As a person who is friends with someone with severe vitiligo, people shouldn’t be fetishizing or using vitiligo as a trend. It’s a skin condition that makes most people feel horrible about themselves and get bullied or treated differently almost always. And as for Hei, you shouldn’t criticize them for not knowing what vitiligo is. Many people don’t know what it is much less the name, sure it’s probably expected to know what it is, but it isn’t ignorant or rude to not know. Anyways if you want to make a a character have vitiligo or change their skin tone just make an oc. It’s not that difficult, it’s respectful, and it doesn’t cross boundaries.

It's ok if people make OCs of Black characters or characters with vitiligo, or projecting themselves onto existing characters. What's NOT ok is plagiarizing someone's work and call it yours and claim that you're doing representation (taking a character, claiming the art is yours, and calling it representation is really lazy.)

Vitiligo is a medical condition that that causes lighter patches on skin. It exists though it's rare enough you might not ever see it. "Race fixing" artists like to do it sometimes. It's also popular to do for fan art of characters without a particular physical or racial description like dnd podcasts.

Personally I don’t care if someone edits a character to have darker or lighter skin, I only care if you say something shitty like “I fixed it!” Edit: I want to be clear that I mean changing a character’s skin tone in your OWN art. Editing art, especially without the artist’s permission, is extremely rude and disrespectful.

I don’t really understand the point of changing characters skin tones even though they’re for the most part, POC so there’s representation in some cases. Its perfectly fine wanting more black or dark skin characters but I don’t really see the point of changing a characters skin tone that isn’t black and isn’t white or just in general. You can always make yourself as a character or create other characters to add to the series (I do both). The only circumstance in which I see it working is if the artist originally planned for the character to be black and there was a mistranslation but other than that, I don’t get it. Edit: this might be me reaching but making non black characters “look black” in a sense, kinda puts them in black face..because they’re not actually black and all you’re doing is changing the skin tone (pertaining to the Twitter account that was doing it.)

I don't agree with stealing art. But I think it's perfectly fine to draw any character you want as a different race. You can draw white characters as black, black characters as white, etc. Nobody should be able to control what you draw. If you want to draw something, then draw it. Just don't steal people's art.

The thing they did to Venti was a skin condition. There's a condition where skin changes pigmentation, much like how Albinism essentially nullifies all but the whitest of white shades, the condition turns white cells black and black cells white. It doesn't go 100%, I think, but people do end up looking very patchwork with their skin, with blotches of the opposite skin tone all over. I dunno if it's racist to draw that as an edit, but it probably cheapens the misery of those with the condition. (It can cause a few problems in their lives)

I think this person made Venti have vitiligo which is a skin disease that cause loss of skin pigment in people with higher amounts of melanin. Often seen in splotches on the skin. It happened to Micheal Jackson, and for some reason, I think this strange individual made Venti have it, when Venti wasn't even black or had any kind of skin pigment in the first place. I don't think a person with vitiligo would honestly give one if some white teenager on twitter made an anime gacha game boy have their skin condition.

I vaguely recall some politician or celebrity getting in trouble for doing black face for a costume party some years ago, I also seem to remember a female cosplayer getting attacked because she made a very convincing cosplay of a male character which was of a dark skin tone (it was so good I didn’t even realize that it wasn’t really a guy) cause she was doing black face. Yet this guy steals art, edits it, demands credit, and says it’s cool cause he’s a black kid. By that logic as an Asian, I should be allowed to go around and turn any black character I like into an Asian variant.
