most braindead part of the game.
@boom Nah I disagree about that level 100 thing. Sure he could level all his pokemon to 100 but more than "a challenge" he's also trying to find out what's absolutely necessary to beat the game. That's a key part of these challenge runs that he mentions in his videos. Almost ANY pokemon can beat the game at level 100, he knows this, but these runs aren't a matter of "if" he cant beat the game with said pokemon, but who is it easiest with. If you watch his last video he does exactly this by comparing the levels of each starter in their respective runs. He says bulbasaur is the easiest because it was only level 69 when he beat Blue, while the other two starters needed 70+. Your argument isn't relevant here, in this context, speeding up the game is totally in the cards. This is more of a data collecting thing than a "challenge" anyway.
That other kid that cheats : *ARCE(ASS) IS DE BAST POKAMAN WITH HYDRO CANNON EARTHQUAKE JUDGEMENT AND SHADOW CLAW* Me an intellectual : *what's this moveset*
Using speed up isn't a problem as it's an official feature "technically" as Pokemon Stadiums 1 and 2 offer the feature to GameBoy games if you unlock it. So no complaints.
In my 20 years of playing Pokemon, I have never once used mimic, even by accident and it's like your ace in the hole, your clutch secret weapon....man, truly you are the Pokemon Master
Mimic is pretty much only immensely helpful in gen 1 solo runs. Otherwise, you either have another pokémon cover for your current one, or the move works differently.
I'd say Bulbasaur still keeps the top spot. This is mostly a tie. But Bulbasaur was your first run and you were still getting used to a lot of these obscure mechanics. So Bulbasaur would win the tie, in my mind. Plus it took slightly less time. Also seems like there was a lot more luck in this run. But that's hard to account for.
You have to consider that the crits happen more often because of Pikachu's higher speed stat so while there is luck involved just by being faster the likelihood of a critical hit goes up. It's a debate
I imagine it would be even easier in Yellow, as you can connect to a N64 with Stadium and give Pikachu Surf, which essentially destroys anything rock or ground.
Not really. Even though it gets a better move, Giovanni gets a massive upgrade in his team. Not only do all of his standard pokemon have EQ, but he also has a Persian with Slash.
@@randumo24Igor is saying that you can transfer Pikachu to Stadium64, learn Surf, then transfer him back to GameBoy Yellow, and fight regular Brock and Giovanni.
This video right here is why I think you are one of the best challenge runners out there. As oppose to Mah Dried Bread who just grinds and uses Double Team to solve all his problems, you actually strategize and find creative ways around your roadblocks. Good luck for Weedle.
@@exantiuse497 Doesn't matter really, I'm deliberately nitpicky here :p Honestly though, I just thought it was a funny moment^^ I seriously enjoy these videos.
@@exantiuse497 I've had times where the exact same play went ever so slightly differently. It's not always predictable how much damage you'll exactly get
Really loving these uploads, hope there is enough sustained engagement to keep them coming. And definitely utilize speed-ups with the Retron. I can't stand when the comments section acts like grinding your life away at 1x speed for no reason is a badge of honor.
I've never commented before but I just wanted to say thank you for making these challenge runs. I find your style the most enjoyable out of any of the Poketubers I've seen, and they've been keeping me entertained on my closing shifts given everything that's been going on in the world. I appreciate all the effort you go to to make these possible.
This format could potentially be a endless source of content. If you feel like continuing this series after you do all of gen 1, you could do gen 2, but only used potential starters that are exclusive to gen 2. Same with gen 3 and so on.
I'm not sure that Baby Pokémon in Gen 3 are good enough for the game ^^'' Wobbuffet can't finish Pokémon Emerald without objects, Wynaut is way worse than him.
I don't know if the format will work beyond Gen 1. Several things about this Gen specifically make these challenges far more possible and interesting. Stuff like fighting gym leaders wildly out of order, the awful enemy movesets, the abundance of strong TMs early on, the terrible AI, and the badge boost glitch all contribute to making these runs reasonably possible before level 100.
I hadn’t even noticed the different colour palettes in each playthrough, but now I’m almost as excited to see those as I am to see which Pokémon is next! Such a cool idea!
Yep. Body Slam in Gen 1 was pretty good in general. Lots of Mons get it. Plus, the 30% Paralysis is really good. The only downside is that Body Slam in Gen 1 cannot "Paralyze" Normal types.
Yeah, it's funny how 95% of the moves are complete garbage and then you have thunderbolt, surf, ice beam, flamethrower, fire blast, thunder, blizzard, hyper beam, earthquake, psychic, dig and bodyslam. Compare Bodyslam (85 power, 100 accuracy, 30% paralysis) to submission (80 power, 80 accuracy, does recoil to yourself)
Sick update to the thumbnails! I miss the old ones tbh but these are objectively superior designs and much more readable at a small size - very important - this coming from a thumbnail artist!
Your Pokemon challenges have proven to be my favorite of all the RU-vidrs I've seen so far. Thanks for the hard work, informative commentary, and entertaining product.
You should give Magikarp another try, NOW HEAR ME OUT. There's a legal event Magikarp that can learn Dragon Rage. It's legal in competitive battling, so why not give it a shot?
@@SuperTtKiller University Magikarp from '99 I believe. It was a Japanese event and the reward was a Magikarp with Dragon Rage. It could be added in via cheating device (which is already used to manipulate the starter, so no harm there) and then would be able to do damage in the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town. Worst case scenario, we get more Magikarp content. I say we push the issue and try to get a video out of it. It's a legit option that could realistically make it through the whole game.
@@counterfeit1148 I mean, Magikarp wouldn't really have a chance otherwise, considering it learns Tackle at level 15, it just *might* have a chance at beating Brock.
You were the first person I saw that made these type of videos. I'm so glad that you're grinding through all these challenges and upfront about all your processes. I wish i could count as more than one subscriber to help you on your way to 200k. You're gonna make it!
I'm absolutely hooked on this series. I think the tier list could use a "consistency" column. Not necessarily a statistic, but just a way to fill in the gap left by what's there alone. Speed is super important in Gen 1, and that seems to be the main takeaway here. Movepool also helped, Seismic Toss is an option the other electrics will loathe not having, but it was huge that you could just attack before being attacked against most foes. I wanna see how tough it is for Paras.
I was just wondering when this would come out. Also, I remember your Yellow least battle video. I can't imagine this going well. Edit: I stand corrected.
@@CharlieZColt Does it have some max IV's or something? Because otherwise it just has a bit better movepool, notably Thunderbolt at 26, but that you would get around the same level from Surge anyways.
Wombat not sure about IV’s but it gets Slam instead of Swift (I prefer slam because more damage) and Double Team which is a very broken movie if you can set up with it, basically you can spam double team so you just won’t get hit at all. Also the fights against Brock and Erika are easier.
@@CharlieZColt Oh yeah so you only referred to the movepool. Slam is honestly trash since you get Mega Punch in Mt Moon (and more of them in Celadon store), which has the same power and is more accurate, and later Body Slam, which is better than both of those in every way. And if you calculate average power (power*accuracy), Swift has the exact same as Slam. Double Team is also a TM that you can get from Celadon store, though in Yellow Pikachu learns it way before you get there, so that could be counted as an advantage. It also learns Quick attack at 11 instead of 16, which actually could be beneficial for this run. Some fights indeed are easier and there are fewer rocket fights, that is the main reason why running in Yellow would be unfair.
Hey Jrose! I love these videos and really admire your dedication to keeping things as genuine as possible. Hopefully people in the comments stop giving you so much flak! If they want the totally pure and genuine experience they can do the challenge on OG hardware themselves. Video production takes work and it's always a treat to see you post a new vid.
Unfortunately stab moves are gonna be trash because Ghost type is physical in gen 1 and Gastly doesn't learn any boosting moves other than double team so no badge boost. I expect Gastly to be a difficult
Although, Alakazam is gonna be a common theme in the last half of the game. So, there's that to worry about. Not to mention its crazy high Speed stat/Crit Ratio.
Gastly is the easiest mon to beat the Game with. It's base stats are so absurdly high when combined with badge boosts and stat exp that even without a boosting or Stab move it tears through everything with ease. The only threats in the entire game are getting hit by hypnosis from Agatha or getting crit by Alakazam psychic. You also roll through the entire early game effortlessly since nothing can hit you.
@@kassadus2499 to use badge boost you have to use a boosting move and the only boosting move you have access to in gen one is double team which jrose doesn't like using because it's too cheesy so that really leaves badge boost out of the picture
Love that conquest music as usual! Here’s a question, would you ever consider reviewing the game? Or trying a challenge in that game? Maybe try beating it with just eevee and jigglypuff?
When I was young i did this with Pikachu only. My moveset was Thunderbolt, Double Team, Mimic and Thunder. At Bruno I used Mimic to Mimic Earthquake and then steamroll him. Same for Gary his Rhydon.
I can't get enough of these videos, so speed up the game as much as you want as long as the game play remains the same. Thanks for giving me something to look forward to while quarantined, Jrose.
I love this series! Really happy that you produce content like this! It's so entertaining and thanks also for making these videos lengthy!! I wouldn't mind if they are 1 hour per episode even. I love watching them. Thanks for the great work you do!!
Bide also has priority (he says it doesn't in gen 1, but I don't think that is correct), so being faster than Onix is needed for quick attack to avoid hitting him during bide.
Oak: “so you want the water Pokémon SQUIRTLE?” Ash: “yes.” Ash received a PIKACHU. Oak looks on in horror as everything he knows is a lie. His grandson died in a bike accident crash 5 years ago. Ash never woke up on time to get his Pokémon. The professor stirs out of sleep to see that he’s drunk again, his wife yells at him for the third time this week. Man that got darker than I intended.
So interesting going back to your old videos after seeing your newer videos. How similar they are, and some of the newer jokes referring to old videos. Or how much more explanation goes into these older ones. I absolutely love your content and will drop everything when you upload. Good luck on future runs and don't forget Sabrina.
Jose man keep it up, I know these videos take super long and take a lot of patience but we appreciate them and look forward to them during quarantine. Thank you and plz keep them coming!
Seeing how much just getting three badge boosts with Agility helped out Pikachu, yeah I'm sure now Withdraw would have helped Squirtle more than having both Body Slam and Dig did. Getting all your stats nearly doubled > a bit more move coverage.
Tentacool is gonna have a problem with Kadabra/Alakazam, and its physical movepool outside of Wrap is ass (no Body Slam and best physical move it gets is Double Edge). Getting three Swords Dance in and getting three badge boosts in the process could allow it to get past them reliably with Wrap without being too overlevelled though, and it will definitely fuck the rest of the game up.
@@OmegaTyrant For champion's Alakazam you can just set up on pidgeot. Sabrina would be hard though. Also dratini with wrap + agility, almost no weaknesses and nearly every tm will be pretty busted. EDIT: Nice Cacodemon.
@@androsp9105 Without Barrier though the PIdgeot would do serious damage to it with Sky Attack when Tentacool has very low HP and Defense, and having both Barrier + Swords Dance would mean giving up one of Surf, Ice Beam/Blizzard, and Wrap, all really helpful moves, while Barrier being a level up move means it can't be saved until the Champion battle. Then if it uses Mirror Move on the Swords Dance that could be a run ender if that wasn't your last boost. It might be quite luck-based to set up enough on the Pidgeot to get through the rest of the team at an especially low level.
@@theSato Well, I enjoy responding to people who resonate with my work to give myself a sense of personality and community. Also having my music here is a big win for me so I'm enjoying the moment.

Dude I haven't played Pokemon in 10 years and I only played gen 4, as a kid that knew nothing about the game, and ur content is still great, idk what it is but it's good to watch
Don't apologize for speeding the game. I for one, can't even play regular pokemon because its so godawful slow. So speed it up and do yourself a favor :D
Jrose11 keep doing your thing. Bringing solid content and new strategies every time. My brother you are keeping the nostalgia alive for a generation of people.
This was really enjoyable! Just started watching recently, and I've got to say, I absolutely respect you wanting to play on legitimate hardware. I'm the exact same way. If it can be done one a real game, I absolutely will! Keep up the good work!
That’s fossil fossil rivalry end comment in the video seems interesting. Always nice to watch your content. So relaxing and a break from classes and assignments. Need to get my popcorn and soda stash for these 😂
Probably one of my most embarrassing stories but here we go, so when I was eight Pokémon yellow had come out. I was so excited I reached lavender town with a inventory of Pokémon and I had no idea you could deposit Pokémon or where Pokémon I had caught were going. Also Typing didn’t mean a thing to me so I spent days trying to beat brock with pikachu.. you know though, that beating made it a challenge in my mind and it really was.. and when I beat him it gave me the motivation to see that journey through like all great games do. I miss the old games, no hand holding even for kids games, figure it out on your own. Wasn’t that the magic?
At the end of the series (and assuming you decide to do this with all generations with the new Pokémon respectively) you should take the top 6 Pokémon you think you had the easiest time with and the 6 Pokémon you had the hardest time with and do a separate video for them as 1 party.
Funny story, back when our channel was looking at ideas for speedrun races one of the first ideas we had was catching a Pikachu in Viridian Forest in R/B, then beating Brock with only that Pikachu to finish the challenge, even had overlays and special rule boxes done already. Even just in finding a Pikachu we were in way over our heads, and then when we realized we were about to spend hours upon hours getting rocked by Brock it had to be scrapped. Its super impressive to see someone take these sorts of runs on, especially with the speed at which you're knocking these out, and is really cool to see how you have to change plans around your limitations. These videos honestly help give me a new perspective on some pokemon like Geodude for example I would never even really think about before. Really looking forward to seeing more stuff from you.
Dude I love your commentary and the way you talk. Can really connect with all the things that are going in your head while you are playing. I actually enjoy hearing you commentate as I go to sleep at night :P
I think it was fairly obvious PIkachu wouldn't be that bad. All that really matters in solo pokemon runs is having a good speed and atk or special. You need to go first and hopefully kill your enemies in one hit, Pikachu was built for that. Also has a fairly diverse move set due to being the mascot of the series.
I'm pretty excited for Exeggcute. It'll be hard as fk since it has a shit level up moveset, but once you get psychic and mega drain it'll be somewhat easier. Has decent defense and OK special. I did a run with Exeggcute recently but with some other hacks to the game, including randomized TMs (any TM obtained is random), and any Pokemon can learn any TM. Brock was annoying AF.
I can't wait to hear your opinion on Pokemon you get later in the game like Tangela or Doduo. I found out the hard way that they are no fun early game.
I actually thought this would be Weedle and was looking forward to the trouble you would have and if you would pull through. Oh well, I suppose we'll have to wait!!
