personally, harry potter was a type of book that needed to stay the same...it was based off of 7; 7 years at hogwarts, 7 parts of voldemort’s soul; the “magic 7” (the actors), the 7 weasleys, it was all based off of 7 and their was no reason for the 8th book it was really just a money grab.

I also love the series, but I'm kinda annoyed that SPOILER no one important for Aelin died in the final book. It feels like Manon is the main character in the end because she lost the Thirteen (I cried sooo much!) and Gavriel's death just didn't do it for me. I think Sarah J Maas should've killed Fenrys off (he isn't in a relationship so that wouldn't have a HUGE effect but it would still hurt Aelin deeply) not because I don't like him but because I think it would work out well
@lunarmusic2455
@lunarmusic2455 2 года назад
@@kage3069 Spoilers I totally understand why you think that, and I finished the series not too long again, but Aelin had lost so many people throughout her journey in the book series, but the one thing she didn’t lose was who she was and the scars that had shown all she’s been through. In Kingdom of Ash she doesn’t lose anyone important other than herself basically. She lost her scars and everything she was, and was prepared to die for them all. She also lost her magic (mostly) right after she finally started liking herself with it and it itself. The other characters had experienced loss before, sure, but not to the heartbreaking degree that Aelin had, with a few exceptions. I think Kingdom of Ash showed other characters finally understanding the torment Aelin had went through her whole life. Also, Fenrys dying, I think, would have been too far because he was the only way Aelin could comprehend the horrors she had faced in Maeve’s grasp. It just wouldn’t have been fair to do that to the characters. Thank you, sorry it is so long I just finished reading the series and I have a lot of pent up opinions about it!

**Spoilers!** I didn’t like how at the end of the series, the other characters and couples sorta got shoved to the side and Aelin and Rowan took the absolute spotlight for their happy ever after. I totally get that they deserve more pages then the other characters but I wanted them to at least have a couple pages to see them finally being happy and settled (Chaol and Yrene’s child being born, Lorcan and Elide going to their home, Lysandra and Aedion going to their new home..) and I feel that some things were not resolved. Like what happened to Dorian and his family? The glass castle is gone, adarlan was in ruins.. And Nox! He didn’t even meet Aelin again. I was disappointed as I felt like so many details were left unresolved that it didn’t feel like a proper ending for anyone else but Aelin. Besides that I still LOVED the series lol.

i actually really liked the worldbuilding in the miss peregrine’s series. but dear god, the main couple. the first book sets it up so that it looks like a deconstruction of the typical YA romance since emma used to be in love with jacob’s grandfather and it’s implied she’s afraid of using jacob as a replacement for him, and then they just.... ignore all of that and get together in the next book anyway. coooool. but if you can stomach that, i’d still recommend it for the setting alone

I've never read anything by Sarah J, Maas, but people always tell me to read them because they're feminist. And when I ask people how they're feminist, everyone just says that it has badass female characters. And I mean, this whole badass female character thing isn't feminism, because it's all about making women strong in a very masculine, patriarchal idea of strength. So having "badass female characters" isn't enough to truly make a book feminist
@claudiac5331
@claudiac5331 6 лет назад
AceOfBooks I wouldn’t categorise ToG as feminist but ACOTAR is in my opinion, don’t know if you’ve read it but the relationships in it are totally different from ToG. And I feel like ACOTAR is so much better than ToG in so many aspects, though some people say that there are way too many sex scenes but i didn’t really mind it in the books because overall they’re very good. The relationship between Feyre and Rhysand is so different from those in ToG.
@aceofbooks7242
@aceofbooks7242 6 лет назад
I haven't read ACOTAR but some of the reviews I've seen of it say that there are problematic relationships, and like sexual assault and stuff like that. I'm interested to hear your perspective. What makes them feminist?
@claudiac5331
@claudiac5331 6 лет назад
AceOfBooks I want to explain it to you but I feel like I might spoil the book for you so I’ll don’t get too much into details. It’s true that there is one problematic relationship but it’s not going to stay that way, so Feyre (the main character) got out of that toxic relationship and went into a really healthy relationship with someone who truly loved her and not only wanted to possess her. As why it is feminist, first Feyre really evolved throughout the books she stands ups for herself and she doesn’t rely on a man nor does she lets someone take decisions for her and that’s really something I like and appreciated about this book and I thought that was something to highlight, and yes she was in that problematic relationship but then she got with someone who truly respected her and treated her as an equal, never belittled her and always respected her choices, I really think that their relationship is beautiful. And there are some parts of the books that I especially like that truly represent that. The main reason why I think this book is feminist is her relationship with Rhysand. Of course this is only my opinion and I hope you’ll give acotar a try because it a book I truly enjoyed reading. As someone who is used to seeing possessive and downright obsessive man characters in books, acotar was really a breath of fresh air for me and made me realise that the way relationships were portrayed in certain books that I’ve read were just wrong and not romantic at all as it is portrayed to be. There’s so much more about he characters and their relationships with one another so I’ll just let you discover it.
@aceofbooks7242
@aceofbooks7242 6 лет назад
See, I'm not trying to argue because I haven't read the book, but I've seen multiple reviews where people explicitly say that Rhysand physically hurts Feyre in the first book. I also hesitate to call a book feminist just because the main character is your typical "badass chick" who stands up for herself and doesn't need a man. That's not feminism, that individualistic bullshit. Feminism is about standing up for other women (and other marginalised groups) and taking action against unjust expectations, laws, norms etc (basically smashing the patriarchy). Too often I hear "she stands up for herself and makes her own decisions, therefore feminism" you're setting the bar waaaay too low.
@claudiac5331
@claudiac5331 6 лет назад
AceOfBooks Maybe I’m setting the bar too low and I’m actually trying to work on that so if you have any feminist books recommendation then I’m open to anything. But this is what I received and felt from that book, and maybe I categorised it wrongly by calling it feminist, but I’m saying it again and you’re probably getting tired of me repeating it again 😅 but i really appreciated the relationship between Rhysand and Feyre in the way that they are equal as persons and neither of the two is overpowering or controlling the other and that’s why I said the book is feminist even though that now after looking back at it I shouldn’t have categorised it as feminist. Besides that, there are positive and negatives reviews about every book and it’s normal though I really don’t recall Rhysand abusing Feyre in any way maybe you confused him with Tamlin. I really think that you should try to read the book and form your opinion about it instead of basing it on reviews because everyone’s opinion is different. And if after reading it you still don’t like it then I’ll respect your opinion not everyone can like the book, I just recommended it for all the things I’ve said before and because it’s a really nice book that I think is worth the “hype”.

Honestly I haven’t read Me Before You but I loved the movie and wanna read the book. I liked the message because it is very realistic. When someone is paralyzed and loses everything that was important to them, it’s natural they will fall into depression. He dedicated his life to sports and the suddenly everything he dedicated his life to was over. It’s completely understandable that he would want to end his life. If I had that happen to me I would make the same decision tbh. I liked the dynamic of her trying to show him the the value of life and that life was bigger than his disability and I liked that it didn’t have an expected ending. It didn’t end the way I thought it would and I liked that it wasn’t super predictable. That’s just my opinion on it.

It's been awhile since I have read the book and watched the movie but I loved the book, not quite the movie. I agree that the message is not for everyone, the topic euthanasia has always been controversial. With that being said, I loved how the book was able to depict and provide different point of view of the topic and one that is generally considered problematic. In terms of Will's choice at the end, many of the characters in book did in fact disapproved it, but I love how the book was able to show that at the end of the day, it is Will's choice and he was able to make that choice on his own. I don't know, personally I like how the book tackled a problematic issue, providing different view point of the issue. I would say, this is a book that people should go in open minded, but at the end of the day, it is a topic that have a very divided opinions therefore the book may likely not click with everyone.

Yes, I honestly think it is more controversial to keep someone who is in inmese pain alive in your book because if not then it's "ableist". No, people who are disabled can achieve amazing things if they have the opportunity but some of them literally want to just end it and they can't. That's what I like about the movie (I stopped reading the book halfway because the writing didn't work for me at all).

I kinda agree with both opinions. Like I interpreted it as him wanting to die not because of his disability but because he couldn’t cope with the strong change that came with it. Anna Zenelaj I don’t even have to read it to know it’s awful. It completely disregards a lot of things about the original books one big thing being that the entire thing is impossible because time travel in Harry Potter was already established in the third book as being that you could never really change anything because it already happened. And while that does have plot holes of its own it’s a completely different type as in the cursed child and before you say it no just because it’s a different type of time turner doesn’t mean that it’s ok

I kind of disagree, bc a lot of characters have toxic traits but are still rather likeable, and have at least some redeeming qualities. I wouldn't say Jacob was just a toxic character all around. He was flawed like anyone else and came off as pushy sometimes- but he was a kid who was trying to steer Bella away from the Cullens, thinking that would keep her "safe." I think he had decent intentions, (despite being overly persistent in pursuing her in New Moon.) Unless there's something I'm completely missing? Idk, I haven't read the series in quite some time so feel free to correct me.

Sadly, people responsible for potter wiki consider CC canon. I didn't read it and probably never will, because from what I heard about it it sounds like a really bad fanfic. And I generally don't like ff anyway. But if I wanted some I could find better for free without the excuse that it's meant to be seen not read as a book. Will Just, did the time travellers get older by how far into the past they went? Because that's what JK said happens in an article for pottermore. Though she'd probably try to weasel out of it by saying they used something else than time turners to travel.

A Clockwork Reader A lot of people are forgetting that this is meant to be a play for theatre. Reading this, I thought it was progressing really fast and unrealistically, and that gives it a this fanfiction-y feel. But this is meant to be played on a stage, and then it makes a lot more sense. A theatre play has to progress a lot faster, the dialogue won't sound as awkward anymore and even the jokes will fit better.. You can't review it the same way you would any other book, it's not really meant to be read. I didn't enjoy reading this and don't really consider it the "eighth book" of the series either, but I can imagine that it would work a lot better when actually played by stage actors.

Well Meyer left out stuff which is why publishing professionals said her editors should have been fired. In the Twilight guide, she goes into more detail on imprinting, when the wolf imprints on someone who is an infant the love they have for them is like a brother. When they are ages 5-17 that brotherly love is best friends. Once the imprint is of consenting age their friendship turns to love. Renesmee is half human and has the same chromosome make up as Jake. They imprint to make stronger wolves. Jake and Nessie's children will be vampire-wolf hybirds and be very powerful for the pack.

The only thing I'll say in defense of Cursed Child is that I had the real privilege of seeing it live last year with the original cast (I hadn't read it before), and those actors really made the lines work. Scorpius was hands down incredible, and he had some iffy lines to work with. What would have been "eh" if I just read it worked with him acting it. Also, the visuals are stunning. But then, it is a play, and not a book. After seeing it, I insisted my family not read it first until we were all in the same room and could act it all out. Way more fun.

I saw it first, I still hated the story and I turned in my seat a couple of times and looked at my bf in shock what was happening and how it didn't make any sense. So no. The story has logical problems and the time travel background is awful compared to the original, as well as the characters. There was even magic they got wrong. Maybe I'm just a geek, but I couldn't enjoy the play in theatre as much as I would have with an amazing story. The actors, the lighting and the magic on stage was incredible, though.

I’ll be honest, you should read it yourself and make up your own opinion, especially for a topic such as this. I say that because I’ve read all three books in the series and while initially I thought kinda the same way as her, on reflection I ended up with quite a different interpretation of the theme.

I read the first book and I loved it. I don‘t think that her interpretation is correct. I think that there is a lot of depression going on with Will and therefore he can‘t see that his life as a disabled person is worth to live. He can not deal with the change (which is understandable) and can not see beyond his disability. Other people in his life see beyond the disability and beyond his fassade. They don‘t only see a person who is disabled but they see a character. I truly love this book because it is something different. It is not the typical tragic cancer love story but something even better. This book destroyed me and I cried so many times and even though I hate Jojo Moyes I still love her at the same time.

Love is something I wish everyone could experience because it is something that completely fills you up and radically changes you. Suddenly, you're not living to make yourself happy, you're living to make your loved one happy. Real love makes you selfless. A better version of you.

Da Queen people don't "need" anyone. They can eventually have someone if they want to. What good will a partner bring to me that I can't get myself? Nothing other than affection which isn't something anyone "needs" to survive. Does a man need a woman? No. Why should a woman need a man then? Also, if you NEED someone to make you a better human being, you're just not a nice person.

With reference to the Throne of Glass part, it's so annoying when people claim that a book is feminist simply because the lead is a woman. Like, seriously? Is that your whole idea of feminism? And it's especially annoying with books like ToG because they are so superbly stereotypical, that calling it "feminist" feels an insult to the whole movement.

Cursed child pissed me of sooo much because it portrays the characters so badly like especially rose. She was the child of Ron and hermione she would have been kind loving funny and just amazing but she was written like a bratty snob. Also they queer bate by subtexting Albus and Scorpius's realastionship though out the story and then making them discus there female crushes at the end. Also it is just so far fetched that Voldermort and Beatrix would have had sex and had a child. The whole thing is just a stretch for money. *note* : If you want to watch a harry potter themed play just what starkids *a very potter musical* you can find it on RU-vid it has a more likely plot than the cursed child😂

Okay this might be controversial, but....having two boys be close friends isn't a bad thing, just because they are straight. I don't see portraying them as good friends is queer baiting, it's fine if you think "oh are they together?" but we ARE talking about 11-yearold kids here. Most kids at that age don't even have a grasp of their sexuality, and talking about crushes doesn't actually say shit about your sexuality either.

My favourite sort of relationship in any book/ series is that between the lead character and their sibling. I adore my brother, therefore I love to read about well developed sibling stories. I read the Divergent series and cried my eyes out when Tris dies in place of Caleb because she realises if she lets him die she is going to lose the only family she has left. Tobias was an interesting and people were crazy about their romance of but for me, the relationship I followed right from the beginning was that of Tris and Caleb.

The place in Switzerland where Will goes is actually a real place. People do go there and do use that so I think it’s very important for that kind of story to be told because weather or not you agree with his choice, people make that choice every day. I think that’s the brilliance of it. There will be people like you who are outraged by it and there will be people who understand. It starts a very important narrative and the fact that you so vehemently oppose its story just proves that it did its job.

I completely disagree with you about "me before you". You're not okay with Will's decision and that is completely okay, but the book wasn't a guide at all and the message was not that every disabled person is unhappy. This whole story is based on Will's character. He was very active and had so much fun in his life and after the accident he just had to change his life completely and was forced to live it against all of his character traits. So I think that you did not really get the message of this book.

I haven't read Me Before You, so I can't comment about the writting, but I think you interpreted that book wrong. That story wasn't about a quadriplegic man, it was about a man with a depression. A depression brought by his condition, yes. But the main point of his issues were not that he was quadriplegic, but that he was quadriplegic and couldn't handle it. If it was just a question of him accepting his condition, then having Louisa accepting him the way he was would be enough. But no, he couldn't accept it. And other people who have also suffered with crippling depression can back me up on this: no matter how much everyone tells you that you're happy or you tell youself that you'rd happy, you still feel miserable. And you would still trade/end your life in a heartbeat even if they told you you won the lotery. I applaud the author for making such an original and reality injected story. A story that feels real and hurts to watch for the psychological sobriety that it has and the taboo it represents. I seriously recommend that you reconsider it :)
@ninamiller3168
@ninamiller3168 7 лет назад
Rosie King although I respect that Will suffered from depression, I think that what people forget is that , however the book dresses it up, he committed suicide. And I truly believe that the reason people don't really have a problem with that is because that they don't place any value on life as a disabled person. I find this is often how disabled people are perceived- as not really living, and it means that they will often not get the help they need when suffering from depression. Although I respect everyone has their own opinion, I am also conscious of the fact the misrepresentation disabled people face in the media greatly affects their treatment- in society and in a medical aspect.

Nina Miller I loved your theory/thoughts. I had never really thought of that or in that way. It does make sense what you are saying, and I can only say that I hope somehow people open their eyes to that fact and work to solve that problem. "Me before you" is one of the books I really dislike. Will was depressed because he used to a certain lifestyle and for him to live just meant to be active - to do sports, to work, to have sex etc. instead of adjusting to the situation and living with it, he chose to give up - because now he needed people's help and became dependent - which is a really humbling experience by itself, but Will's pride and ego couldn't take it. And don't even get me started on this Cinderella crap with Louisa and especially the story when she was raped... This book makes me angry. Sorry(
