So impatient. Welcome to PorcupineTree. I was quite amused by your comment about this being a long song. Compared to their most popular songs, this is relatively short. Their magnum opus, "Anesthetize", is the shortest 17 1/2 minute song I've ever listened to. The live version from Tilburg cemented me in as a fan. I was really just looking for videos of the drummer, the legendary Gavin Harrison. What I found is nothing more or less than the greatest band that almost nobody has ever heard of.

Porcupine Tree are builders not instant gratification merchants. I think you may find a number of their songs slow starters but hell they are great finishers and the composition is always fabulously put together with a lot of detailed musical accents, offering all the musicians a chance to shine.

The reason for those first 2 minutes fits the attitude of the concept behind the song. It's manic/depression. That's why there is a contrast between rage and melancholy. The music fits the lyrics. The album is a statement on the overuse of anti-depressants, desensitization, dependence on technology and the solitary nature of society. It's the voice of a modern day outcast.

Knowing your feeling towards long songs I don't recommend this lightly, but you should really check out "Anesthetize". Before your mind explodes, it is a 17 minute song, but it is the most incredible long song I've ever heard (I also play guitar and drums, so it takes a lot for me to dig long songs as well). I love your reactions!

Yes, one of the finest long songs ever! And the live version from live in tilburg is worth checking out.

Second that! One of few +15 mins i can listen to without skipping. ...though John Wesley is no Alex Lifeson, he still manage the solo somehow. And man... Gavin Harrison... what a fantastic drummer 😍

Yeah, for me it’s pretty much only this song and Black Rose Immortal by Opeth I can listen to and Catch Thirtythree, if you count that as a song

Ok! I’ve thought about which porcupine tree song will get you in the rabbit hole. This one is a good one, but I think there are SO many more they have to grab your interest. Gavin Harrison is an absolute force behind that drum kit and Steven Wilson is one of the best “composers” in prog rock. They have so many facets that make them one of my all time favorites.. I’ve been playing drums since 84 and us rhythm players appreciate a reaction channel from a knowledgeable bass player! Thank you for what you do David! Please give these guys some more listens! Live performances are sometimes even better than their album counterparts. Anesthetize live Hate song live Trains live Arriving Somewhere But Not Here lice All great choices.

Welcome to Porcupine Tree, these are a top band with fine musicians, as you pointed out, their timing is immense! Prob best live band I have seen, really recommend “hatesong” again the live version, this again is where you will see the timing and the magic of each one… also echo with the rest with anesthetize live version from Tilburg is gold! Enjoy the journey man! 🤘

What a band! The album it's taken from, fear of a blank planet, was by many considered best prog album 2000-2010. My favourite is "Anesthetize"... 17 minutes long, but it starts with an intricate drumrythm by Gavin Harrison, who is on my top 3 list. And it grabs you... and one of few long songs which can keep my attention since it goes through passages. Rock, metal, ambient.. you name it. Absolute masterpiece. ...but considered you not liking long songs, might be risky?

It's not that I hate long songs, I hate long songs that I don't enjoy. If the song is long and I enjoy the song (ie Rush - 2112, Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons) I have absolutely zero problem with it and I'll give the song a great score. On the flip side, if the song is 12 minutes long, and I am not enjoying it or worse I'm hating it, then I'm gonna be even harder on it. I equate it to being tortured. Imagine hanging upside down by fishhooks through your toes over a vat of boiling vinegar and iodine, and then having boiling acid being injected into the webbing between your toes. NOW...would you rather have that continue on for 4 minutes, or 13 minutes? See my point? Like I said if I enjoy the song and I'm really into it, I could care less how long it is as long as I'm enjoying it. As a matter of fact, I'll probably give the song a higher score because it did manage to captivate me for 13 minutes. On the flip, if I'm not feelin' it, if I'm not enjoying it, it's gonna get slammed.

@@THEDavidHeretic Got it! I just wondered if it would be a waste of time. Though it has to be said: I like Anesthetize slightly more than Way out of here, because it is more varied and has some absolutely glorious passages. I would very much understand it if you didn't like it. I more fear for the ones who believe its the best thing ever, and believe that you were based before listening.

@@THEDavidHeretic Forgot there is a live video of it too. Live from Tilburg 2007 or so? ...but as i mentioned: without Alex Lifeson who did contribute with a solo on the studio-version.

I understand that this music will not be completely attractive to a rocker. But I appreciate that even though it's not your cup of tea, you can appreciate it. This band, together with Pink Floyd, for example, taught me to listen to less heavy music. Building an atmosphere with long intro is quite typical for PT.

7 minutes, ha. Anesthetize is at least 16 minutes and such a phenomenal song live by them! Love PT and glad they have new stuff after 11 years! Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is another fan fave. Three of my fave PT songs are Trains, a shorter one for them, ha, Time Flies, and Russia on Ice.

Very prog like. Had it's good points and low points. Had no idea what score you were gonna give this, but a reasonable score for what the song was. Agree on the hook. Had a couple of hard moments that I liked but overall a good song.

Yeah, definitely add Anesthetize and Arriving somewhere but not here (live versions) to that long list of yours. They will both be worth getting around to.... despite your shall we say reticence towards long tracks 😉

It started as a joke. Steven Wilson invented a fictional ‘70’s prog rock band and did a couple of tapes of what it might sound like. They got out and started to get traction, so he went with it.
