In this video, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets and Easter eggs surrounding Pokemon and their real-world prehistoric origins, such as how Tyrantrum was based on dinosaurs like T.rex. And how Pokemon influenced real world biology, such as how Bulbasaur informed the name of the ancient prehistoric animal Bulbasaurus.

@MultiTarded it had the "peak in popularity" at the time because it was a brand new thing. It was a game everyone played, with cards everyone collected AND an anime everyone watched. It wasn't because the games were this technological marvel or something. Also, jesus fucking christ, get those nostalgia goggles off. They didn't get worse or better, they just made new ones and designs like "Rock with arms" was done already. Started gen 1 aswell, but people highly, HIGHLY give gen 1 too much credit and make it seem like it was this masterpiece of a game, while the games always were mediocre, we just didn't know better.
@ShyBoy6ty9
@ShyBoy6ty9 4 года назад
Tbh, while I'm not so vocal about it, I haven't been too impressed with a lot of designs after gen 4. This just made me respect GF so much more. EDIT: Just read the replies. For what it's worth, I think the art style is different now. They're not done by the same artist(s). Even the old Pokemon just don't have the same look about them as they did in the first two gens. Call it nostalgia, but I have a soft spot for the hand drawn look.

@@Setosama02 And I still think it's just meant to be a mashup of a bunch of different kaiju. Its Japanese name doesn't reference either one instead being one letter away from Anguirus, another kaiju created by the same people. It has a hard shell like Gamera, a Tyrannosaur-esque appearance like Godzilla and Bemular, Spikes like Bemular and Anguirus, younger form like a Godzilla, and finally a pupal stage like Mothra. It's not just inspired by one kaiju, it's inspired by kaiju as a concept. That's why it has a rivalry with Duraludon. It's based on Mecha-Godzilla and The Shard, a skyscraper in London ( I don't really buy the robotic Bemular inspiration. Why would it have a rivalry with itself?). Kaiju are commonly depicted destroying skyscraper and wrecking cities since it fits with the theme of humans vs nature portrayed by films of the genre.

The gen 8 fossil Pokemon seem based generally on palaeontological chimaeras more so than forgeries specifically, as well perhaps as on other kinds of erroneous reconstructions like Cope's Elasmosaurus, which you indeed mentioned in the video, that were certainly not forgeries.

2:09 Actually, Aerodactyl in Japanese is pronounced “Putera” (プテラ) and not “Tera”. It’s named after the pteranodon, which is similarly pronounce “puteranodon” (プテラノドン). Despite the “P” being silent in English, for whatever reason it wasn’t when it got imported into Japanese. I assume the Japanese person that first read “pteranodon” had no idea it was supposed to be silent and thus it was spread to the masses being pronounced that way.

Localization has thrown off a lot of understandings. Don't feel bad. In the manga, Pokemon Adventures, they even swapped two character's names just to be in line with the localized games' names, the effect of which has resulted in them swapped in basically all non-Japanese media. Those characters are Green, the male main character rivaling Red, and Blue, the female main character. This was despite all three of them wore outfits that match their names: Red, Green, Blue. Imagine how much confusion someone like me, who focuses on the Japanese originals, sometimes gets when I have to mentally swap them?

It's worth noting that while Mamoswine draws design inspiration from wooly mammoths, it's more of an oversized boar.

Could you imagine the elitist scientists and paleontologists that are like “There goes another dumb name that some nerd came up with” when one of these Pokémon fans finds an undiscovered fossil?
@LonesomeDevil
@LonesomeDevil 4 года назад
Perhaps. However, I don't think they should be bitter towards Pokémon considering it very likely inspired tons of kids to study animal and marine biology, as well as paleontology itself.

I like how Snivy's evo line is based on how snakes evolved over time. RRather than being a modern snake, Snivy is based on ancient snakes, back when they still had limbs. As it evolves, its limbs become underdevelopped as Servine, and Serperior completely loses its legs while having only two very small leaf "hands"

Thanks for clearing up my confusion about the Galar fossil pokemons' design. It bothered me that they looked so odd and I questioned how these prehistoric pokemon could thrive back then.

Love the video, would have liked that you would have mentioned metric measurements next to the imperial though. Europe has internet and running water too.

@2:00 The Kaiju "Meganula" first appeared in the 1956 film Rodan! Godzilla vs Megaguirus is the 2nd Toho film where they appear and pool their energy from Godzilla into the queen "Megaguirus". Also, please tell me where your hard evidence is that Tyrannitar was modeled after Godzilla when Feraligatr's cry is LITERALLY an 8-bit Godzilla roar?

That’s an interesting point about Hawaii’s lack of a fossil record, but they could’ve had fossils in Alola anyway. Fossils can be found underwater, too. They’d probably have to be based on animals from the distant past, though (for the plate containing the fossils to have drifted over the hotspot that formed the islands), less Tyrunt and more Kabuto.
