Technical Notes: Never try to put a clutch from a 800cc machine on a smaller/larger cc motor or vice versa.

Awesome video!! One thing I could add is the P-85 clutch dates all the way back to 1985! (Fun Fact: That's where the 85 comes from). The new Polaris P-22 clutch for the BOOST and 9R started in 2022 (Hence the name P-22)!

Yes this is true! Great fun fact! Do you think we will see the p-22 last the long 37 YEARS like the p-85 did or will we get a new clutch before then. Time will tell!

Hey question for you, are the weights in a p85 the same throughout all years? I want to order some adjustable ones for my gen 2 just want to make sure I order the correct weights
@FeederCountry
@FeederCountry 3 года назад
your gen 2 should take a Polaris series 10 weight.

Nice. Any vids/resources on in-depth clutch maintenance for newer Titans? I’m getting a 2022 soon and trying to do most of the work myself. Thanks!
@FeederCountry
@FeederCountry 3 года назад
The clutch maintenance on your titan is gonna be easy! Blow it out with compressed air and clean the clutch faces. At the end of the season check the rollers and weight bushings. Replace as needed. Those clutches on the trail sleds last 5,000 miles plus.

The p.85 on larger bore sleds are What they call and HD clutch hence the dome outer cover vs the flat offering a larger bushing to take more abuse and also the change in spider/ roller size also I believe the bore sizes are 30mm and 32mm as the changed the crank size due to them snapping off in 05 like my polaris fusion 900 recalled and some of the cranks where updated to the larger 32mm at dealers discretion making a grey area on sizes not a professional just speaking from experiences and passed down knowledge. You can run a p85 non HD on a big bore sled there just not as well built i guess as long as it has the same taper and bore size.

To add some confusion as it will come up for some people. In 2020 the crank taper on the 800’s was changed to the same as the 850 so for clutches off 2020 800’s and 850’s they are interchangeable.

My 1980 Polaris Apollo has a 'closed cover' clutch, is it also considered a P85? I have a hard time finding info on it.

u had it right, weight savings and structural integrity, also material savings.. it all adds up im sure performance to with the lower rotating mass, that might even be the main reason that kinda ties in with weight savings quick edit...nevermind u mentioned that exact thing on ur next clutch explanation lol :p i need to start finishing the videos im watchin before commenting, im constantly writin comments jus to have to delete them im leavin this one screw it lol

So you are saying that I can not take the secondary clutch off my 2010 600 RMK & put it on my 2013 800 RMK? And what would be the reason for this?
@FeederCountry

This video is about the primary clutch. Not the secondary you are asking about.

I'm rebuilding my p-85 off an '02 xc800sp "edge x" I ordered a primary rebuild kit, and the buttons (.250) are too thick and do not clear the towers. I've called many dealers and clutch part manufacturers and they say their buttons very from . 250" to .182" in thickness. Have you had any problems getting the right size buttons?
@FeederCountry
@FeederCountry 3 года назад
I have not. I use OEM parts when I rebuild clutch.

@@FeederCountry I bought them from EPI Performance which is known for having good quality parts. But I called a local polaris dealer and they said the OEM buttons are the same size. Maybe I could shave them both down until I get the .002 clearance?

Really there are only 3 different P85 clutches from the 1980s to now. The 3 got updates and revisions for durability but didn't changed the application or function. #1 (1981 to late 2000s) Fugi engines "Fuji short taper" #2 Polaris engine "liberty engine" (1996 to late 2000s) #3 Big taper Polaris (2008 to 2021) I also believe the 900 twin had a different taper but we do not need to talk about that. 😉 And last note. From 1980 and new sleds with trailing arms only have 3 different chassis. #1 Indy chassis. #2 edge chassis #3 pro x chassis. Wedge is just a hood design. Evolved as a hood design Aggressive is a hood design Gen 2 is a hood design And edge is a hood design. Take care. I like your videos.

I'm trying to figure out how to tell the difference between the p85 secondary and the p90 secondary?
@FeederCountry
@FeederCountry 2 года назад
p-85 and p-90 are the names given to the primary clutch only. The secondary clutches use different names like TSS-04 or TSS-98.
@FeederCountry
@FeederCountry 2 года назад
The TSS-98 clutch uses a helix and buttons, the TSS-04 uses a helix and rollers.
@MrGcard100
@MrGcard100 Год назад
TSS-04 or TSS-98 are roller secondary clutches made by TEAM. Nothing to do with Polaris and P85 or P90. P90 secondary clutches are much smaller in diameter than the P85 secondaries. The P90 also used a skinnier drive belt. P90 system (primary and secondary clutches) were used both on the Polaris ATVs of the 90s as well as the low-HP sleds during this time - I'm talking the 340 and 440 fan-cooled engines in the Indy Sport and Indy Lite models.

So what’s the best clutch for a 1996 rmk?
@FeederCountry
@FeederCountry Год назад
If it was my sled I would run the exact same oem clutch that was sold with the sled. Then I would get a slp clutch kit so you can use their adjustable weights to tune the clutch a little. Especially great for elevation changes and trail conditions.
@taraszakordonskk5731
@taraszakordonskk5731 Год назад
@@FeederCountry so the 2001-2004 p85 would not be an upgrade?
@FeederCountry
@FeederCountry Год назад
@@taraszakordonskk5731 I personally don’t like swapping clutches around like that. I think the 2001 clutch runs a different belt than what your 96 does. So you might have to run a belt that’s too hard of compound for the HP your sled is making. There is a lot of variables. I think being able to tune the clutch via adjustable weights will far out preform any gain you might see from changing a clutch.

They're all P85 clutches (except the new P22, and the P90 for the low-HP sleds in the '90s). None of the clutches in this video are for your 1996 Indy Trail, not even the one from the XLT. For the 1990s era Fuji motors, the rule of the thumb is that all the twin cylinder P85 clutches are interchangeable amongst each other, and all triple cylinder P85 clutches are interchangeable amongst each other. The triples and the twins used a different offset on the clutch, so they sit different distances from the engine block. You can see the difference on the back side of the clutch where the taper bore is. The triple clutches are like what is shown in Clutch #1 in this vid. The twin clutches have their taper bore in the center of a raised boss on the back side (with the fins).
