Comparison of the most popular Polymer Clay Brands: Cernit | Kato Polyclay | FIMO Professional | FIMO Soft | Sculpey Premo | Sculpey Souffle | Sculpey III
Polymer Clay Brands Comparison | Polymer Clay Types
In this video I go over 7 of some of the most popular types of polymer clay and discuss their properties so that you can make a better informed choice in terms of which polymer clay brand is best for you to purchase. Some clays are better designed for specific clay techniques like canning while others are better suited for individual preferences. For instance, those with arthritic hands may want softer clays, or jewelry makers may want firmer clays that bake with a professional sheen or those with really hot hands may want a clay that is harder and won't get too sticky.
Jennifoo's List of Recommended Tools:

Breakdown of the Polymer Clay Types:
Cernit
All purpose clay that creates a luminous, porcelain-like finish. One of the best translucent clays that doesn't get too sticky. Cernit Applications/Uses: Favored among doll-makers. Hand-sculpted pieces with lots of color blending (translucency & softness increases ability to color blend). Jewelry & Faux Stones. In surface treatments: paints, silk screening, alcohol inks, chalks, powders, and varnish. Cernit Metallic & Shiny are great for mica shift technique.
Sculpey III
Nice soft clay for beginners to make simple sculptures or figures and for softening harder clays. Don't use if complexity & durability is a requirement. Sculpey III Applications/Uses: Viable alternative to firmer clays. Great for projects with density and bulk. Simple sculptures or figures. Adding to color blends. Mix in with harder clays to make them more pliable.
Sculpey Premo
Great medium-firm all purpose clay for beginners. Favored among jewelry makers with its durability, ability to retain detail & slight sheen when baked. Sculpey Premo Applications/Uses: Jewelry Making. Faux Stones, Cartoon Figurines, Home Décor (vase & cutlery decoration), Sculptures, & Detailed Pieces. Most clay techniques (including surface techniques). All-purpose polymer clay & very versatile. Easy starter clay for beginners.
Sculpey Souffle
Great soft and stretchy clay that bakes with strength & durability for lightweight applications. Easy on anthric hands. Sculpey Souffle Applications/Uses: Lightweight Applications. High quality clay that's easy on arthritic hands. Jewelry Making & Knitting Techniques (it also takes paint very well). Chunky Figurines (too soft for detailed sculpting). Mokume Gane Technique because it slices easy with little distortion.
FIMO Professional (rebranded from FIMO Classic)
Firm, all-around clay for both beginners & professionals. Works in mildly cold/warm climates & trying out nearly all clay techniques. FIMO Applications/Uses: Great versatile clay for beginners to test out all clay techniques before investing in specialized clays. Professional quality clay for artist. Works in both warm & cold climates (however if overworked, can get sticky). Jewelry, Faux Stones, Canning, Stamping, Cartoon Figurines, Home Décor, Sculpting. Creating thin layers without tearing.
FIMO Soft
Alternative to firmer clays, that holds it shape well & conditions quickly. All-purpose clay for beginners/amateur artist at the hobby level. FIMO Soft Applications/Uses: Embellishments, Cartoon Figurines, Home Décor & Beads. Excellent for use with rubber stamps because it holds its shape well. Superior shelf life for cannings (canes made from softer clays are easier to recondition) All-purpose soft polymer clay.
Kato Polyclay
Firm, all-purpose & professional quality clay for those with warm hands. Works exceptionally well for canning, faux stones, fine details & crisp lines.
Kato Applications/Uses: Works well in hot climates. Best clay for canning as it resists color blending. Precise Faux Stones & Beads with accurate color. Fine Detail Work including Strong Detailed Sculptures. Thin layers without tearing. All purpose clay for all clay techniques (with some exceptions).

I appreciate the video but i'm still not sure which one I should choose. I make figurines. I'm looking for something easy to work with because my hands are pretty weak, I don't want it to harden easily in room temperature, because i sure do take my time working with my crafts, but I still want it to hold detail. Somebody give me advice

I'm about to try polymer clay for the first time, but I don't know how durable my project (not jewelry and mostly inside/in a purse or backpack) needs to be.

What are you opinions for the hobby lobby and Michael's brands. And for me kato was to hard to work with at all
@Jennifooclay

Hi Liz! You might be like me, I have a hard time with stiff clay. Kato is stiff, but after you condition it through a pasta machine, it stays together well and its almost anti-stick attributes is a plus. Fimo Pro has always been the most difficult because it takes forever to condition even with a pasta machine because it can get very crumbly. Always look at the clay before your buy, as very old clay can be crumbly too (avoid the ones with cracks in them). I once did online pickup, and they gave me old Sculpey Premo clay and it was so crumbly! Even though I know Sculpey Premo should be easy to condition. I had to return them and go back and pick out new clay from the shelf. After experimenting here and there, Sculpey Premo is my go to clay. I keep some Kato on hand to mix into Sculpey Premo if for whatever reason I want to firm up the consistency when caning. Sculpey Premo is easy to condition, but great for professional work like jewelry making (durable, good finish & so many colors to choose from). Sculpey Souffle is another favorite, it's more foam-like and bakes lighter. As with most clayers, i'd avoid Sculpey III if you want durability. But Sculpey III is useful to mix into stiff clay to make stiff clay softer. Hope this helps!

I'm going to have to mix with translucent since it is crumbs and clay to soft. So my canes get mushy
@Jennifooclay
@Jennifooclay Год назад
Oi crumbly and mushy clay is not fun. I notice that some stores have very old clay which is why it crumbles so I sometimes mix in newer clay. I am very picky about picking clay lol. Stare at the packaging, and make sure it looks new with minimal cracks and discoloration ect. Hope that helps and best of luck to you!!

Which Clay is it? Imo Fimo pro is a clear winner in this vid (I’ve never used a decent clay), just wondering.

Hi, do you know which brands are vegan and which are phthalate-free? I find very difficult to find this information online. Thanks a lot.
@Jennifooclay
@Jennifooclay 3 года назад
That's an interesting question and i'll have to look into that. And if I find something, i'll be sure to let you know. Thanks for asking :-)
@Jennifooclay
@Jennifooclay 3 года назад
After looking into things, I see why the information is difficult to find due how certain clay brands would be vegan at first then change later. I did try contacting several manufactures, and so far found that Kato to get the most consistent responses (according to shadesofclay & polymerclaysuperstore).
