Bishop Spong is amazing. He's one of the few Christians who can see through the manmade dogmatic bullshit into the heart of Yeshua's (Jesus') message, that is that everyone, everyone, is deserving of love and compassion because we're all children of the divine. Bravo, sir. Blessed be. + )O(
@Hey Zeus I'm sorry, did you assume I'm a Christian? Because I'm not. The "Blessed be" at the end of my comment should've given that away. I'm an eclectic Pagan. Also, yes, I still stand by that Bishop Spong is one of the few who "gets it". Christianity as a whole wasn't what Jesus intended; he never meant to found a new religion centered around himself. Jesus was a lifelong practicing Jew who was preaching a reform of Judaism to fellow Jews. Christianity wasn't even a thing until decades, if not centuries, after his death. Therefore, trying to fit Jesus' life and stories into institutions that didn't even exist when he did will obviously create contradictions, plot holes, and breed hypocrisy in many of its fundamentalist followers. It's why I left Christianity altogether. I found far more Christ-like people outside of it, in the teachings of Wicca.
Yeah he is no Christian, have you read any of his stuff, he denies the resurrection, he denies the virgin birth he’s denies the divinity of Jesus, he hold to the social gospel, and he denies the inerrancy of the Bible.
I doubt that JSS is an atheist in denial ...even though I do get your point. I rather believe that Spong has simply "got" what Christianity is supposed to be all about.

@@pleaseenteraname1103 we don’t really know. I do know that I am definitely NOT a Christian and I am glad I left the faith. It has caused me nothing but trouble. I believe all religions are bad. I’m an agnostic atheist. While I don’t ever put down someone for their religion I don’t believe in it and I can’t stand the hatred spewed by religious fundamentalists.

I used to agree with Spong about the Bible, but I take the Bible much more seriously now--reading between the lines is very important. And I'm about as left wing as they get.
Spong seems like a nice guy, but when he says "I don't want to believe it works that way" it sounds like he's admitting that he believes what he wants to believe. Which (do I have to say this on a bill maher vid?) scares those of us who believe things based on evidence. Although, he does make a brilliant point at the end.
As I see, he believes in things based on evidence. But he also has faith. His comments show that he has a somewhat rationalist view of the Bible, but then accepts that faith works in another way, and don´t try to impose faith on on areas where reason is better.
I mean, even in science two scientists can use the same set of data to support two opposing theses. Everything, no matter what, always boils down to an opinion, and opinions are subjective.
I love how everybody points out what an arrogant, self-centered fool Kemper is, but they don't do it in a mean-spirited way. It's just, "Hey, buddy, here's where your holy book contradicts itself and why you shouldn't be such a zombie to it." They were trying to get him to think for himself but the poor bastard was just too brainwashed. Also, Bishop Spong is one of the few Christians who "gets it". Jesus' teachings were meant to be a mystery school, a way to understand the divine if one put the effort in, not something to be made into a strict dogma and followed blindly. Bravo, Bishop. Eh, the Christian they had on was far from a biblical scholar much less had very good biblical knowledge and therefore it wasn’t a great match up. He didn’t even understand biblical hermeneutics and couldn’t explain contextual reasonings for levitical rules. They kind of ganged up on him and pummeled him. That was brutal.
