Working with foils and translucent clays can give some incredible results. In this video I show you two simple ways this can be achieved. Note: when you shave those thin slices off the stack, try turning them over and using them that way - you'll create a completely different look. I forgot to mention that in the video!!

what a great idea , never thought of layering the clay, gives such a beautiful effect & I absolutely love the jelly roll🥰. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas in a quick & easy manner.. I can't seem to find your video on Kato clay being used as a sealant. Could you send me a link if possible? Thanks so much

so many amazing things you can create with foils and clay, I'm surprised I don't see it more in the polymer world actually. Thanks so much. Oh and the liquid clay tutorial is actually a paid one on my website. www.debbiecrothers.com/ if you check the shop section you'll find all the tutorials here. I also have lots of free tutorials on my website too and also many more on the blog which you'll find on my website too yay!! thanks heaps Ann Marie xx

Wonderful videos, I enjoy watching your process. I appreciate your talent, and love that you share the oopsies and not perfects as well as the successes. These transfer foil videos were done awhile back so you probably discovered this trick already, but if not...a heat safe glue like Poly Bonder works nicely. I’ve had great success using that glue, but it’s a teeny tiny bottle and expensive when used that way... (in all fairness it’s very reasonable if used for what it’s actually intended). The other way is to burnish with heat, as in your liquid clay method. ** I first tried heating a metal object with a heat gun: roller, tamper, disc; then burnish. Keep heating and burnishing til done. It works, but it’s tricky: if the metal is too hot it can ruin the foil. I also have to be very careful and mindful to not burn my fingers. **second: heat the foil on the clay directly, then burnish, going back and forth from heat to burnishing quickly. This works too, but I have to be careful not to heat it too much and cure the clay. I gave up and shoved all the “difficult” foils to the back of the drawer. ***Then just last week I discovered a safe, easy and almost foolproof way to burnish with heat: an electric stencil cutter!*** I was using the cutter on a stencil, and thought 🤔 hmmmm 💡 I popped on a flat oval shaped tip and tried it out. After trying different temps I found a middle setting that worked perfectly 😊 it glides over the foil with just enough heat and pressure to get a perfect transfer. No glue, no working up a sweat, no cramped fingers. 😁 Hope this helps!

Hey Jen, I'm so sorry I thought I had responded to your message but it looks like I didn't. Thanks so much for all your suggestions and thoughts on using foils. They are such incredible things to use and can be used in so many different ways as you've pointed out here as well. Thanks for getting in touch and sharing with us. The electric stencil cutter sounds awesome!!

When your clay is this sticky, you can put it in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes after you have rolled it out. It helps to put it in with a tile so it will stay cool while you work out the colors and foils. I have a hard time stopping a piece once I get started but this method is really important to make it easy to remove bubbles or not leave marks from the blade as you raise it from the work surface with a sawing motion. This message isn't for the woman in this video really, it is for anyone new to polymer clay. Helpful hints are what makes or breaks an artist and/or teacher.

thanks so much for your coments here CM CM. I actually like the fact my clay is sticky because it helps the layers stick together. The foil actually works as a barrier between layers of clay so the sticky clay is helpful in this instance. I did explain that but perhaps could have elaborated for those who don't work with foils much. I should also have mentioned I'm not a perfectionist with this particular process (ie bubbles or sawing action) as the stack is going to get manipulated and then sliced anyway so for me, it really doesn't make much difference. I can see how this would make a big impact on a different piece. Thanks again for your thoughts

@debbiecrothers1 2 года назад
Hey Glenis, great to hear from you. Okay let me ask you have loose foils meaning "leafing". The foils I work with in these videos are actually mylar paper with a metallic colour attached to the underside so the paper must be removed leaving the "metallic foils" attached to the clay. I'm assuming the product you have is one that just sticks onto the clay by itself. They really are two different products but I'm seeing the leafing referred to as foils more and more these days - it can be quite confusing if you don't know there are different products on the market. You should be able to purchase Lisa Pavelka Foils and Kato liquid clay online at any reputable clay supplier. Thanks for your lovely message too Glenis. Have a lovely day. xx

What would they look like on a white or translucent bead base?
@debbiecrothers1
@debbiecrothers1 Год назад
good question! You know I can't for the life of me remember if I did this on a white or trans base. The black really makes the foils pop and is my preference but give it a try - it could be very awesome!
