Gavin Harrison is not only a wonderful drummer but also keeps really active on drumming forums. I asked him about a section their EP Nil recurring* and he actually sketched me some sheet music and sent it to me to help me understand the music theory behind the part. *A particularly tricky part that uses poly-rhythm in it on 'What happens now' at around the 5 minute mark.

This performance was in 2005 on their "Arriving Somewhere..." DVD, before Fear of a Blank Planet came out. Superb, reference quality surround audio on this DVD, better sounding than most of my live blu-rays. Amazing performance; another highlight from this show is Hatesong (I see it getting requested a lot, maybe start with the studio version like you have been doing to see how elevated it gets live). Also for heavier tracks from this show, theres a cool little b-side that was never released on a proper album called Mother and Child Divided that you'll definitely love, as well as a very cool extended edition of their track Open Car, the first song of the night that really gets the crowd warmed up. Cheers!

I love at around 11:20 you see Steven actually look out at the audience just ever so briefly and the grin on his face you so rarely see - just for that brief moment he is the 16 year old again just doing what he loves and being gobsmacked that others are being so thrilled at WHAT he does. It is heartwarming stuff. And then of course you have the sheer artistic beauty of his guitar playing from 13:40 onwards that just lifts this live version so so far above the studio version. What a track.

Steven Wilson either solo or his projects Porcupine Tree and Blackfield can't do any wrong in my eyes (check out Blackfield Drew his collaboration with Aviv Geffen for some more amazing music) Also I think you would prefer the later Opeth as they have ditched the growls and their last album 'In Cauda Venenum' is my album of last year. Great reaction as always.

Loved the reaction. Porcupine Tree is my second favorite band and for good reason. They are absolutely perfect with composition, skill, and musicianship. You should check out Opeth's calmer side. Anything from the album heritage onward has no growls in them at all. I personally think the heritage album is a masterpiece. Opeth is my favorite band and I think that the hardcore fans are throwing the heaviest side of Opeth at you first and scaring you away. I'd recommend the song Haxprocess or Hex Omega (no growls).

Absolutely great reaction... You reasons for how you've arrived at your preferences as really well explained... I'm on of those old guys... who have arrived at Porcupine Tree via the 70's era prog bands... and obviously all the music in between... I do have to admit that they are the only prog metal band that I really listen to because of where I come from musically... I grew up in the 70's when I had Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull ad many many more as my influences and bands I went to see play live. I hadn't herd of Porcupine Tree before 2 years ago and it was a chance reaction that just flipped a switch in my head and told me... these are the guys for me..!! Thank you for your reactinos to them... Keep on Rocking and don't stop.... please.

PT is my favourite band, hands down. I can tell you're going down the rabbit hole! I recommend you check something from their back catalogue, their sound is vastly different but equally beautiful. I'd say a good place to start is "Where we would be" from Lightbulb Sun. It's a gorgeous, gorgeous song, simple as it can get. But I'd bet youve never heard a guitar "cry" like in this. You could try and dive backwards from there. PT is a long journey of discovery, but one like nothing else.

Fantastic to see you appreciating them bringing this amazing song to life! the musicianship, band interplay and vocal harmonies are quite captivating. I remember swinging my head to the heavier parts as well when I saw them live. They pulled me in back in 2007 and I still am a huge fan of all things Steven Wilson. I do hold out some small glimmer of hope that they might reunite for a tour or set of shows some day (But Steven seems to nip that idea in the bud every time he is asked). Welcome to the deep rabbit hole of PT, brother! PS - This show was in 2005 at Park West, Chicago as I recall -- so a bit before the Anesthetize Live you saw earlier.

Sorry for dropping several comments. I always write them while listening / watching when something comes to my mind so my reactions / responses are most genuine. I just wanted to say i feel the same way like you do with the vocals. I might be a drummer and i very much love Gavins Stuff and think he is sometimes even the main factor that makes the band great but i love nothing more than super harmonic, skillfull guitarplaying and clear very powerful and emotional vocals along with that. This Song here in particular is one of the few Live-Versions where Gavin is not stealing the show by doing something fantastic. Its The Vocals of the Guitarist John and the Guitar-Harmonics of Steven that completly blow my mind in this one. Thats why i recommended the Band Katatonia and "Nowhere now" from Stevens Solo Work. Fits just right in these things. I love your reactions, its not hard to see when you like or dislike a part or song and it seems to be very genuine, not staged or disarmed. Just straight up what you think and thats awesome

You have to listen to some Pink Floyd ! Their most famous songs might be Comfortably Numb, Another Brick in the Wall (this one is quite overrated, in my opinion), Money, Time, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. One of the best English bands of all time, no doubt! He also plays the music in No-Man and they have a totally different musical world. I think you would enjoy... 'Beautiful Songs You Should Know' and 'Truenorth'.

Totally with you, I couldn't listen to Opeth until Åkerfeldt stopped screaming ("Heritage" was the first album I could listen to all the way through). It was only then I could really engage with them musically and now, much to the chagrin of my mid-20's sons, I really like listening to them!

Steven Wilson - Home invasion/regret#9 and first regret/3 years older. Do any one of these two, and I promise you won't regret it.

One of my absolute favorite songs and this live version is incredible. Love the haunting delay sounds Steven does on the guitar in the outro. Another similar band I'd love to see you tackle is Anathema, who are British as well. They've been around for a good 20-30 years, initially playing death and doom metal and then transitioning into more of a progrock direction. Give "The Lost Song Pt. 1" (or all 3 parts) a go at some point. They've got both male (two brothers in fact) and female vocals going on and no growling.
