Please enjoy the first title in this epic Sword and Sorcery series.
Blurb:
Finding out you are a wizard…
…is only half the story.
Alrion answers the call with a mixture of fear and excitement. Finally, a chance to prove himself and discover his true purpose. But his potential was kept a secret his entire life.
What else were they hiding?
Tales of the Blight hint at darkness and danger. A mysterious force that sounds like it’s from a fairy tale. As he travels Alrion starts to understand the truth. His power is unique, and the spread of the Blight and his emergence as a wizard are not a coincidence.
Many trials and an impossible quest lay ahead of Alrion. Can he rise above his lack of training and overcome the twisted creatures of the Blight? Or will he falter and suffer a fate worse than death?
Written by: Vaughan W. Smith
Narrated by: Ulf Bjorklund

Just listened to the whole book yesterday at work, both for my own enjoyment and some light research into the "noblebright" sub-genre. First the good: I liked the narrator and think he did a great job adding a certain medieval feel to everything. I liked the presence of sincere (rather than snarky) characters throughout, who actually cared about and didn't make light of things. I also very much appreciated the strong male mentor figures, who truly helped turn our young bright-eyed protagonist into a more wise and strong hero by the end. I also liked the simple presentation of a world where men and women are not squabbling over gender roles, but have simply found their respective places of influence and get on with civilization. I also enjoyed seeing the boy's loving father go with him, on his quest. Though for some reason I can't remember if he left or got killed off. I also liked the idea of the boy's own grandfather being the one who saved everyone, and somehow passing his abilities down through the generations. Now for the constructive criticisms: I personally did not find there to be much rising action, and I kept waiting for the twist or for something to go horribly wrong that would put our characters in ongoing danger. What I got instead was essentially a string of scenes where they have to fight different types and numbers of fantasy enemies, and everything basically drops back to business as usual afterwards. I wanted more tension both between characters we meet and the world around them, but instead, it all feels like a pretty low-key fantasy journey up until the part on the boat. There were also a lot of scenes that were essentially info dumps about the magic system, which I wouldn't have minded if the magic didn't feel like a lighter and much easier version of Wheel of Time's "One Power." I was also surprised to see the book end so abruptly like that. Yes, there are more books after this, available for free (Thank you!), but I would've liked to see a stronger ending than that to draw us further in. I do suspect with (spoilers) the wise mentor now put of the picture, that there will be more tension in book 2. We'll see.

@@VaughanWSmith-mc5tx I am wanting to write a successful book. Successful in means of reaching people around the World leaving them with similar emotions I myself feel after finishing a great book. I just finished Red Wolf Shifter Unbound series book and as always I feel emotionally odd as I am back here no longer in the World of the characters. I always feel this way afterwards (after reading/listening to an emotionally great book). I of course enjoy Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresdren files as always as many others some others being the Alpha Omega, Hollows, Iron Druid sereies, Mercy Thompson series, ..I could go on but I do believe you got an idea of what a few favorites of mine are. I write and though my imagination works just fine I am over whelmed thinking about how truly great many are with their details as well as that connection that is made between the story and reader. Details I am currently lacking. I have confidence I will be better but where do I go from here after reading/listening so, so many amazing books. I do hope you will excuse me for my lazing typing in this comment as well my lengthy rant. I just want to ask for any advice you may be willing to offer a novice like myself. I want to follow my heart by creating something I myself would enjoy but there are so many moments in my life where I have had hardships with relationships (friends, family and etc) so I am worried about how to fully create characters and a World that is somewhat relatable. Not having a steady friendship or anything I worry my details may be missing in the sense of what I enjoy the most among the adventure from the incredible books I hold near and dear to my heart. Regardless of whether or not you read all of that mess of thoughts above I want to sincerely give my gratitude for giving us all beautiful escape for our imaginations! Thanx!!!! Joyous blessings!!! ☯️

Greg, thanks for the thoughtful comment. It sounds like you've already got a good idea of what you want to write, so you should start. Write what's important to you, and it will come through in the story. Don't let comparisons to things you've enjoyed derail your efforts. Everyone has to start somewhere. A completed story is a true milestone, and you'll find your voice and develop your skill on the way. I'm glad you enjoyed the story, so please use that feeling to push on with your own.

@@VaughanWSmith-mc5tx Your reply means a great deal to me so thank you! I shall use the good feeling and push through with a story of my own. Another interest of mine which is guitar teaches me a lot such as persevering and most of all focus on my own enjoyment. As long as I am enjoying something that is good in my opinion then I am in the right direction. .. Mainly from Steve Vai! His spirituality is just as rich as his playing is!! I hate to be bothersome but if possible may I just ask what are some of your most powerful influences (books, life it’s self etc. and so forth anything that is truly meaningful as well as important/vital to your profession level of writing)? I am interested in what book you may read that first made you think you could or should write something with such enjoyment. However I will squash my pondering mind wondering a bit too close to your personal space ‘n’ patience. Again thank you for taking the time to help me feel good about using the good feeling with go forward with my story. I am currently starting a journey with my imagination. Thank you so much for this! I really enjoy the story as well as the narration. I haven't finished it yet but so far it has definitely kept my interest, it feels like I am in an adventure along side the protagonist. There is just one thing i wanted to point out: I found the repetition of ' Vincent said, he said, this that said' very mechanic and rather annoying after a while. If some of these were replaced with different words to create more diversity, it would immediately take the book to another level. This is just my small way to create feedback for the author. I tried to be as specific as I can so that it can be helpful and not just negative, because honestly I find this book really enjoyable! Shout out to the narrator as well for giving so much life to the characters. I am very picky when it comes to the voice but this narrator did an awesome job. I hope we will hear (and read) many more books from you in the future. Greetings from Croatia 💙

I agree with this comment. "And for those 'different words' go for variation on both the verb and the subject, and also alternate placing this before and after the thing that was said. Thirdly, add a bit of further description sometimes for a longer form", uttered the nosy critic, hoping to be constructive.

Hey I hear you - that's pretty frustrating. I had a look at the settings and RU-vid had automatically put lots of ads up the front of the book. I guess they are trying to maximise the ad visibility for the video. I manually went in and removed a lot, making sure they fell at the chapter breaks. I'll have to steadily work my way through the videos this way, but it will be a lot more organic from here on. Thanks for letting me know.

Haha yes, I totally understand. It's funny, this is the opposite effect of them in the written version. I find that using too many alternatives for said in the prose stands out too much and catches your attention, but the consistency of said generally blends into the background. But in the audio, it's the opposite because you keep hearing it! Lesson learned for future books when considering how they will sound when read aloud.

I hear you Christi. But you'll be pleased to know that wizards are not the only force of magic in this world. Later books explore that :)

Hi Betsie, I'd definitely consider it family friendly, but more for older kids. Say over 12?

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I was a little slow looking under the hood but it seems as though RU-vid added way too many at the start of the book. I'm slowly working through and updating the ad breaks to be more natural.

Um. I'm not joining the choir and singing praises along with all the fans. You have a good baseline here, but I found the story and its telling somewhat of a uniform thickness, if that makes any sense. If I were you, I would experiment with alternating pace, intensity and rhythm more. In practise that would mean things like stretching out some descriptive episodes (such as scenery, leisurely activity or the mood of a scene or a character) as build-up for more fast-paced scenes (such as action or even an internal realization of something) which use shorter sentences and more drama. And then cool down from the more fast-paced bits by letting the characters process what just happened and grow from it. Think of your writing as a river: When it's consistently wide and evenly flowing, the strongest currents can be almost invisible, and watching it can get boring after a while. When it's a mountain stream that plunges more down than forward, it can be tiring and too hectic to take in properly. It's better to alternate between these and many other modes of flow. I'll be interested to see if you've already stumbled upon this principle in your more recent work.

Agreed - took me some time to understand how RU-vid was doing the ads and it's a bit too frequent and stacked at the front of the video. I am slowly working through to spread them out for a better experience.

I found it quite hard to listen to. There is no difference in tone on the narrators side, but a bigger problem is that there is no difference in speech patterns between the characters. It is like listening to the same person talking to themselves. There is no sense of any difference in relationships between any of the characters. The descriptions of places and objects are non-existent. The only tunings described are the things that characters interact with directly. It's like watching a movie where there is only a white screen, all the characters are stick men that talk to each other in the same voice and the soundtrack is one note repeating over and over and over. I managed 2.5 hours, but the story did not become interesting enough to justify listening any further. I am not saying that the plot is bad. I am saying that everything else is bad enough to put me off the plot.

@@VaughanWSmith-mc5tx I'm not saying their feedback isn't one to consider, but I disagree. I believe the narrator did a pretty good job at changing speech for different characters. I had complete images of not only the characters, but of each place they went to inside my mind thanks to your descriptions and how the narrator read it out.

Sounds like you'll be a good story. I don't like it narrated. I would rather have the people actually talking instead of a neurator. Thank you

How does anyone pay money to people with unpleasant voices to read audiobooks, what a stupid trend is this? This voice gives me a headache.
