This really makes me want to restore my car.....wait.....this makes me thankful that there’s someone who has the patience to accomplish something of this magnitude, who is willing to share the process...once again Mike, thank you. Those parts look good enough to eat...the car is beyond words.
Another superb video, attention to detail is second to none. One thing to note regarding the fuel hose, make sure you buy the reinforced hose which is compatible with modern fuels. The braid covered rubber stuff will literally melt within a few months using fuels containing ethanol, in fact its never been any good.
Hello Bike Yes you are absolutely correct..We did a future video switching out fuel lines as guys were having issues with the Choline. More issues also came later with this gas tank . Future video coming regarding the issue. Fuel outlet is not compatible with early cars Cheers!
Another great video! As a warning to everyone, be very careful with fuel hoses. Modern ethanol-containing fuels eat the hoses from the inside. Throw away any old unused stock -(hoses must be mfg in the last 2 years) and make sure they are J30 R9 specced. The American R9 spec is the stricter in the world and even that, considers fuel hoses as consumables which must be replaced every 10-15 years. A friend restoring a BMW had new fuel hoses burst twice.
Hello Gplus. Good point to bring up! Although this hose this German Cohline hose is rated for modern fuels..I would imagine the life span to be quite short. The best fuel line to use would be high pressure fuel injection line..It will handle the ethanol blends longer than these low pressure lines. Ethanol reeks havoc on everything... I think our fuel blend in Nevada is 10% Will be interesting to see how it holds up..I prefer the cloth wrapped look but will change out if it looks like it could become a problem
@@MikesRestorations yup, last week I replaced my 20 year old Audi fuel lines with Cohline 2192, this is also rated for inside the fuel tank. Old hoses looked like a 100 year old turtle's butt.
Your attention to detail is motivating Mike. Time spent on the front side avoids so much aggravation and potential damage should something have to come apart again to address an issue. Nice work. 👍
Hi Mike. Those shots from the underside remind me of the attention to detail you have maintained throughout this build. Congratulations on another milestone. Must feel great to have that tank in place.
Good video, this was helpful. (Mine is a 73.5 CIS, and the old gas needs to be removed.) On an old Porsche factory video, early 911's were shown being test driven, after being newly assembled- they all got exactly one gallon of fuel at sendoff. When installing or removing any rubber hose- if you heat the hose end with a heat gun for 5-10 seconds, it will expand the rubber enough so that the hose will slide on or off easily.
Hey Mike I just sent a request about a color code I probably should’ve read the previous comments and I found it thank you. What are you working on now??
Hello Scott I’m glad you were able to find what you were looking for. Currently I’m still working on this project. We are now in the final stages of engine assembly
Thanks Tom The large hose exits straight to the ground through the front pan..Its also possible to smell fuel vapor if the gas tank in more than half full Cheers!
Mike - i have not installed the fenders so I don’t have a filler tube installed yet but would like to install the fuel tank. Should I wait until I put the fenders on? I have a 69 911e so the tank fuel line hook up is a bit different.
Hello Roger Installing the fuel tank now shouldn't be a problem..You might have to wait to secure the 3 hold down brackets until later. That will give you the ability to move and wiggle it around to some degree once fenders come into place. Also if you have-not seen my latest video on Final Walk Around I recommend as I am going over updated fuel line recommendations. I will make a note of this on the fuel tank install video in the description box. Highly recommended to use high pressure fuel injection hose between the hard tunnel line and fuel inlet screen at the tank. Choline fuel lines are not holding up to modern fuel harshness. Good luck!
Also one more tip Roger! Its a good idea to leave off the steering cover skid plate that covers the fuel and brake lines also. I would test drive the car and make sure no fuel is leaking from the area and brake fluid also not leaking. After successful shakedown then cover the area back up with cover plate if all is safe.
@@MikesRestorations Thank you Mike . It’s listed on the original window sticker, but haven’t found a source for install guide. Really enjoy your channel. Thank you so much 🏁
Mike, I heard you mentioned you used 2k Urethane over the POR15, did you do any special prep to make it stick & not react? I've taken your tip and cleared over VHT engine enamel I used on the gearbox. Didn't go too bad couple of very minor reaction spots to fix but otherwise good. Maybe I applied the 2k clear a bit think in those spots on the first coat.
Hello Rob POR 15 can be sanded 100% with 400-600 grit and used as a primer under coat or base color for small parts to be top coated with 2k Urethane. You can also apply base coat to it and 2k on top of that will work great! The trick is %100.00 wet sanding the surface. soap and water rinse. Since working with the engine parts in that previous video that were VHT base coated and 2k top coated. I no loner use VHT for finish painting. The industry is always reformulating the chemistry to meet current VOC guidelines and emissions. About 4 years ago the VHT was an amazing paint off the shelf and could bring amazing results. I will be doing some video on this when we dig deeper into the engine build. Now days I can no longer get the finish results on spay out so I quit using it for finish work. I do use in now though for sandable base that will be covered with upholstery. Also its recommended do a test area when working with any paints for this reason. What worked last year may not work this year and so on.. It drives me crazy! Its even worse in the cabinet industry In that previous video I used the VHT on clean freshly sandblasted parts. I don't think it will stick well without the sandblasted surface. Timing of top coat is the most important. If top coating more than one hour after the base color the VHT will react. It should be within the first 15 minutes under the correct temperatures and then stop. Further top coating will result in a reaction. I think you'll be okay on the gearbox but I wouldn't recommend going further with the VHT for the above reasons. If ever you have any kind of paint reactions its best not to proceed. The industry is in a state of constant change for profit and meeting federal regulations Good Luck!
Hello gonojo thank you The tank is by JP Dansk..ordered from Parts Geek. Fast shipping and very good price. Quality excellent! Base color is smooth black but will need to be textured and color coated.
Mike - I’ve a ‘71 Targa (left hand drive) over in the U.K. and have recently noticed small fuel leaks after I’ve filled it up, with the leak manifesting under the LHS fog-light blanking plate at the front fender of the car. Is this due to fuel coming out of the breather pipes, as I seem to have a breather pipe diverted down to the front of the car (?) .... I can send you a picture if you let me know your email ?
Hello pcoop ,Im not that familiar with the fuel system on that year but if you would like to send some pics Ill have a look and see if we can figure out what's going on. mikemuskcabinets@gmail.com
@@MikesRestorations How did you come across that color to match the factory color. I have wasted a bunch of time trying to figure this out for painting an early 912. Then I just settled for a silver grey RAL 7001 color code I found on a Porsche forum. Thanks, you have made restoring my car 10 times easier with your videos and attention to detail.
Hello Lauren Im glad these videos are being helpful! To match the color as close as possible I cut a sliver of the rubberized coating and matched it as close as possible at my automotive paint store. The PPG production color was pretty close! You could could also have them mix a custom color to spray out for your tank. Just bring them a sample and it should be possible Good Luck!
Im not sure if the tank color is the same in 69 but this is the color I used. Color was a standard PPG Deltron Fleet color..Charcoal Gray #34617 You could also cut a sliver of rubber and take to a paint shop for color matching Good Luck!
