Couple of things: Good luck with the sidemarker seals - personally I found the ones you mentioned to be a lot thicker than I'd like, but let us know how they work for you. Did the body shop weld the holes shut on the bumper or just bondo? If welded, was it hard to find a shop that could weld aluminum? The early cars didn't have that metal support piece in the center of the front valence, so maybe that's why the mounting hole wasn't pre-drilled, but who knows for sure. Lastly, really commend you on the level of documentation and use of the highest quality parts available. The car looks awesome. Sorry if this has been asked before but do you think you'll ever go back to the 944 style side protection decal? The black one currently applied is a 911 style, right?
@NC944er
@NC944er 2 года назад
Hey man, thank you! I really appreciate the comments... I do get what you're saying with the side marker seals, as I just installed them today. They seem to be more of a foam rubber rather than a firm silicon gasket. So I was able to firmly press the lenses into the side fitting while tightening down the nuts pretty significantly on the back and found that the gaskets compressed nicely that way. They appear to be about as flush as my rear lenses now, which still retain the factory seals... and it's better than having them loose and rattling. The body shop welded over the holes on the front bumper for me and I was fortunate enough to have chosen a shop that already had aluminum welding capabilities. They did charge a couple hours for the welding though and the labor on the bumper prep was just over $300, but the end result was worth it I think. The current stone guards are modified from a 930 style decal (I cut some material from the bottom and rounded them out). I was experimenting a bit and while they look unique, I don't know that they really suit the car. I actually have 2 sets of the D-shaped 944 stone guards on hand in black and plan to switch back at some point. I do prefer them in black against the light colored paint and they accent well with the black impact strips, etc.

Yeah, those zip ties are buried deep in the parts catalogue! They are part number: 443-971-850-A. For the A/C condenser weather stripping, I cleaned up my old ones really well and reused them since they run about $30 apiece for new ones. They can be found under part number: 944-025-115-00.

Very nice video. Thank you for sharing. Regarding the front spoiler, I noticed you do not show application of body sealer compound at the fender. For my 83’ I understand it’s applied between the spoiler and fender, and above the washers and nuts on top of the fender. Thanks again and take care!
@NC944er
@NC944er Год назад
Hey, thank you! You are correct that the factory workshop manual Vol.3 - Body, section 63-3, recommends use of a “non-hardening” sealer inside the flanges between the front spoiler and the fenders, which would be similar to a window sealer. My understanding is it’s not structural so much as the intent was simply to prevent water from collecting in that joint. The panel gap around the bumper is so bad by design, allowing a ton of water into the front end anyway, that I’ve found it doesn’t make a huge difference. Let me know your experience if you end up applying the sealer and any other perceived benefits. 👍🏼
@DiecastHD

@@NC944er My pleasure. I’m currently using electrical tape between the fender and spoiler. I had to get the car back up quick. The spoiler was tweaked after running some over late at night on LA’s 101. It looked bad so I took it apart and resembled. Looks a lot better now and on the road for Summer. My tired lights need an upgrade! All the best!
@NC944er
@NC944er Год назад
@@DiecastHD I’m glad you got it better positioned! The front spoilers tend to wander and shift over the years as the urethane looses its flexibility to the elements. And yes, the fog lights catch a lot of debris. Adding new lenses to mine made a major improvement in appearance, I just wish they weren’t $160 apiece!

@NC944er
@NC944er 2 года назад
Yeah, that’s going to be a challenge with these cars as they continue to age. Unless the rest of the paint job is well preserved, a freshly painted front spoiler alone will look somewhat out of place. You may have to decide how far you want to go with it, up to the point of a full respray, but a good paint shop should be able to look at it and provide some recommendations.

For the just the glass lenses check out part numbers: 944-631-901-00 and 944-631-902-00. It looks like a number of vendors have the right lens, but not the left (discontinued). There are couple on eBay, but for the prices I’m seeing, may as well just buy the whole assembly.

Another amazing video. My friend recently crashed our 944 (oversteer on a highway entry), he hit the concrete with the front. We will have to replace the front bumper(s), radiator, the chassis part that holds the radiator, power steering belt + wheel etc. Now my question: Where did you find the chassis part that holds the radiator in place and just all the parts in general? This would help us out a TON! :)
@NC944er
@NC944er Месяц назад
Hey, sorry to hear about the accident. As long as the frame isn’t damaged, most of those front supports and parts are fairly easy to replace. For this build, I sourced parts from six different vendors based on pricing and availability. The lower front valance came over from Germany and took about 3 weeks to arrive, but most of the other stuff was available in the US. I have a video on how to identify part numbers and search/shop for parts that would probably help you out in this case. Where did you buy the radiator? what brand? Do you think it’s wise to buy a fully aluminum one instead of OE?
@NC944er
@NC944er 2 года назад
The radiator is manufactured by Laengerer & Reich (LRO) for Porsche and is OE part number 944-106-031-03. I picked it up on eBay as new-old-stock and saved a couple hundred $. I have not personally used the all aluminum radiators available, but I would probably pause if their use required significant modification of the factory setup. If the dimensions are the same however and all the connections match up, seems like it should be fine.
