I love how in the US this is "Pokey Means Business!" Almosy like he just wants to beat you up so you'll leave him alone, meanwhile... In Japan... "CEASE TO EXIST" is the title. His actual intentions for you.
Porky Means Business is just a fan-name given to the song. Sort of like how Humoresque of a Little Dog is given the fan-name Buy Something, Will Ya? (which is a Zelda reference) online. The English name given to this song in the OST is "The Battle of Final Destiny."
Perfect theme for Pokey as his entire arc is going from a simple neighbor kid to a genocidal mutant abomination. The duality of the track really emphasizes that.
@@IAm-zo1bo Porky gets in his “totally safe capsule” after you fight him in Mother 3 but the thing is he can’t get out of the capsule. And since he’s immortal due to a bunch of time traveling, he’s gonna be stuck in there. *FOREVER*
Epic fact: in my first blind time fighting this boss somehow inadvertently I managed to perfectly synchronize Porky's first attack just when the beatdrop started, THAT WAS VERY INTIMIDATING AND EPIC AT THE SAME TIME!!! I will never forget that when hearing this track!
Same but mine was synchronized with Giygas reflecting Paula's PSI attack (since I didn't know he had a PSI shield) and dealing mortal damage to Paula. At first I thought "Wow, unique music for if a party member dies," but after failing the battle and retrying, I realized I just timed it well.
1:44 Apparently the bass note there is actually a bug in Earthbound's sound driver, since it was pitch-shifted too high, but it sounds so natural in the song it was never fixed.
@@LampreyKisses anti-climactic doesnt mean it sucks. it just means it doesn't have a climax. this track never has a clear climax, but instead it itself feels climactic as a whole.
I saw someone say once that they think the "noxious gas attack" Porky can do in his boss fight is because the inside of his spider mech smells like overwhelming death. Rot, blood, decay. That has stuck with me. The effects of time travel on the body/Giygas has effectively destroyed Porky's body and he smells like a corpse is wonderfully dark.
In honor of one of the original comments that I read on the OG upload: song really just went from "it's a pleasure to meet you, sir" to "she calls me daddy too"
Wow I cant believe I just subbed to my arch enemy's channel... Edit: my profile pfp before this was Ness and I don't feel like changing the comment so yeah
Its amazing how this theme starts off with 8bit representing little bit of reason and conveniencing still left in pokey but when it shifts to the metal that boy you new next door is completely gone and there is no more reason left within him
yes it's pretty silly how if Paula doesn't spam Psi Shield Sigma the whole team is dead, minus Ness who gets fed a trillion levels he doesn't need for a boss he doesn't even fight.
Gangplank Galleon, Pokey Means Business, and the Boss theme from Plok, are good themes that started out normal and proceeds to drop fully metal/rock on the SNES.
Poor Pokey. Poor, little, terrified... weak Pokey. Pokey never figths you directly, both in EarthBound and in MOTHER 3, he uses machines. He's Giygas' rigth hand. Because, no matter how much of a monster he has become, he's still a child, he's emotionally and physically weak. This phase is challenging because: - You must heal if you plan on using attacks like PK Starstorm Ω which hit multiple enemies, since Giygas will reflect the attack; - Pokey's spider mech can discharge a "really stinky gas" (chances are that he farted, lol) which lowers Ness and Co.'s ATK. If you don't pass to the second phase fast enough you'll have to use only PKs and items, since bashing will do almost nothing. But then you'll finish your PPs and items. Does Pokey punch you? No. Does Pokey use a PK attack? No. Does he really release his rage like this song does? No. Is he enjoying seeing Ness and his friends helpless, alone, calling out for help? Not really. He wants to be the "cool guy", he wants to impress Ness. It's so sad how Pokey has been corrupted so much, how Pokey has become such a monster, when all of this could've been avoided. And I think that this is what makes him emotionally weak: his insecurity and his fear of losing Ness played a big part in making him become a monster. He's taken it too far. If Ness wouldn't have been so silent. If his parents wouldn't have been so abusive. If Giygas didn't become... this. If Giygas didn't have to attack the Earth. If George wouldn't have stolen PSI informations from the aliens. If the aliens wouldn't have kidnapped George and Maria... And if and if and if! It's all a big if, composted by multiple "if"s. And if it wouldn't have happened? So much pain would've been avoided... so much happiness would've been avoided. But is it really worth it? Actions that have been taken more than 100 years ago, which are surely the consequences of other actions, have lead to a domino effect, even after 1000 years passed, the consequences still had effect. Pokey is one of the characters whom have suffered the most because of it. He is, in some ways, Giygas 2. Is Pokey evil? No. Is Giygas evil? No. He's the evil. But he's not evil. What I'm trying to say? I just wanted to talk about how he never figths you directly. Then I started having ideas for more stuff to write about him and Giygas. I could've written multiple comments, I could've splitted this comment in multiple comments, but you know what? Screw it. I prefer to write my thoughts as they come in my mind. No proper division. And I didn't go in depth about what this song could mean, about what this song could rapresent, and about many more things, because I like to write my thoughts the moment they enter my mind. Also because writing this much makes YT lag. Do you have any thoughts about it? Share. That's one of the main reasons why the Internet exists, after all. But, you know what? While writing this comment, I have thought about something... The next time you're angry at someone, take in consideration what that person has gone through. They're too obsessed with the truth? Maybe some people they cared about lied to them, and hurt them. They don't do anything? Maybe they don't see the point of it. Maybe they lack motivation. There are a lot of Giygases out there. There are a lot of Pokeys out there. There are a lot of Masked Mans out there. Isn't this terrifying? I'm terrified, too. Isn't this sad? ...I'm so sad... too. Just... remember what the MOTHER series has taught you. Because it sure as hell taught me more than a lot of people and stupid books ever did. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to say: this song is an absolute banger. In case anyone wants to mess around with this song in the Sound Menu, then know that it's no. 69.
Lets talk about Porky, but before lets talk about Ness : Seriously small reflexion but i think a lot of people who played it (or not) either dinn't get the story, either infantilised and simplified it, either just blantly ignored the subtle message or worst confuse Ness and Ninten. By what i see of how people potray and/or see Ness as is sad asf seriously... No Ness isnt comparable to Ninten, Ness dinn't know about his psyshic power, no Ness dont become friend with people he just met it might be weird to say this but seriously i never saw the chosen 4 as friends seriously there is no freacking alchimie between them they only are following Ness beceause scenario said so and because some people or their instinct (in case of Paula) told them that Ness is the chosen one, NESS HIMSELF DONT SEEM TO CARE SINCE EVEN IN MAGICANT WE GET TO SEE NOTHING ABOUT WHAT HE THINK ABOUT THEM SERIOUSLY I DONT CALL THIS A FRIENDSHIP LMAO, not that its Bad , since its wanted by how its written its not something Bad its an Artistic decision and/or preference. Ness is not someone who purposely go save the world like ninten does, Ness isnt named mister leader by his classmate, his parents's first dialogue are litterally them reassuring him and telling him that they're here for him and there is nothing to worry about and small reminder about how fiction work : You NEVER introduce a character supposed to be already courageous and all since the begining as a child who became homesick and need his parents to support him, except if you dont know how to write story, and i think i can say without problem that Itoi KNOW VERY WELL HOW TO WRITE STORY SINCE *HE IS* A WRITTER especially in case of Ness's characterisation beceause, funfact : he's a lot inspired by his own daughter i dont think a writter like him who got inspired by its own child would does an awful writting like this especially since his game keep going on this logical state and evolution. (In simple term its impossible that its just an error of Itoi that Ness is shown reckless and needing to grow up and having self confidence.) Ness is Ness, a kid who is really attached to his family, Ness isnt a random cool kid extremely clever and heroic, he's a reckless kid who believe in redemption and in good people to the point of getting kidnapped by zombies later in the game and not even "learning" from it, beceause that's how he work ! He dont need to learn lesson beceause he just follow his philosophy nothing else, he think that everyone need a second chance (except of Giygas but its after Magicant and so his innocence being lost, accepting to let go people he loved who arent here anymore or the same person and accepting that sometime you cannot save everyone). Anyways After that introduction and "small digression" lets talk about Porky. Yes Porky is introduce as trouble maker *at first* and nothing else, just a random kid who is Ness's friend (and yes its canon its shown in BOTH character that they do care and take their friendship seriously, to make things more ironic there is more proof of Ness's feeling (not romantic of course even though i like this ship lmao) for Porky than Paula's where its like Tony with Jeff, Aka just onesided and never concluded lol) and just wanting to play outside (like Ness) since his parent litterally left him to go on restaurant alones. One scene made me get interest on Porky's treatment, a scene i love and one of my favorite one with him and Ness (After the one in Magicant who make me cry more than Mother 3's both tragic death but for this its obviously just my opinion and its beceause its not my sensibility, death of character is not new in Mother and im not someone who cry a lot on death scene). The moment when Porky come get Ness and beg for him to help him finding Picky. Thing i'd like to point out to people who compare Porky to h1tler (wich i Can understand but honnestly i think its a bit too execive especially for what he is in Earthbound at first like ill explain here : -Porky consider Sharks (who arent even that Bad lmao) as ruffian and so, as dangerous people. -hes really worried about his borther, yes he left him but Picky specificly say that its beceause he got scared, and as scaredy cat and a coward Porky is he still goes to Ness to ask him to help him to find his little bro so he dont get lost, attacked or worst punished by their parent (wich is why he say "my dad is really gonna get me on this one" -And my favorite one, im adressing to people who call Porky being a coward, are you aware that first Porky is a child ? A child who is beat up and negligated by his parents ? A child who yes abandonned his brother but still goes back to search for him after getting help of his bestfriend who have a freacking baseball bat ? A child who is defenless and scared about a local gang ? And most important, as coward Porky is he Dinn't let Ness goes alone, off course he does nothing, hide behind him and all but at least hes still with Ness he Dinn't left him (unlike his dog who did complain about going with them and helped a bit lmao), why ? Beceause Porky care about Ness simple as that, Ness is the only person he can count on, the only person who dont insult, beat up or negligate him, and most important, Ness's friendship , his love and support is his only reason to not let everything down and keep trying to stay in light, Ness is really his best friend and most important his only Friend and as coward as Porky is he will never let him searching for his brother alone in the night where a meteorite just fell down from the Sky, when a gang is getting more and more violent and with wild and dangerous animal around. And After that what happen ? His dad beat him and Ness left him without telling him anything (again not Ness's fault of course he have better to do than trying to get his best friend in danger if his parent end up find out that he dinn't obey to his punishement.) Later by searching for Ness he end up corrupted by carpainter who probably manipulated him to make him feel important and help him to get Paula to the cult and here Come the moment... THAT moment where everything have been destroyed : Its after this moment Porky became definetly corrupted and all by mani mani statue, everywhere Porky is found doing something, mani mani is never far aways, and when mani mani is destroyed he got crashed on an unkow place and probably kidnapped (beceause im pretty sure he dinn't end good after such crash and end up at least unconscious after this) by one of Giygas's army and so under Giygas's influence more than anyone else. The thing i like to point out is why Ness and Porky's friendship (or at least the part where it broke) is so important in the game, mani mani corrupt and brainwash people but not in basic way, she take the darkness of people's heart to make them evil, and whats the thing that could broke Porky enough to be totally broken mentally and litterally turned into a free host for Giygas's influence and indeed happened ? Losing Ness, losing his best friend, misunderstanding the person you love and care the most about and letting your emotion speak for you... just like this person you love but you dinn't know that they were also slave of their own emotion. And thats why i love Porky in Earthbound, he's a incredibly realistic character, how much there is people like Porky who ended bad because of a misenderstood or heartbroken ? And Earthbound only, i have empathy for him in Mother 3 but just empathy, beceause he try to remember good old time, he still love Ness even after being litterally heartbroken by him and most important, his goal is to destroy humanity only beceause well first Giygas put in his mind that humanity is the ultimate ennemy and all sins of this World and second beceause its humanity who made him like this in a way, its humanity who broke his friendship with Ness, its humanity who kept ruining his childood and all.
@@gay4sswhovian BASED. You, my friend, are BASED. People think that Ness and Paula are like Ninten and Ana, when there's barely any interaction between them, and when there is, it's usually just about saving the world and stuff like that. People think that they're just shy, but the truth is that the few characters who refer to them as a couple are just adults who "ship" children, LOL. Only at the end of the game they show a sign of friendship. There are little to no interactions between the party. Poo dedicates his life to his training, to his kingdom. Before the Muu Training, it's possible to talk to NPCs who tell him that he's become more serious (one of the things of EarthBound I like the most is the woman that tells him that his "training" changed him, implying that he's busy with a girl LMAO. It's funny 'cuz she's just inventing it), and, when he joins Ness, he says that he'll do everything Ness says. Clearly not a friend. Paula is extremely mature, she's calm, she didn't panic when she was kidnapped, TWICE. The kids who know her are quite mature, too, especially the kid who has "the face of a baby" but possess "the mind of an adult". A kid even says that she's like a mother for her. They've clearly been influenced by her maturity. She's doing it 'cuz she has also has too, she talks only when it's necessary. I think that Jeff would've talked more, but with a team like this, I can clearly see why he's silent as well. It's clear that the lack of interactions and absence of dialogues are Itoi's choices. In Arn's Winter Quest, a hack made by Radiation, some letters of the Saturn font have been modified to look like some characters' faces to show who's talking (an idea he later reused in UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE BTW), and it works! A very similar idea has been used for Super Mario Galaxy 2 (the symbols actually form an alphabet), it came out years after EarthBound, but still. They could've made a new font, or just use characters the Saturn font doesn't use (I'm pretty sure that in-game, only the numbers 1 2 and 3 are shown in Saturn font, they probably didn't even make other numbers in Saturn font). They could've also made the dialogue box's color change depending on who's talking. EarthBound has been programmed by people who seem to love drugstores without "store", ever read Tomato's analysis about EarthBound's text system? It's ridiculous how much code a simple line requires. If they managed to write everything with such a complex text system, then they sure as hell had the time to program dialogues between characters. So yeah, no doubt, Itoi chose to not add any dialogue. Ness has grown 'cuz the Apple of Enlightenment predicted it. I'm pretty sure that Poo and Paula could've defeated their evil sides, not really sure about Jeff. Ness was destinated to, he probably would've ended up like Pokey if he wouldn't have been one of the Chosen Four. Speaking of which, Pokey is, just like Giygas, a victim of the evil there is. It's sad that his parents, those horrible beings, haven't received any kind of punishment. Anyway, back to Ness... I feel like he's some sorta puppet. His parents tell him to be brave, to be a "thoughtful, strong boy", they keep reassuring him. Buzz Buzz tells him that he's destinated to save the world. In Ness' Magicant we see monsters he's defeated, which he probably uses as a way to stay strong (something like hey! I've defeated those guys! I'm strong, I can do this!), we see the few ones he cares about (his family and Pokey, he probably cares a bit about Picky), the other NPCs are just his thoughts and his memories. As you said, Paula Jeff and Poo aren't present. The Flying Men gradually go from courage to desperation, probably representing what he fears he'll become. But why do I think that he's some sorta puppet? Well... his Magicant. At the end of it, at the end of the Sea of Eden, resides his evil side. Ever played the hack ROM JoeBound? When you fight against this hack's version of Ness' Nightmare, it tells to the protagonist that if he defeats him, he'll never be the same. The same thing obviously applies to Ness, his evil SIDE is a SIDE of him (shocking IK), a part of him. When Ness defeats his evil side, Magicant dissappears. The realm of his mind dissappears. I feel like he's been forced to become completely good, so that he could've stood a chance against Giygas. But this destroyed a part of him, it made the realm of his mind dissappear. As if... his mind disappeared, in some way. Honestly, I don't think that all evil is bad, or at least, not completely. This would require another long-ass analysis so I'm not gonna explain why I think this. Poor Ness. Ninten goes around, with the upbeat banger "Bein' Friends" usually playing, with ACTUAL friends, a girl who loves him (she confesses it later but I doubt that Ninten didn't notice it), people complimenting and thanking him ("You really are amazing" is a line that made me feel better than anything in EarthBound made me feel), suffering from asthma and having less power attack than Ness but still kicking ass. Dude's REALLY got Guts. Ness goes around, with songs that represent the areas' general atmosphere and not his state, people who help him 'cuz they have to, barely anyone knowing all the good stuff he's done, often getting homesick, kicking ass but 'cuz he's been predicted to, not 'cuz he chose to. Ness and Pokey are characters who suffer but people tend to see them in ways they aren't. It really fits tho, especially in Pokey's case. He's misunderstood in-game and IRL, LMAO, poor dude! Oooooookay and that's all for this analysis. Would've replied sooner, I noticed your reply but I didn't read it completely, and I almost forgor 💀.
@@FanofGuardianTales WOW I LOVE YOU BRO YOUR ANALYSE IS PERFECT !!! FINALLY SOMEONE WHO READ THE GAME WITH MORE ACCURACY 😭 !! Do you have a discord ??? I wish i could discuss with you more about this subject cause youre litterally the first person EVER to have same view of the game !!! Someone thing ill just add is that : I like to think that even though Destiny said that Ness will save the World and all i like to think that beceause of his personnality Ness only get PSI addapted for him. Seriously when you think about it ALL and i say ALL PSI (so PK moves) are thing made to NOT hurting people or even made to heal people, Ness's PSI is only about stopping people without hurting or worst killing them like hypnotis (sleep) paralysis (cannot move), flash (crying) ect And yes i count PK Rockin too beceause : 1) the game specificly say that Rockin inst a PSI attack (or at least PK move) its an psychokinesis explosion and so it dont work same as PSI and even let think that Ness could use Rockin when he's in a destructive mood (either of rage, excitment, huge sadness ect) and 2) the original name is not Rockin its "fighting spirit" and not just that "fighting spirit" IS what Ness does have though the whole game (and not courage) and make him keep going, not just its also going in the logic that yes its personality of Psychic who give their PSI (or at least the ones they Can masterise and learn) but more important : Its an emotion, not an element or alignement its an emotion, a philosophy, a way to think and to live and most important its a very VERY powerful PSI thats Ness himself is scared of this attack and terrified about the Idea of using (wanting to or not) such powerful attack who could possibly KILLED someone as we can see via the Ness's nightmare boss who use this attack and Giygas who is the worst abomination in the game using more or less propersly to kill him. Thats why Ness is my favorite he mostly work like Olimar in Pikmin series (except Olimar is supposed to be realistic so he make huge mistake, have ego and hypocrite moment ect while Ness dont beceause hes written as pure soul) Both of them are people who want to solve everything by hurting the less living thing possible, they are 2 pacifist the destiny (and their closed people too unfortunally) forced to use violence and all to at least survive, and their only huge "mistake" (its in quote for Ness cause even if Olimar Dinn't do it on purpose Ness couldnt even do something about it since its his emotion speaking) was to leave someone they love and Care so much about behind wich lead them to get corrupted by the biggest evil force in their World. And i love these kind of character ! WE need more protagonist who are just human like Olimar or kind and pure soul like Ness but most important more protagonist like them who will Always try to use the most pacific way to end a conflict.... It make me so sad to see how Pikmin and especially Mother fandom potray them as generic garisue without personality while they have one and an awesome one just subtil one.....
well I can put how I feel about this song pretty easily. it's composed amazingly, to fit a finale - making you think your in an epic battle until the twist pops up afterwards (that is, Giygas turning into a bunch of RED MIST). It shocks you after all the battling you did to get past Porky, who was used almost as if just an object to weaken the entirety of the chosen 4. The way the song progressea with the fight is great, the way it keeps slowing down and speeding up, it really makes you feel like the music is moving with the fight. also i like that there's definitely some bits where its obvious that some Undertale songs took inspiration from this song 😭 overall, another banger from this ost, love it also my original comment: pokey means NOTHING
I’m surprised that the SNES can even do even pull a fast one, as it sounds like going from EarthBound on NES, to DOOM on SNES, after a single loop, as of its time to do a transitional loop like that at the time as I don’t know too many games during the 90s I kinda did such a thing of that extent.
I played this awesome game through several times but I remember the very first time reaching this part and that song...8-bit music in all its glory and then that electric guitar comes on! I nearly jumped out of my chair!!! I was like, "Holy shit! I wasn't expecting THAT!!!" Badass riff!
What makes this scene powerful to me is the reveal. Throughout the game we’re conditioned to believe that Giygas is like, some evil person directly controlling and hypnotizing people. Here it’s revealed that that isn’t true. Giygas IS evil itself. Or at least, he is now. Everything we’ve seen throughout the game, perhaps, isn’t a result of him controlling people, but of the simple fact that there is hate and malice in people. In my opinion, the way Pokey is (sort of) framed as having control over Giygas, or as an equal to him, is what makes him really start having impact as a villain here. It’s great. Pretentious rant over
I like how this song sounds like a Symphony, a Symphony of hatred and dispair. Its a good build up to the traumatizing sounds of gygases theme,it really messes with the brain..
You know the final boss is gonna be hardcore if the boss before it has this kind of hardcore music that would completely fit for your average final boss
I remember the first time I got through this battle, I managed to be with the whole party at 0 HP right after Porky starts speaking, so everyone survived enough to just see Giygas and die :) I'm so glad I was recording for some reason at this moment, so I can remember my luck (?) forever.
of all the moments you could die in during this final fight, that one feels the most striking. imagine spending your last moments of consciousness finally seeing for yourself the true face of the one who's opposed you for this whole journey, and it's just... something absolutely incomprehensible and horrifying
I played the final area for my friends at another's apt where he had 5.1 surround, and got a HUGE reaction when the cartoony game started slamming the metal. Everyone started choking on their... secret herb.. heh heh.
Before I even played mother 3 back in November of 2020, I always wondered where Porky ran off to and I thought he was just gonna do smth petty like kidnap Mayor Pinkle or smth.
Porky actually drops a REALLY subtle hint about how to beat Giygas, and it uses a mechanic that's basically overlooked throughout the entire game. The only other game I think I've ever played that had the stones to do that was Dragon Quest XI (where you use the Super Sword of Light as an item to weaken Calasmos)
I love how it has a quirky 8 bit facade and then goes into a metal guitar and percussion song. Wow for only a few KB of RAM the SNES sound chip was a beast.
This and Streets of Rage Interesting that Doom has existed that moment but to mix chiptune with industrial metal even for music industry it's been hard to imagine but for game it's definitely one-of-a-kind experience
