My first boss, a self made man, millionaire, wouldn’t know it by looking at him, but anyway he had a developer that wouldn’t leave him alone about buying his property, Finally he sold it, We’ll that had 15 acres and he also owned the 20 acres across the road. He built his own Custom home. When Bank South went under we had a branch in our town, I don’t know how he did it but he bought the bank vault door! I was there when we jackhammered down the wall it was mounted to and loaded that heavy SOB up with a track hoe onto a lowboy trailer and took it back to his house and unloaded it in the barn. So when he designed his new home not only did it have a bank vault in it, he also had a two lane target range that ran the length of his front porch which was easily 40-50ft long underneath the front porch itself. I remember setting that vault door when the new walls were poured and the door almost tipped the track hoe over because of the weight! He told me one time,,, Boy you need to quit wasting your money buying beer and dope and buy yourself some land, you know why son,,, because they ain’t gonna make no more of that shit!!!! Still talk to him till this day. I was 18 then now I’m 52! He is one wise man!

Once they realize the amount of power they have, and that they can get away with, or not be noticed, or suspected, and they can fly under the radar completely, it almost always corrupts them and ends bad.

I totally felt that one . What I’ve always noticed is when you’re selling your ass off and don’t need any investor’s help they’re right there begging but on the come up nobody is around. So I totally understand why you didn’t go for it. If you jump into a partnership everything you built will be shared with someone else that didn’t experience the grind you had to go through. Nobody wants another person trying to change what you know just to satisfy them

Good story and if it's too good to be true it isn't. I used to party with a dude that had a car lot that specialized in used corvettes. He was living large until he got caught selling cars he didnt own and not paying off the loan on trades. . He spent several years as a guest at the GrayBar hotel.

Tom Hartley the super car dealer here in the UK. All his inventory is paid for. The dealership is in the grounds of his house. The guy will have the latest super car on his show room floor within days of the main dealer getting them in. PS Never put a car on consignment, especially if its high end. Look at the dealer in California that went under. Then he started flogging off the stuff that should of gone with the car. Luggage tool kits ect.

That is a really good story and a life lesson for everyone. Many folks would have jumped at the chance to partner with the police chief, assuming he was straight. Nice work, Mr Pitts.

Safe rooms are actually pretty common in luxury new construction homes. If he has lots of cash it’s easier to build new than to buy a house. Contractors love cash. Much cheaper to put it a safe room in new than to add one later. When you realize that when properly stored, guns only go up in value you will quickly see why most gun collectors are able to trade into massive collections worth millions. Way easier than trading stocks and much less financial risk. Another way he could spend cash and by keeping them all he stays off the radar as a frequent seller. Definitely dodged a bullet on the money laundering. A used car dealer is an ideal target as they need cash to buy cars and everyone loves cash. Learned a lot from this story. Kinda surprised they got caught.

If your in the car business any amount of time you will see some wild shady crap. Dealership I worked at sold to all the drug dealers throughout the dodge charger craze right after the hemi came back out. Had a gm and finance Mgr smuggling drugs from California to ky in used cars they bought and transported from Cali. And that is just the start. The money laundering I witnessed was mind boggling. But like normal they were eventually caught. Not sure who went to jail and how much they were able to pin on them but it's more common than any one believes.

I agree got to do it on your own. Doesn’t mean everyone has too. I have had people say they would like to get into business with me. But have kinda been like sorry no thanks. I have my plan if I can get it going great if not I’m going to keep trying. I do have my own business but it’s not frowning how I would like it. But that’s life.

7:30 same here. I'm not into the whole gun collecting. I'm more for utilitarian use. Self and/or home defense, hunting, and target shooting. While I do own two guns that are now considered collectibles, due to the manufacturers discontinuing production. These were not collectible when I purchased them brand new from the firearm retailer. Would I actively seek out collectible firearms, and pay ridiculous money for such firearms? Not likely.

What would you say is a good profit of each sale investment/sell price. Reason i ask is i average half or slightly under my investment on every car ive bought to resale. Lucky out of the 15 plus in the last year and a half or so im made money off each one.

Absolutely right. Too many chefs spoil the meal. The other thing (which I'm sure you well know) about doing it on your own is you know it all the way - top to bottom. It lets you smell the trouble before it sh!ts when you hired someone to do things. Lotta guys get "an investor" relationship that goes south at some point. It's just a hard thing to keep straight it seems. The only ones I know of that worked were a limited term thing where a guy wanted to be the bank (floorplan) and earn interest for a few years - and stayed out of the biz. Even then not too many ended well.... I could count the successes on one hand I'd guess. Thanks for sharing
