Here's another routine ceramic repair. This one, a fine porcelain figurine. A simple repair showing the basics of this kind of repair. Also a quick demo of my method of color matching. I'll address this a length in another video.
Music: my original compositions, written and performed by me: "Polka Dot Dog" and "Promenade".
Thanks to Ellen Wight for the camera work. I couldn't do this without your help. Thanks!

Wow! I just found your channel. I dropped a box that held some sentimental figurines and shattered 3 or 4 of them . I thought I would see how other people have done repairs and pick up a few tips. I must say watching you just blew me away. I thought wow this guys really good! This is very professional, and looking at your hands , I bet he plays guitar too, and sure enough, you do. My dad played guitar and was a guitar maker so I’ve watched him repair a lot of stuff. I don’t have any airbrush skills but I have his files that he used to file down the frets so maybe they work, they’re really small. I’m going to look for the epoxy for the cracks. My dad would use tape like little clamps and I watched him spray beautiful sunburst designs on guitars. I wish he were still alive to help me fix these figurines but he is with me every time I do a project or watch someone like you who does amazing work. Thanks so much for sharing you talent.

I've been watching a few of his videos, and I've started fixing a few pieces of my own ceramics. I don't have his bonding agent, so I'm just using epoxy from the hardware store. They're not valuable pieces, so I don't mind using cheaper repair materials.

Hi Martin I would like to ask you a question of the glue you use. Have you ever used Araldite and do you feel the A&B Apoxy you use is better?
@marsgitar
@marsgitar 8 месяцев назад
Yes, I've used Araldite. It's a good bonding agent. I've not used it as a fill. I use A+B putty as a fill, not as a bonding agent. A+B would work as a bond but not as good as Araldite.

Golden has discontinued this product. The last time I ordered it I had to contact Golden at their corporate email. They said they don't make it anymore and sold me one of their last bottles of it, saying that if I wanted more they'd make it for me but I'd have to by a gallon of it. That'd be expensive. But since their 8 oz. bottle of it will last me the rest of my career, I'm probably good for a while. I'm sorry to say, I don't have an alternative to suggest for this product.

@Big-ib3kx

You are awesome!! What exactly is a hot box?
@marsgitar
@marsgitar 4 года назад
My hotbox is an old freezer, stripped down to just an insulated box with a door. Inside it there was installed a heating element from an electric oven. A thermocouple and a switch box with a temperature dial was added. There's also a small electric fan inside to circulate and even the heat distribution. There are shelves which I can adjust and add/remove as needed. I just set the dial for the temperature I want, usually about 150 F., and turn it on. The thermostat turns the heat on and off to maintain the set temperature. I use it mostly to preheat objects that are going to have HXTL applied to them, and also to speed curing of the HXTL already applied. Some epoxy gets stronger and/or cures faster when heated slightly. Occasionally, I'll use it to dry something out.

love your repairs was wondering what kind of glue you used for the lady figurine hysol ?? what do you buy? or what do you recommend for a person who wants to repair a break in a figurine at home. A simple break kind of like the lady figurine you are repairing in the white porcelain figurine with 4 breaks. Thanks :)

Hxtal is a bit hard to work with. For non-porous ceramics, you could try Elmer's brand adhesive called "china and glass cement. For porous ceramics Elmer's white glue works fine. Good luck to you.

Hi Martin any other question please. I see you use Golden Porcelain matte glaze in this video to matte the surface down. Can i use this product but with the gloss to finish off if i need it to finished in gloss. The reason is i haven't been able to fine the other gloss you use.....here in Australia.I hope this makes sense....lol
@marsgitar
@marsgitar 5 лет назад
It is my understanding that the "porcelain restoration glaze" shown in this video (and its gloss version) are meant to be a finishing coating in ceramic restorations. Check out Goldens web site for more info on their products. They will tell you more than I can remember. Lots of good info there. Have you tried contacting Sylmasta about an Australian distributor, or shipping to Australia?

How much do you charge ?
@marsgitar
@marsgitar Год назад
Cost is determined by how much work it is to repair it. Repair cost is based on the size of the object, how many broken pieces there are, how many missing pieces there are, how complicated t he design that must be replaced, how many colors must be replaced. Basically, cost is based on how hard it is to repair. It is not inexpensive.

It's a high tech epoxy made for glass repair. It's called HXTAL. sometime listed as Hxtal NYL-1 epoxy. Look it up on the web for a good price on a 60 gram kit. Not easy to work with. Takes days to cure.
