When it comes to resale values some people prefer as original as possible and some like to make changes. To see them all original is very nice, but subtle upgrades can also be a positive.

Sareiviseth Diep Air cooles Porsches have no issue with the heat. I live in Southern CalifornIa and we see 35 degrees a lot, even in hour long traffic jams heat is not an issue. Even old 60s Porsches manage the heat well. So no excuses. Buy one!

Essentially....no , not if running right. We fit electric air con, or upgrade air con to these for your climate. The engine, that will be fine in the heat or the cold, .

993 are really good in a way, underrated because buyers dont know how much more developed they are, thats under the skin in the detail.

@@PorscheVideosuk "Underrated" is a relative thing. 993 2S with reasonable mileage costs more than a brand new 911. I've given up hope buying one of these. You can get many 996's for the same money LOL.

I think you will find that there were ‘major’ improvements to the rear suspension, hence the reason for the wider rear end than previous models. These engines suffer very few problems, hydraulic tappets unlike 964, no problem with dual mass flywheel like 964, no overheating of distributors like 964, no bore scoring, failing IMS like 996, and far superior build quality to 996. The engines are bomb proof, why do you think they used them for racing and in the GT3? They are obviously the best air cooled 911, since the previous generations were improved upon each time.......sorry, totally disagree with your logic!

Well, you have your opinion and I have mine, that is as it should be. The 996 engine is very strong in general, with a couple of exceptions. The IMS issue is best taken care of with a bearing swap when the clutch refreshed, and upon purchase for those who are worried. There was some bore score issues, mainly in the facelift model, so this should be examined. Air/oil separator, one or two other minor things, then it is solid. The 993 is similar, it is bulletproof when taken care of, and when the major issues are corrected. Here is a (very long) list of things which go wrong with the 993: rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/171087-993-technical-session-recap-you-should-have-been.html#post1721158 The best Mezger engine is probably the 996 GT3. Note that although it shares cases with the 993, it is a water-cooled engine, and most of the tech is interchangeable with the 996. It is not a 993 engine.

Agreed the 996 represents great value for money in the current market, but I wouldn't buy one unless the IMS had been uprated and bore scoring checked. The 4S seems to hit the sweet spot, looks pretty good, still going up in value or holding, and quite a bit cheaper that a turbo, with nice ones available for between 20-25K. My 993S is being sold soon to raise money for a project, but hope to get a 996 4S to replace it so that I still have some Pork! I will miss the 993 immensely for it's pure mechanical perfection and that classic 911 interior and lovely rear end, maybe I'll be in a position to buy another in the future :-(

@@brownpartnership11 - To be honest, if I had the money for a good 964, I am not sure I would have bought a 996. I love the 996, and it is clearly the better car in every measurable way, but some things are more about emotion. I do have a small family, and the 996 works quite well for us, so that is part of it. The air cooled cars definitely have more charm, but the 996 has really grown on me, it is just so good to drive, and I really like the lines of it, even the fried egg headlights. I personally prefer the slimmer lines and compact dimensions of the Carrera 2/4 to the 4S, but that is just me. Btw, if you get a pre-purchase inspection from Porsche or a good independent, I think a valid strategy is to upgrade the IMS along the way, and that is what I am doing.

The surfaces certainly need help, but you can't beat the South West roads for a good blast in a 911!
