►Keeping your engine cool is a necessity while driving. The radiators, coolant, thermostat, and water pump all work together to make that happen, but the latter is a point of concern for the early 987.1 Caymans and Boxsters sold between 2005 and 2008. Porsche 987 water pump replacements are common occurrences as their intervals can be as short as 60,000 miles. It's a relatively small price to pay for ownership, and a proper replacement means several years of trouble-free driving ahead.
When the water pump starts to fail, your engine wont be able to cool itself effectively and begin to overheat. Too hot of a temperature can damage bearings, burn head gaskets, and warp cylinder heads, leading to significantly expensive repairs, if not a new engine. During the water pump replacement, we also recommend you replace the thermostat. It has a similar lifespan to the pump and is also critical in regulating the engine's temperature.
In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's professional DIY'er replaces the water pump and thermostat on a 987.1 Cayman.

These videos are actually really nice to watch when you are choosing the next car. They help get an idea on how difficult the maintenance of it would be. Judging by how many times Mike used words like "annoying", it seems like it is better to stick to something with engine in the front 😁

My 987.2 looks nothing like this underneath, strange for just a .2 update

Great video - thank you! FYI, on my '07 Cayman S the t-stat bolts were E10 (vs. M10 flange head bolts as in the video). Keep 'em coming!

Not sure if it’s allowed, but check out pelican parts Porsche section. Tons of 986 content there. Not the awesome videos we find here but useful info.

So I’ve just talked with the tech at my local dealer about replacing the dichtring. They claim you just place it in there with the thermostat, place it on the car and tighten the bolts. It’s supposed to just pop into place as you tighten with measly 9ft lbs of torque. WTF?

Per my other post, the dealer is dead wrong and didn’t know how, ultimately, while an independent shop solved it in 5 minutes. So when regular owners/shade tree mechanics like we viewers solve these problems, know that you are smarter than a Porsche Wilmington technician.

Made the mistake of trying to remove the dichtring and so now it’s toast and yet still in. Agghhhh.

Built myself a puller. Popped it out. Then messed up installing. Tried to pop it in instead of pressing slowly. Thought, OK, I’ll take to my dealer. Big mistake. They couldn’t do it. Then told me, here are the instructions, you just put the pieces all together and the pressure of the bolts will pop that ring in. That’s absolutely incorrect. And I brought the thermostat to show them why (it’s 80 minutes each way for me). So they insisted I was wrong. Then said they wouldn’t do it (after failing and damaging the dichtring). But told me if I brought them the car, they would (magically?) be able to do it. !!!???!!! Took it to an independent Porsche mechanic who used a standard bearing press and was done in 5 minutes. 5 minutes!! I took it back and explained how it was done, hoping they’d get it right for someone else, and was told they didn’t need my help, thanks. So, the moral is, pretty much any shop should be able to do this task. But not Porsche.

10Nm torque is one grunt with a normal ratchet.
@f.kieranfinney457
@f.kieranfinney457 Месяц назад
I have no idea how I’m going to measure torque on my 987.2. Bolts are far more difficult to access, requiring 1/4 drive nano head ratchet and a flex adapter to reach several bolts especially the top left. Even the smallest torque wrench is way too big (the head size is the biggest issue). I’m hoping I can get one on the torque wrench and just remember how it felt. Yikes!

The calibrated wrist will take care of you on those low torque value pieces of hardware!
