Porsche 959: Posterchild of the Supercar Renaissance - XCAR 

As strange as it seems today, lots of cars back in the day did not have passenger side mirrors. My 1974 Nova does not and I've seen a lot of older cars that do not. Also it's so cool that you got to spend time with the 959! Porsche keeps it in a museum but still will let it go out and be enjoyed as a car should! Great work and video guys

I think this Porsche 959 would be the only Porsche i'd ever want to own, a real classic. I'd have to have mine in silver though, if only for the fact that i had a poster of one on my bedroom wall back in the 80's.

It's a shame the 959 is so forgotten now, The F40 is so well known...

I used to race one of these... in The Duel: Test Drive II.

It's all a matter of taste, but the 959 is the nicest looking Porsche I've ever set my eyes on. The rounded nose, the rear "wing", the perfect 5-spoke rims, the stylish vents, the computers on all 4 wheels, sequential turbos, enough power (450HP) if you should ever find a stretch of road to test the car's limits, etc. It's beautiful, and as the video narrator states it so well- it ushers in the beginnings of the super-sports car class. And if it's so ornery to drive, it can be modified (I know I'm not supposed to say that, but I don't care, all right?) by certain tuners who know what they're doing. I like Ferraris of course, but hats off to this wonderful car. Almost as nice as a Jaguar XKE...

I only recently discovered this car from a coworker. But after reading the history behind it I realized this is truly an amazingly badass car. This is just so cool on so many levels. There's few Porsche's that have the kind of impact this car has. And it's quite old years wise, but still relevant today. This is my new dream car!

Porsche continually upgraded the 959. Eventually Porsche claimed that it would go 204mph making it as fast as the F50. Forget the F40.

For me, the best porsche ever made

I just spent time with a guards red one with 1k km on it, I didn't get to drive it but I did get to check it all out and start it. That's probably all I"ll be able to do for now. But it was very cool.

The 918 is the true successor of the 959, not the Carrera GT. Yes, the Carrera GT was very fast when it came out (and it sounds like a beast), but i don't think its engineering is as ground breaking as the 959 was at its time (not at all to be fair, it's more of an old school car actually, keeping things relatively "simple": manual gearbox, high revving NA engine). The 918 however, was the first Hybrid Hypercar ever, and did set the Nürburgring lap record for a worldwide production and street legal car (Radical are street legal in few countries), but also is the quickest car to 60 as well (something like 2.4). The 918's acceleration off the line is pretty much unmatched (only the Veyron can do something but it really catches up at around 200). It's actually very impressive how it ressembles the 959: it has two versions (918 Spyder and 918 Weissach Package), uses the best technologies for cars of its days, is one of the very quickest and fastest things on the road, shows the future of Porsche for decades to come, and is loved by the public. Maybe its only downside is that they produced quite a lot of them actually (918), so it's still rare but 3 times less basically...

I actually had a tour of the Porsche factory in the spring of 1986 and saw them assembling the 959s in the Reuterwerk building. When I worked at Weissach in early 1991, I would walk past a display 959 engine that was sitting in the foyer of their emissions building. It remains the sports car that introduced more technologies to the automotive industry, than any other that I’m aware of. The F40 was very crude and simple in comparison.

There are two different variants of the 959 this one a sport and the deluxe. Most of the sports were white. I used to read about this car in car magazines back in the 80's. Thanks.

To be honest I´ve never really been a big Porsche fan - and a 911 has looked almost the same for 50 years now. I´ve always been more attracted to Jags and Italian sports cars. Furthermore it´s funny to see the 959 and the cockpit of the car. That was actually how a Porsche dashboard looked up and until the mid 1990´ies. Not exactly state of the art if you ask me. However I have to say that I am impressed about the technical level of the 959. Wayyyy ahead of its time.

Fun fact - initially they were not legal to drive in the US because Porche would not give the government 4 cars to destroy in crash tests.

I thought this and the F40 were the first production cars to crack the 200MPH mark though? Or was it just the F40? With the 959 having the highest top speed until the Ferrari came along.

This guy should learn how to read the odometer, at 5:43 he said that the car did little over 4600Km while looking at the odometer at the beginning 1:10 it clearly shows that the car did over 46000km!!!
