I love that idea. One of the reasons I loved the original Dark Souls is that very little was told to you and almost every bit of lore is to be discovered by reading item descriptions and gleaming what ever you can from npc dialog. Even then you had to come up with your own assumptions and deductions as to what is going on. Would be real cool if pokemon pushed on that aspect a little more, and focus on the discovery and research of different pokemon.

The Chinese myth in which the Magikarp line is based on tells the story of a carp which swam up the waterfall to the dragon den and the gods blessed it to become a dragon but after it abused its new power the gods took away their blessing leaving it as a ferocious sea monster. So basically a water carp becoming a water dragon and then losing the dragon typing becoming evil hence the dark type in the mega. The only reason Gayrados isn’t dragon is balancing issues since water dragon in gen 1 only had 1 weakness (dragon) and the only dragon attack in gen 1 was dragon rage which meant you couldn’t deal a super effective dragon attack

The American Ostrich, called by Guarani natives "Ñandú Guazú"(literally: "Giant Spider" because they said they looked like giant spider when the Ñandu were resting on the floor with most of their legs and necks hidden inside their feathers). The Guarani natives had many sacred animals, with the Spider being very important and their " inkling" the Ñandu being very important too, not as much as a proper god but they did have a myth of being a future saviour that would unite all tribes sent by the great spirit of the "Grandfather" Ñandu (it's pronounced "Nyan-do" btw). There's also a myth of the Ñandú being related to the Southern cross constellation. So there's the real life link of Dugtrio to Southern American natives.

One year later, and there's a small detail I'd like to mention: the anime actually indirectly references Butterfree's entry from this book. This book claims that Metapod takes one week, give or take a few extra days, before it completes its metamorphosis into Butterfree. In the anime, the PokéDex states that Ash's Butterfree reached its final form faster than any other specimen on record, and Ash and Misty complain that they were lost in Viridian Forest for a week. So Ash's Butterfree fully evolved in a mere fraction of the time! Let THAT sink in. Also, sidebar, this PokéDex really puts your adventure into perspective. Sticking with Butterfree taking a little over a week to evolve, if we think of our adventures as the average representation of a Pokémon journey, either we're catching special Caterpie that evolve super quickly, we're on the same level of talent as Ash for quickly raising Caterpie to Butterfree, or our character is really wandering Viridian Forest for roughly a week as we try to raise that Caterpie into Butterfree before battling Brock.

Not only is this lore very cool, but I was able to find my copy of this book shortly after the first video was posted. So I decided to follow along with this video and the book, it was very fun!

I still love Pokemon, but I forgot how much the documenting Pokemon as if they were wild animals helped with this. Listening to these brings back memories of the Wildlife Fact Files I used to collect as a kid.

Twin Needle vs 1,000 Punches a Second sound like unstoppable force vs immovable object. Some of the descriptions are hilarious to overthink about.

Considering how many characteristics Venomoth shares with Metapod and Caterpie, the fact that Venonat and Butterfree look identical, and the fact that this book and it's lore completely seperate Venomoth and Venonat, I'm pretty convinced that Butterfree and Venomoth swapped evolutionary lines early in development.

Saw Pikachu strapped to the voltage device and thought- "Ahh, it's just a band around its belly, it can wriggle out at any time, no worries." Then looked at its hands and ears...

3:55 fun fact: touchukaso is the Japanese word for the cordyceps fungus iirc, the same fungus that inspired the last of us. Makes a lot of sense, considering it says that the mushroom controls the bug in many dex entries.

That Venomoth/Venonat split is just another piece of evidence that they had nothing to do with each other until late development.

Or a semi random pattern like Spinda. Probably not possible in the early games, but it'd be a really neat addition to the new ones

It's such a shame they seem so reluctant to retcon anything so they can't add new stuff to old monsters like that without it being some ridiculous hoopjumping that explains it only being in this gen..

@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 well the stat changes they seem okay with, they'll even retcon their types. but evolutions or forms and stuff, the only time they were ever okay was adding sex differences.. everything else if they add something new like oh you could breed it from an egg before but now it has a new baby form? they have to put in some held-item crap to justify it, as if we can't handle this is just the new baby form that should have always been around. even weirder they care so much given that they seem to have zero concern for fans in double digit ages.

The saddest part about the tochukaso being that in demand that it's killed for... is most of its purported medicinal properties have never even been evidenced to exist.

So, Arbok and Raticate were rivals? You said this wasn't brought up again, but the anime propably did a reference to that by giving these Pokémon to Jessie and Cassidy respectively, with how many references to this book there are in the anime, you can't tell me this wasn't on purpose.
