When we bought Sophys she was laid up for 3yrs and started first turn. We did have a cooling issue, which was quickly solved. Best of luck with the new boat may you share many great adventures together!
How to avoid that mess when changing the oil filter: take a screwdriver or a punch and hammer it into the bottom of the filter. You will throw the filter away anyway. let drain. You can also use the screwdriver driven into the hole to unscrew the filter. BTW, the fuel filter is a Bosch 1 457 434 051, the oil filter is a FIAM FT 4763. The Volvo filters are just rebranded and cost extra for nothing. Also: don't leave the impeller in the waterpump over winter. Take it out, grease it and keep it in a bag attached to the motor (don't forget to reinstall in spring)
Never heard of taking out the impeller over the winter... I do understand why you might. But it's never been a issue and because I would replace ever second year it shouldn't be an issue to leave in for 2 winters. Also I feel that might leave more of the engine exposed to the elements over the winter months. In a damp moist country like Ireland this might well lead to rust in the water pump. But pearcing the filter is a good idea. Might try before on the next service in the spring. Thank for getting in touch!
They are a great little unit Chris. Polly ours is ticking like a clock. Good regulator servicing and not over pressuring them and they'll just keep going. Best of luck with you have many happy hours with it....

Great video, thanks! Going to change the oil this season for the first time on our boat, which has the same engine built in. Did you consider checking the fuel tank? Seems like a lot of dirt in the fuel filter. We ran across the same problem, causing the motor to stop in heavy weather. (also, the chain of the fuel tank cap broke off and fell in the tank and was sucked into the fuel pipe, clogging it even more, took a while till we found out)
Great job! Brilliant to know how your engine works. There a great little engine. That year the filter did look quite blocked up. Every other service it looked almost as clean as the new one thank goodness. We're keeping a good eye on it. Even took pictures as it was so clean we couldn't believe it. What do you sail?

Great video but i think it would be useful to show people how dirty your old filters are especially the fuel filter. I don't think people are always aware that they really are doing a job and need changing on a regular basis.
Hi Tommy, believe it or not I do have photos of the filters. But they were spotless... So a bad example. We've been very luck and not had very dirty or clogged up filters to show as an example. I would totally agree with you on people not doing filters and annual maintenance. I would also say checking their engines during the season and on long passages. We would check Polly regularly on passage, for leaks around seals pumps etc... Then an oil check when all is cooling down. Cheers for watching, FWS.
Hello ! Thanks for the video ! I have a question, do you have 2 fuel filters ? I just got a boat with a 2001 on it, and there is a fuel filter just above the oil filter, and another fuel filter, the same as yours on the video, but it isn't connected and I am thinking of connecting it again, unless this fuel filter was from a previous engine I don't know... Do you have an idea ? Thanks a lot !
Hi Thibault, cheers and thanks for checking out the video. I hope you found it somehow useful. Yes, we do have two filters as you said the one on the engine above the oil filter. The primary one is along the fuel line on the way to the engine. It to us is the more important one and we'll worth having working. It then your 1st line of defense from any fuel issues. If possible in a place that's quite easy to change. Our has a glass bowl hanging which helps spot if there's any major dirt or an almost bigger issue water in your fuel. So if you can defo fit the second one, I would if we didn't have one. For the sake of some pipes and a bit of time it could well get you out of a sticky situation someday.... And always carry a couple of spare filers for all your filter and an impellor or two! Best of luck with the new boat! I hope you have as much fun as we do with Sophys.

Hi Robin, cheers for checking the video out hope it was some way helpful. We do the filter on the engine every 3 year... So will be replacing this year. We do carry spares for everything as well so if we should have an issue we should be able to sort it out. What type of bost is your engine on? There a great little unit once well maintained. Nice boat! We're around the same size so.. A great size! We're out of the water 2 weeks now ourselves. Starting to compile the list of winter jobs thank goodness it's not too big. Yet still a few bits to be seen too. But like anyone fond of the water knows boats don't belong on the hard.... So both ourselves and Sophys miss the sea daily. @@fairweathersailors Hi started to winterize the boat yesterday, our marina would not let me start the engine now its on blocks and props, the service will have to wait until its back in the water, its only done a few hours since its last servivce so should be okay. Obviously lockdown has hit again so parts suppliers could be closed for a month. I meant to say your boat is called Sophy's mine's called Sophie's World, weird coincidence.
Hi fair weather sailors . I too have a Volvo penta 2001 engine and ism winterising this weekend . The bust is out the water now and have some questions. The manual says drain cooling system down (raw water cooled) but didn’t say how . Will opening the seacock do that?
Hi Richard, what we do is disconnect the raw weather intake from the hull fitting and stick into a bucket. Fill a bucket with water and vinegar mix 50/50. Run the engine till the bucket is almost empty. Leave that sit for about 30mins. Then fill the bucket again with a hose and run for a while to make sure all the sea water and or water vinegar mix is out. While the engine is still running and bucket full turn off the hose and put in some antifreeze and keep till the bucket is almost empty... Then stop the engine you should have the engine full of a mix of fresh water and antifreeze. You should be winter ready... (I must put a video together explaining it better.... 😉)
@@fairweathersailors hi thankyou for your help, I’ve winterised the engine by draining out the salt water but poured the antifreeze water mix straight into the strainer with the engine running , I removed the thermostat first though to ensure the mixture went into all the water cooling water ways .i did an oil and filter change also . Only problem i encountered is the anode is stuck in the engine when I tried to remove it. I’ve made a puller and going to remove hopefully next time I’m there then top up again.
Hi Richard, so glad you got someway sorted. Putting the antifreeze in will help and work its way through the system so that's a great result. As for the anoid, I know the first time I changed it there was a lot of white build up in the chamber as our engine had been idle for 3 yrs.... Do you know did the previous owner change the anoid? I do think some people forget.... So when you take out the little nut that holds the anoid are you seeing the old anoid or some of this croision? Also worth cleaning before the boat goes back in is the pipe going from the back of the engine to the exhaust manifold. They can get blocked and should be an easy enough job to do. It will also give you access to the other side of the chamber the holds the anoid. It's nice having little projects the keep the mind active especially in these funny time, stay safe.
Hi Barolo, we use roughly 1.4ltr of Valvoline10w-40 oil..... Hope that helps.... The little 2001 does take surprisingly little oil. But keeping it clean and fresh is important. We would check levels a few times over the season as well just to be sure we're not using any.
