Poorly Engineered New Holland Mower Conditioner Gearbox Repair

In this video I took on the complex job of trying to fix a gearbox design a customer has had multiple failures with. This 4 gear set 3 shaft bevel gearbox has a clear weakness involving the support design of the lower bearing and pinion. Rather than try to weld back in the next to nothing piece of cast that keeps breaking I decided to alter the box to take as big of a slug of steel as I could fit to try to maximize the strength and minimize the likely hood of me seeing this job again. Because of all the various angles intersections and fits plus the tight tolerances of multiple bearing fits and having to achieve proper gear lash and mesh on all the gear sets this was a very complicated and time consuming job. I hope you enjoy following along on the redesign and getting to see the simultaneous axis milling to produce the 45deg clearance on my part something I don't think I have ever seen another you tuber do. :-) Also probably not a lot of good footage of drill bits exploding either but you get some of that as a bonus!! Be careful out there but enjoy the shop and keep watching and tell your friends to watch too! Thanks!
Brian and Baily.

It's always bad when a repair has to be better than new because of a design flaw. When I saw the bearing, my first thought was that it's awful small compared to the gear it supports.

Really a shame that gearbox isn't built any more robust than that. Hopefully the repair will hold up, but if it does, the customer will want you to fix all of them. Bailey must still be working from home, social distancing and all. As I typed that, you explained where Bailey was at the end of the video.

That is the bean counter mentality, and in the long run will put a company out of business. The bean counters don’t care about longevity of a company as they are only interested in the short term profit and will just move on to the next company to take down.

@infoanorexic
@infoanorexic 4 года назад
I agree, a lot of those engineers have their nose too high in the air, when they are not looking down it at you. THEY have that Degree, and are quite offended if you disregard that. If it isn't them, it's the bean counters that insist that you pare down so it can be made cheaper.
@Ropetangler
@Ropetangler 4 года назад
@@infoanorexic Or management decides to get rid of the older experienced blokes because they have to pay them more, and they replace them with new graduates who as yet have little experience. Just because you can connect two points with a line in AutoCad, doesn't make it a sound design. You don't learn experience from a text, that takes time and some of the best learning comes from some of the biggest stuff ups.

Wow, first! Brian, you did not show the cover piece that goes on the front as we look at it, would it have helped to run some dowels parallel to your new bolts that run all the way to the front cover to help support your new insert? Not sure what mower that is off of, we ran two NH411's over tens of thousand of acres and never had a box failure. On another note, I see a few bigger machine shops in the Cincy area are auctioning off, lots of high dollar stuff probably going to be selling for pennies on the dollar, any goodies you have on your wish list?
