In his early days on the police force, Ron experienced plenty of excitement, and, as a result, plenty of trauma. The crack epidemic in New York City kept #police officers busy, and Ron was right in the middle of the action. A relentless pursuit of “the bad guys” made him witness to many senseless acts of violence.
Then came 9/11. Ron was a first responder at Ground Zero. The repeated exposure to trauma gradually began to affect him; he was hurting, but he didn’t know what to do with the hurt. Ron’s personality shifted. He became a controlling, angry person. He says he wasn’t aware of this change until his family left him, and all he was left with #cumulativePTSD.
He finally sought help, and is now a terrific advocate for mental health. Helping others seems to be a significant way that Ron can help himself. He volunteers in his community, he’s a mentor and a coach for teens, and, importantly, he’s taking classes on #peersupport and #stressmanagement.

Mr. Ron Griffith......your message resonates so deeply within me. I am a retired Police Officer, as was my kid brother. My brother committed suicide last month, and his death forced me to finally face why I've felt the way I have for so many years. Despite all of the brokenness you may feel, and use to hide from others, you Sir are without a doubt, the hero you strived to become. Although it often comes at a heavy price, no one can ever take that away from you!

Dan that's terrible. I could not stand it if one of my siblings passed away for any reason. Yes I am a retired police officer myself. All the best. I hope you've been okay in the four years since you posted this.

Thank you Mark. One thing policing and the death of my brother has taught me, and that is, if you don't roll with the punches, you'll drown.@@marknorris1381

I met him back in October 2018. He was a very kind, down-to-earth man. To hear his story was inspiring and I just wanted to hug him. It was an honour to shake hands with him, and I hope he's doing well nowadays. Thank you for your service, and best wishes to you Mr. Griffith.

Thank you for your service. I was recently hurt bad by what eeemed to be a stressed out policeman. And I have a mental health diagnosis . I tried to call him to talk . I just want to forgive and heal both of us. It was in Chicago. I have nightmares . It's not his fault . It's the way of the world . I just want to talk to him . Help him . And be helped . All the complaints in the world won't help. They'll make it worse. You are a good man of courage . Thanks .

Some effective treatments for PTSD include prazocin for nightmares and exposure therapy for fear and anxiety. SSRI's are also effective for anxiety but stay away from benzodiazepines as physical dependence develops within four weeks.
