Replacing the 911 Tank

I knew I'd have to put some effort into this tank already when I bought the car, but then other issues had become more important.
When I started the project, I still hoped to be able to restore it, but it turned out that all the chemical products for derusting it internally and sealing it again, would cost almost as much as a new one ...

Anyone who owns a 911 air cooled Porsche just has to dig these vids! If one has a certain amount of practical skill then greasy fingers edits the vids self explanatory …. Like lifting the new fuel tank, a puff and it’s heavy but manageable, tightening a nut with a grunt tells me it’s more than nipped up but tight ( grunt tight) but not over tight, his breath in his workshop tells me it’s winter, video timing on various tasks is amazing and is an art in itself, air cooled heaven this channel HAS to be…… LOVE em…🎬

I took your comment to watch it again. So innocent and simplistic back then!

As I’m sitting here looking at your video and enjoy my breakfast I miss when you voice over and talk about what you’re doing on your newer videos I guess that’s the evolution that you just keep getting better just a comment.

Yes, I only started after the first year with voice over. Hearing your own voice in a film is an irritating experience! 😆

Thanks, mate! Next bunch of videos will follow in the fall when the green Targa’s rear end is due for some repair and maintenance. Brakes, suspensions, exhausts, ...

Hi, nice video. Just a couple of questions: Why RAL did you end up using? and could someone give me the dimentions of the foam gasket? Thanks.
@GreasyFingers
@GreasyFingers 4 года назад
Thank you, Vincent. I used RAL 7044. The gasket would be about 10 mm wide and 25 high in uncompressed state. I recommend to take a specialised product as you a want it to be fuel resistent, like e.g. from Rosepassion.com

Keep up the good work 😊 I must say it is such a joy seeing how you work on this car. I must be very satisfying being able to do all this on such a beautiful car…… What will be the next job?
@GreasyFingers
@GreasyFingers 4 года назад
Thanks, Peter. Much appreciated. The next job with the Targa is some rust protection of the trunk's cavities. Cutting the video these days ... Then I'll move on to some work at the Carrera and the Giulia I've just bought.

Hello, I’m pulling the gas tank out of my 78 to replace it with another and was wondering what you found to be the best way to pick at the foam seal around the gas tank? Thank you looking forward to hearing your response.

Great concise video, I particularly like the installation of sender unit before installing tank. One question, was that a relocated fuel pump bolted to front cross member? I am contemplating same on my 911T CIS. did you use the same hose/tunnel tubing? I did not see a video on that on your channel. THANKS!
@GreasyFingers
@GreasyFingers 3 года назад
Thanks, Fred! I used the original hose clips at the original place, no relocation. Not quite sure though whether our cars have the same system, Bosch made regular changes to it in the early years.

Oh gosh; at this point, I'm wondering what the condition of my 40 yo Targa tank is. I've never had any issues I'm aware of, so maybe better not to open that Pandora's Box. It spent a lot of its time as a California car, and I've kept it garaged the past 15 years here in NC.

Hi David. I wouldn’t be too concerned. They’re all a bit rusty, but given that there are two filters, one before the pump, one before the injection, not much can happen. If you’re in doubt, just release the bolts of the fuel gauge sensor and you can have a look inside.

@GreasyFingers
@GreasyFingers 2 года назад
Hallo Gerhard.

Hi I have had a big problem with using an aftermarket tank with the OEM fuel pump in that the it did not fit correctly at the bottom. You obviously had no problem can I ask which tank you used?
@GreasyFingers
@GreasyFingers 3 года назад
Hey Chris, sure thing. I used the JP Dansk product and it performs great. (Let me mention that they sponsor this channel, but you have to know I picked them because I like their products.)

Greasy Fingers, Hi. Great video, I see you mentioned that you used the Dansk tank (which is WAY cheaper than Porsche) but I understood there was a downside that it has no internal baffle so fuel slips about - any issues that you’ve experienced?
