Polycystic Kidney Disease, the most common inherited kidney disease, has confounded doctors for years because there was/is no treatment for it. New research has revealed that there is something you can do to prevent or improve PKD at any stage. Typical doctor's advice for patients with polycystic kidney disease, including avoiding red meat, protein, caffeine, etc., are not backed by any research and don't help you at all. Everyone with PKD deserves to watch this video!

I live in Germany and I have PKD. Last monday I was in ADPKD Clinic in Cologne. I started working with Doctors there as a patient. I'm in keto 4 years. For example, last year my GFR was 68 (from blood) and last monday it was 75. For someone like me, where my Mother died from it, it is a big light in the tunnel.

I learned so much from Dr. Ken Berry, and appreciate his wisdom. The healthcare system is so skewed to poor food choices in America. Keto and Intermittent Fasting was NEVER discussed when my primary care physician diagnosed me with an A1C of 6.6 and tried to prescribe metformin. I did my research (thanks Ken) and a year ago went keto-fasting. Lost 65 pounds in 11 months, and 8 inches off my waist. Life is so much better. I am also off lovastatin altogether.

I've been on Keto for 6 years, plus intermittent fasting, but it didn't stop cysts from forming. I was just diagnosed with a 6cm cyst. It was discovered during an upper GI. (It's been a rough year). I eat clean and all of my functions are perfect, according to the Nephrologist. He's not planning to do anything with it.🤷🏻‍♀️

Agree! Living in the USA and having high blood pressure. Went to cardiologist who just increased my meds! No talk about weight, diet I should follow, nothing. As an European used to preventive medicine with doctors really being strict about weight and diet, usa doctors feel disconnected from their mission and just out to get money! Really sad!

You may have saved my life! Nearly 2 years ago, at 58 years old, my BP was 129/105. I was obese, coming home at the end of the day with swollen ankles, gout attacks, and I have APKD. I went to a nurse practitioner I knew who prescribed a diuretic and BP medication. I then started searching for how to beat this damage with a life style change, and found you, and others! I immediately cut out all vegetable oil and went full carnivore! I've lost around 75 pounds, BP is down to 112/65, my kidney function has improved, I'm off all medications except K Citrate. I have a higher HDL, and lower Triglycerides than I've ever had, and no gout attacks. My A1C is now 4.6! I generally fast 16 hours a day as well, and am in mild ketosis most of the day. They could have done this study on me! If my creatinine continues to drop, I may have anther ultrasound to compare my kidney size and cyst. Thank you! Thanks to all those getting the word out!

A year and a half ago I found Dr. Weimbs animal study at UCSB. My brother-in-law was diagnosed with PKD 10 years ago with no hope. I showed him this study and he was willing to change his diet to keto. I am a certified keto coach and I took the course by Dr Weimbs in using keto for people with PKD. One year later my brother-in-law had a scan of his kidneys and the results were astounding. His kidneys and cysts reduced in size 30%. His nephrologist told him he would never need dialysis. Brilliant! He also used the product that Dr. Weimbs formulated to keep the urine alkaline, Keto Citra, an exogenous ketone supplement. I too have been waiting to hear the results of the human study. This will change everything for people plagued with this challenging disease!! Thanks, Dr. Berry, for making a video on this. Revolutionary!! And thank you Dr. Weimbs and staff for this amazing study.

If simply low carb whole food diets were the standard, and all the garbage was recommended ONLY a an occasional treat the world would be infinitely better off.

I’ve been waiting for someone to post this info for a long time. I started the Keto diet after my mom became diabetic from her immunosuppressant medication after her kidney transplant. She has PKD as well as my two sisters and I. I found Dr. Thomas Weimbs study with mice on reversing PKD 2 years ago showing the ketone, beta-hydroxybutyrate, slowing, and reversing PKD. That’s when I started diving into HOW to get into ketosis. Back at Labor Day weekend this year I switched to carnivore as the soft keto diet wasn’t getting me into ketosis. I’m now in ketosis and check weekly with my keto-mojo device making sure both my glucose is down and my ketones are up! I’m so glad this video is out there now showing people you can DO something about it and not just sit there and wait for the kidneys to stop.

When I was diagnosed 11 years ago, I became the 3rd generation PKD patient in my family. I went on the DASH diet (only reason they recommend it is because PKD patients tend to have high blood pressure). I felt much better than I did when I was eating SAD, but I still had daily pain. I had no idea that the piles of spinach and sweet potatoes and almonds (all recommended as healthy options with DASH) were harming me. I read about the 2019 study in animals which prompted me to start Carnivore this past May and I've been keto/ketovore/carnivore-ish (whatever term you want to use) with some intermittent fasting ever since. I NO LONGER have daily kidney pain!!! 🙌😃👏 I truly never thought I could ever feel this good. I can't wait to see what my next scans look like! Thank you Dr. Berry for this video!!

Why sweet potatoes and spinach were harmful? Is it because of oxalate ?
@deppie9657
@deppie9657 8 месяцев назад
@samar3634 yes, oxalate. The same research team that did the animal study dr berry talks about is also studying oxalates. The PKD foundation podcast had an episode about the animal study and a preview into the oxalate research. My very basic understanding of what they are seeing is that oxalates are especially bad for someone with PKD and could even be what triggers cysts to form in the first place. It was very eye opening!

How about animal protein..isn't hard on the kidneys
@deppie9657
@deppie9657 5 месяцев назад
@alimehrez5319 no, that is actually a common misconception. For someone whose kidney disease is far enough along that the kidneys are failing and can't properly process the protein, then you are correct. But earlier stages when function is still good its not a concern. My kidney function has always been good, so I was able to SIGNIFICANTLY decrease the amount of kidney pain and kidney issues with low carb, low oxalate, high fat, high protein.

I can anecdotally confirm this. I have APKD. When my diet is keto my kidney numbers are in the normal range. The one time my nephrologist bullied me into following the “accepted” diet, my numbers deteriorated enough for him to float the drug jynarque, my BP went up, AND I weighed 183 lbs on a 5’3” frame. I quietly went back to my ketovore diet. Numbers are back in the normal range. BP is averaging 113/74. Weight is down 20 pounds. I rest my case.
@8bituser
@8bituser Месяц назад
I am also on jynarque. I am hoping to try this Keto diet to help with things. My GFR was 37 upon my last checkup. It has held there, but of course I want it to be higher. I also heard about another drug but I don't know much about it yet. My wife's brother sent info about it. It's called Wegovy, and alternate names. It is some kind of weight loss drug but seems to help with some CKD. I'm going to ask my nephrologist about it the next time I speak with him. If you message me I will let you know what he says and the possible prospects (or lack of) it may have...even though we take jynarque.
@suezeb
@suezeb Месяц назад
I declined the Jynarque after doing my research. The risks for me were unacceptable. In fact when my PCP asked me why I declined it I told her it seemed that livers are harder to find than kidneys (Jynarque is extremely damaging to livers), and eating Keto has arrested the progression of my APKD. I sincerely hope your nephrologist is closely monitoring your liver function.

I am glad you mentioed about the "dash diet" because it encouraged me to find out what is. If I ate that diet , I believe that I would have still high BP and gerd longer and that my weight would take longer to come down. It took me 2 weeks to get BP and gerd under control and get to ideal weight by 8 1/2 months using carnivore, keto and intermittent fasting. I dont think they did enough research and agree with you whole-heartedly!

Dr Berry!! 😮 I was just wondering about this very topic this morning. Back in June I had an MRI to look at my lower back due to continual pain. So just based on the fact that I have arthritis I've been trying to get on the carnivore train. But in the MRI, a cyst was seen on my left kidney about 2cm big. Was told that it wouldn't be the reason for any of my back pain. Ok cool... Just so happens that it's the same kidney I ruptured on the inside by falling off of a horse when I was 11. Now I'm 53...Ugh... I'm supposed to go back and get a sonogram on my kidney but I've been too afraid to honestly. . I was able to succeed at a week of the carnivore diet and was starting to feel better. Then my husband brought me donuts for my birthday.. just put me back in the tub of Epsom salt in pain.. so... imma have to get back on the train. Thank you for posting this info on the cystic kidney. I'm hoping that by the time I decide to get back for a sonogram that the cyst will be gone. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Thank you for doing this video! Much appreciated. I was diagnosed with PDK when I was 21 (just turned 40 Saturday!) I have been on a ketogenic / ketovore diet since January and have been able to cut my blood pressure medicine by 75%. I am also going to the doctor for new bloodwork tomorrow. I'm hoping to see that my GFR numbers has climbed a little. They have been declining for the last 3 years in a row. I have also been following in Dr. Weimbs research since it first began on the mice trials. Thank you for bringing information and awareness to this topic!

wow - a guy who works in our neighborhood has this - I wrote down "Ken Berry RU-vid" for him and told him how to look up your other kidney videos. I haven't seen him since, but when I see him I'll be sure to get him to check out this one, too. I told him about keto and carnivore - but also that I'm not a doctor etc. - but he should investigate this.

I am already on dialysis. However, I am still urinating. By eating keto I believe it is extending my urination. Whereas, I go on vacation and skip dialysis for a week because I am still urinating. I will try to improve it even more. Thanks Doctor.

I have a thought. Nutritional ketosis range will only slow development.. to achieve reduction requires the kind of ketone range you get from a 14 day fast

i was diagnosed with pkd by accident (scans for bulging disks showed it) (ima lucky random mutation, no history in the family) and my kidney numbers were always fine. then like 7-8 months ago my egfr dropped from over 100 to 89. i was pushing 300 lbs. drs said all i could hope for was to slow losing function never gain function back. 2 months after that appointment i heard about carnivore got started and after the first few weeks i started doing one meal a day at least 5 days a week, so 20-26 hour fasting. June 22. i went back to the drs in september, had lost over 50 lbs, and my egfr was 94. as of this morning i have lost 79 lbs, i go back in March, we will see what it is after 9 months carnivore and hopefully at an ideal weight. even if my kidney function hadnt improved, quality of life and just general body aches and sleep have improved significantly and that alone would be worth it
