How to build the right side of the engine case, including oil galley plugs, crankshaft, camshaft and distributor. First time build, with tons of help from Jake Raby's DVD (link below), case machining from Len at Hoffman Automotive Machine Jorge at European Motor Works and Will at Westchester Auto Machine. Watch as I assemble the Type 4 Store 9590 camshaft, index it to the crank, and index the distributor drive to everything.

@16:55 -- On all stock-type 914 distributors that I know of, there is a mark scribed on the lip of the distributor body at the #1 cylinder position. The teeth on the distirbutor drive gear are slanted (hypoid gears) so you actually have to turn the driveshaft a bit to get the teeth of the drive shaft to mate to the drive gear on the crank. This is especially apparent if you R&R the shaft with the engine together.
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 3 года назад
Thanks for pointing that out, Dave. Yep. On all that I’ve owned (before this one) there’s a mark on the lip. For some reason this one doesn’t have it...so I thought I’d show how to line it up using the cap lead.

On all Bosch distributors there is a cut slot on distributor surface where the cap meets and that is number one cylinder.. Good video. Have had many of these type 4 motors apart. May have to do my own 2 litre soon,at least a reseal.

Hey Ian, another great video! I have a 1.7 in my 914, but now I have a good 2.0 crank so I will start accumulating more parts to do a 2056. This video gets me motivated! I noticed you used oil on the bearings vs. assembly lube. Did you want it to be lighter viscosity?
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 3 года назад
Thanks. I did use oil...as Jake recommends in his video. Full disclosure...I went back and used assembly lube after I shot this because the engine will likely sit for a while before starting. It's amazing how much stickier that stuff is.
@CrispysProjects
@CrispysProjects 3 года назад
@@IanKarr I agree assembly lube is ideal if the engine is left for a while, and it's always a funky colour, but for a engine being started 'soon' engine oil is spot on

Hi ian - I’m following you’re vides as I build my 914 1.7l as a first build. Today I started and really struggled with the distributor install. Does the base of the clamp sit flush against the case when it’s proper ally seated or is there a gap? I must have installed it 10 times and as far as I can tell it’s seated (rotor turns when the crank moves) but it didn’t have a satisfactory seating - also, did you use the small spring between the shaft and the distributor? I couldnt see it in the video - and your two ends met as you pressed it all into the case, whereas the spring pushes mine off and makes its difficult to be sure to two shafts are seated right…
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 2 года назад
Hi Ian (great name btw). Yes, the clamp sits flush against the case (or very nearly so). And yes, I do run the spring under the distributor. I forgot to put it in when I made the video. Good eye! The trick with the spring is to put a dab of grease on the bottom so it stays where it should. Not sure how/why your dizzy isn't seating properly. Have you made sure it's oriented properly? The bottom of the dizzy only fits one way into the drive gear.
@ianoshea8817
@ianoshea8817 2 года назад
@@IanKarr cheers Ian for the reply - yeah it’s all orientated correctly - I’m going to try the install again with a replacement distributor as The one That came on the engine is a cheap knockoff - do you have any recommendations of which distributors to run on this engine (1700cc)- the more I research them the less certain I am, as is often the way
@thomasbeisner7005

Ian: Did you purchase the Crankshaft fully assembled (Fully reconditioned and balanced, with Connecting Rods, Distributor Gear, etc.)? If so, from which Vendor? If not and you purchased components separately, which Vendor then assembled everything? (Great help to have it already assembled). Appreciate your advice so thank you in advance.
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 2 года назад
My existing crank and rods were in great shape. I had the crank evaluated, balanced and polished by Westchester Machine in Tarrytown NY. Jorge at European Motor Works installed new rod bearings. Good luck with your build!

Ian, I might have missed something when you installed the distributor, did you put in that nasty little spring between the gear and the end of the distributor? I know your distributor snapped in with ease. With spring it wasn't so easy. Love your videos...Gary
