@@Dannacamilaa You can try and keep bending the wires up so the piece poking you can snap off throughout time.Mine was sticking me constantly on both sides and they were long and my wire is thin so I kept bending the wires in the back and one day they snapped off.I was relieved and shocked .My wire was still in all my brackets but the parts that was pocking me came off in the back.
@@DrGregAsatrian I have closing loops on both front teeth and the excess in the back are still straight so they poke me but I dont have any wax so what can I do Edit I do have wax I had to look for it
I got my braces yesterday. It hurts like hell. It's a mild pain but the fact that it's a regular pain it feels like a torture. Oh gosh!! I am not even able to focus while studying because it's poking me on my left cheek whenever I talk or eat. Headache sucks too.
That’s amazing I actually just got my brackets on a couple months ago and got 4 teeth removed I’m getting the wires in a couple weeks I’m exited but I have these painful bands that stretch between 4 teeth which means 8 teeth are having this bands that are basically mini power chains but they hurt really bad when they were put on and still hurt a little I have had this 2 times including this time but I’m getting the wires soon I am a little exited but a little not exited as well😞☺️
L S eventually you will no longer suffer pain when they close the gaps. The reason you feel pain is because of the wire. My orthodontist didn’t change the wire when my teeth were able to be on the maximum powered wire. So you will only get your ligatures and powerchain changed
Haywood Hey I actually don’t have the wire at the moment I’m getting them in about 2 weeks I’m exited but scared because they said they need to put anchors and I’m still confused on what that is but right now I have mini power chains on 4 teeth so that’s 8 teeth but when they put it in it hurt so so bad I don’t know if that’s normal.
After having braces for 2 years, I think it's better to just tough through the pain, after awhile your cheek will toughen up and it won't bother you until you get your next wire. That's what I do anyway
I just got my braces and pokey wire really makes it more difficult. I've been looking for this kind of video for a while. Thank you Dr. Greg! It's a big help. Really!
You are such an awesome young man and dentist. Your videos have helped me so much. I'm 60 years old and just could not stand having my bottom teeth get crooked and ugly, so I got braces. Yep, at age 60, what's wrong with me?!?!? Thank you for all of your help. I have a poky wire and it's driving me crazy, still watching the video to figure out WHY.
I’m 46 got mine last week, My teeth begin to space as I hit around 42 I should have gotten them earlier Iam going in the morning to get wires clipped in the back. It’s so sore and it was like my jaw was stuck to my teeth the second morning ouch!!
@@sharvarideo925 i just got mine tightened and she was like “do you feel anything poking” i said no, got home and ate some noodles, and now i have a pokey wire
@@amiyahancock3056 oh yes, happened to me too😭 then i went back to the dentist to get it fixed,i think you should also go or else you'll have cuts on your cheeks
wow after watching numerous vids Iv finally found someone who explains things perfectly, thank you....great common sense info..why couldnt my orthodontists have told me all this...?
Its my first time getting braces on. I just had it yesterday and today, i have borken brackets already and the wire is poking my gums. It hurts like hell. This is very helpful for the first timers like me.
I had pokey wires in all 4 ends of upper and bottom of my braces. It was newly installed and I didn't notice until I got home. The dentist did no cut the wires short enough. I tried to cut it with nail clippers but it was too far behind my mouth and the nail clippers. I had to wait for 2 days to get an appointment to get the wires cut. It's horrible experience as I felt tremendous discomfort.
I had a pokey wire that caused a sore about three weeks into my treatment. By the time I figured out that it was a pokey wire and not a bracket problem, I had a follow-up. They cut the wire, and I haven't had a problem since. I wouldn't be surprised if it returns, though, because I'm still in the initial stage of correcting crowding.
I live 3 hours away from my orthodontist, and I had gotten braces but then I got majority of my braces removed for a treatment, and now I’ve gotten my full braces on again, so I knew pain in the beginning was normal, but it’s been like 2 weeks and I have still been getting ulcers from the molar tooth, didn’t know why but now I saw it was because my wire had shifted and it was poking me somewhat deep, thank you so much for your videos, your a life saver!
I love your channel :) i’ve learned so much before i got my braces thank you so much :))) I actually need my braces for four years but I really like them 🥰
Day 3 of my brace and the end wire keeps poking my cheeks, dont have an orthowax cause my Orthodontist doesnt have stock yet, hopefully this monday i get mine already🙏🏻
@@mairazafar6594 Thanks but I don’t really use the wax anymore Bc they don’t hurt but good news is that I had my appointment and they cut my wires! 💃🏼🕺🏼
@@mairazafar6594 it’s not painful at all. But that’s probably bc when I commented that is like the first week of my braces and I’ve had two appointments since then and I said it was pokey and they fixed it :)
Thanks for this! I actually got my braces about a year ago, but my wire slid to the right and I didn’t know how to fix it, and it didn’t seem like a big enough deal to call an appointment. Using the back of a toothbrush to push it is a very good idea :)
Thank you so much for sharing all these options! I’m dealing with a pokey wire right now and am having no luck shifting it back in. Might be because it’s so far back in my mouth and I can’t get behind it to give it enough of a push, but it is tied in as well. But I’m okay living the wax life for another month till my next appointment!😁
@@DrGregAsatrian no it's not a prob, the orthodontist said that the bracket loose is bcs of a problem of my bite, when we repair that problem, he'll repair the bracket, but i am very careful :)
As a kid, my pokey wire incidents (about 3 over 3 years, so not bad) were due to spacing...so the wire was placed bigger and as my teeth car together, it inched backwards. Thankfully, it never caused such a problem that I had to visit my Orthodontist, but just a random poke here or there. 🙂
Just noticed how much you show your teeth and it made me wonder after years and years of hiding my teeth, how much time will it take after my treatment is over for me to want to show my teeth?
The wax I use is Vitis orthodontic one, from dentaid. I don't even need to dry my teeth before putting it on and stays for a really long time, even after eating hot foods.
I used to wear a braces back in my highschool days, but I didn't wear my retainer everyday, and then my wisdom teeth coming out so my teeth is now crooked again (not as bad as it was before I wore braces tho) but still, one of my biggest regret :'( now I'm an adult, really want to get a braces again but with this situation, pandemic, lockdown, etc. I don't think it's possible.
Update: I'm getting braces again! Just got them yesterday and have 1 tooth extracted. Have a sore all over my mouth but tbh this is still better than have a crooked teeth
i have fangs really high up on my gums in my front teeth, so when my wire was poking it was cutting my lip and it hurt, i got desperate and just cut it a little with nail clippers and its been fine ever since
I just had my braces today on the upper jaw, and just my bad luck that the orthodontist' was out of wax. It started poking me after three or four hours after my appointment. 😢😭 Lo and behold! This video was in my recommendation. 🧐🤩 I'll try the pencil/toothbrush trick tomorrow cuz its poking my cheek on only left side. Thnx for all your videos Doc! They are very enlightening.😇🥰
In the beginning of my treatment, the wire used to get shifted from my midline, so I used to push it back using my long nails!! 😬 ,And then after my first premolar extractions, I got powerchains,so because of space closure,I suffered from pokey wire!!
It’s been 5 months since I started on braces. Every time I go to the dentist I get anxious and depressed because is this poking problem! My orthodontist can’t still get a solution! 😞
@@DrGregAsatrian I had this same exact thing happened and was able to reinsert the wire with tweezers. Should I still see the ortho incase the length needs to be increased? My next appointment isn't for a month.
Great videos! If you can, please do a video on open bite causes and treatments. I have one that developed a month [after] my braces were installed. I haven't had my first tightening visit yet to see what will be done about it. Thanks!
I normally have pokey wire when its a week before my review is due . My case is closing the gap and the wire just pushes to the back . I am on self-ligating braces and I am on my 11th month :) thank Dr Greg for all the wonderful sharing!
I bought literal wire cutters from the hardware store and they’re awesome. I fumbled with trying to cut my wire with nail clippers for a along time then I gave up, when I was walking by the hardware store a lightbulb went off in my head. Now I have wire cutters and can snip the wire with no problem. I’ve had brackets and wires fall off my wisdoms many times now and I’ve only had braces for like four months. It’s a pain in the ass when I am the perfect braces patient. I cut all my food up bite sized, I don’t eat anything crunchy anymore, and I brush and floss multiple times a day.
Im loving ALL of your videos, so informative💕 I have a bracket way back, lower bottom that has caused my inner jaw to swell, hence, I end up biting the excess skin (swollen jaw)...OUCH!! Sometimes the wax doesn't always stick....just aggravating ☹ Glad you mentioned the bracket has to by dry before applying wax....WOW!! BIG DIFFERENCE!! Luckily, no sores developed (knock on wood), just an irritated inner jaw. Just 4 weeks in braces, long journey to go but I LOVE the look of my braces😁
Hey there! I have braces too.And sometimes I face this problem too.i simply place some cotton at the end of the wire and stick it there .it really helps a lot. i eat with the cotton and then when I brush I remove them and place new cotton. Cotton has no side effects also. Hope this helps you all
Hey Doc, Can you please make a video about getting braces with a missing front tooth. My story is when I was in elementary school I had an accident which broke one of my front tooth's in half. My parents took me to a terrible local dentist, and due to me and my parents ignorance, the dentist decides to shave the half tooth down and put a fake tooth with a rod in the hole of the half tooth. After a while it came off multiple times, which led to my parents taking me to a better dentist which told us, since the other dentist messed up and shaved the tooth down, the best thing they can do is remove the whole tooth with the root and give me a temporary denture (which I disliked and never wore) and in the future when I'm much older I can get a implant. After a while I started to realized the gap of the missing tooth was naturally closing and my denture could not fit in anymore, which made me wonder how would I be able to get a implant if my teeth aren't in the correct position and thought braces could help. I am 18 right now and want to know what I should do.
My top braces have been a breeze but when i got the bottom ones on after two months with top only Iv been through hell and back, I cant chew properly anymore and my top teeth keep hitting my bottom braces at front causing one to fall off, Iv had pokey wires etc etc but its slowly getting better as my bottom teeth were realy bad and crowded and crooked, one night I just felt like crying and saying I cant do this anymore..but im persevering...
Hello 🙂 I've been watching your videos ever since I've been mentally preparing myself on getting braces. Now that I have them, I wanted to know about bionators since my orthodontist mentioned I might need them in the future.
I had a poky wire when I had my braces put in 2 weeks ago. I told the tech and instead of cutting it flush against my bracket she bent it and it unbent 💀 worst thing is that I only have my front 8 teeth with braces so when I love my mouth I create paper cuts..
Want to cry the wire literally made a little hole on my cheek and the wire to thick to cut so I have a cotton ball inside my mouth to avoid the wire from doing a bigger hole smh
I have a pokey wire because we had to add extra wire to bring down two teeth, it hurts pretty bad, but its a sign for me to know that Im seeing progress.
Pokey wires suck! Lucky me I don’t have any this time I just got my bands and wires changed this past Tuesday, I’m just glad they took off my coil spring! That darn spring once they put it through the wire back in nearly July bothered me for weeks it just kept hurting the inside of my lip it even cut me once! I couldn’t get wax to stay right on the spring so I’d put it on the brace next to the spring and have it cover it that way, but I’m just happy it’s gone now 😅
I have a major overjet that was not corrected properly with the twin block braces. Did not know at the time that you need to wear a retainer at the end to help the teeth settle. I was expected to retract the teeth by myself. 17 years later, my partner has offered to help correct it by paying through his private health fund. Going to see what is recommended and if braces are required, I'll get them put on.
PLEASE, its day 2 or 3 (not 72 hours yet) of me getting braces and I already feel a bit of that wire poking out. I wasn’t worried that it was poking out, I was only worried that it has only been a few days. I mean, i felt a little better after this video
I remember the time the steel ligature tie holding the two piggy-back wires on my upper teeth sort of shifted towards my lip and caused it to bleed. That was not fun. Wax definitely helped though! I'm glad I don't have piggy-back wires anymore.
@@xbtx6497 Nothing to complain, day 3 after pokey wires and a destroyed mouth flesh I end up going back to my orthodontist basically saying that I've got some pokey wires and my brackets are piercing my cheeks. She cuts the wires and adds some plastic on top of the brackets to make more space. After that it stopped hurting, I'm pretty sure what I was experiencing wasn't very normal. its been around 11 days I think and I'm fine. Nothing hurts and everything is doing great, just 2 more years and ill have that " Hollywood " smile! 😄
This is helpful my son is new to braces for about a month. The last bracket came off at the top leaving a long pokie wire. The Orthodontic office told me to clip it to the next bracket until the next appointment 🙃. I said there are RU-vid videos for that right ??? lol 😆. Thank you so much for this video 🙂
In my braces and then my front teeth because my front teeth like glue and I’m shy and I getting scared and I want to pick red and green because green to my favorite color red I’m like crying right now😍😍😍
Wax. I've found that having a DRY Tooth or bracket, but a WET finger is the way to get the wax to go where I want and stick. If your finger is dry, the wax will stick to it.
I can definitely say that pokey wires were terrible I got them a lot because the person who put my wires on made them too long and I don’t have to go back and have them bent a certain way so they didn’t poke me
hey! major questions thats been bothering me for a while. 1.) i broke my bracket (top, my left side, farthest back bracket) so i went back and they simply just removed it. its been around 1-2 appointments since they removed it and they still havent put the bracket back. should i be worried or ask them to replace it? 2.) background info, i have my second molars that are impacted (its sideways, like how most wisdom teeth are) because i have a small mouth. this is the main reason why the bottom back brackets arent connected to the wires. again, should i be concerned? this corona thing will most likely affect my treatment since i might need to get these teeth removed
So I can answer the first question, but idk about the second one sorry- but personally, if that missing bracket is affecting your teeth movement, (teeth aren't moving, shifting in an abnormal way) then i feel like you should let your orthodontist know about that. but if it's not doing any harm, then i think you should be fine! but dont take my word for it, thats just my opinion haha :)
My orthodontist forgot to clip the wires when I got my braces on. I had full length wires stabbing me in the gums and cheek for three months. I thought it was normal but.... no
When I had braces pokey wires were the worst especially towards the end of my treatment because the wires kept sliding in fact after braces treatment my dentist said my cheeks on the inside were so swollen
