Many of the cars from the film were genuine 917's, but the one from the famous crash scene was (as Testacojones said) a Lola T70 with a 917 suit on. Probably because your feet were behind the front wheels in a T70 - they weren't in a 917. 917 drivers were known to go to extroadinary lengths to avoid crashing front first...
This was made in Australia and is powered by a normally aspirated Porsche flat six with a vertical cooling fan. I'm considering buying one or a 906 or a 906, can't decide yet.
Yes there were some real 917 cars in the movie, but whatever 917 and Ferrari 512 they crashed were Lola T70s dressed up. For the big crash the car was remote control and it needed two people to control it. They messed up and crashed the car while filming, but the crash was so good that they kept it just like that for the film. Oh and Steve did drive a 917, I might be wrong but I think that he only did 120mph during the movie. Good to see how fans the 917 has all over the world.
This video brought back memories of my youth where I squandered countless hours playing Accolade's Test Drive II, driving supercars on public roads. Thanks for sharing
the paper is a steve mc queen photograph in his gulf jacket doing the victory sign. i have it in the car all the tme and when it moves i call it the ghost of steve.
The Mazda 787B had turbo engine,a thing that 917 didn't have, and it isn't alone as fastest race car. You can't forget the Dauer Porsche 962,Le Mans 1994 winner, that can-in the street version- hit more than 400 km/h too(407 km/h to be more accurate).
Call Vasek Polak in Hermosa Bch Ca.He has passed but i believe his sons run the dealership if its still there. You might be able to buy one outright if they still have any.
oh, it was overall speed. Ive red rumors on how it reached 440 km/h. But yet, i havent found videos. im not sure on the time it took to win the 1991 24h du Le Mans.
The engine sound is nice, but I doub't that this is a true-blue 917. If I am not mistaken, just 17 cars were ever buit. Even McQueen couldn't put his hands in one; he drove a "dressed up" 908.
the 787B is NOT TURBO. its 2.6L 4 rotors engine. on Mazda's racetrack, Myogi proving ground they got the car up to speed around 437 km/h. Mazda's rotary engine were banned after the win in 1991.
where did you get your info? because both cars can reach speeds of over 400km/h and as far as I know the 917 still holds the fastest lemans victory in 1971. I tried to check the lemans history on the website and didn't mention the mazda 787B as the fastest, but maybe they didn't change. Do you mean overall speed of the car or the fastest victory in lemans?
Fantastic video - lovely sound even though it's "only" a flat-6 :) Where was the video shot? The roads look excellent for driving. I read somewhere that you own two replicas and one real 917? If that's true, you are a lucky lucky man :) Cheers!!
doesn't sound like a 12 cylinder, If the dudes are driving around on the streets it must be a Replica, guess with a flat six porsche engine... Nice work!!!!
