Another video in our series exploring the various Porsche models produced over the years. This time we look at the 993 RS and see what they are like to drive. At the time of making this it was for sale with www.911virgin.com
Very much a driver's car the 993 RS was intended to offer a direct un-filtered experience. Designed for road use they lent themselves very well to people who enjoy track days.
A genuine 993 RS is a very expensive car these days, is there an alternative for someone on a more limited budget?

This car should have orange front and fender blinkers. Those clear ones aren't original. Oranges look SO MUCH better. Cheers. What a fantastic car!

As you are obviously well educated and cultured - hence the Porsche appreciation allow us to complete your transition. I think you are referencing the front wing of the car when you say "fender". A Fender is a cylindrical device used to cushion boats when coming alongside the dock or rafting off against another craft. Your fellow Americans will hold you in high esteem if you call a fender a wing, a hood a bonnet and a trunk a boot. Oh, and these things run on petrol. Gas is a gas not a liquid. I am of course joking with you so please don't be offended. 2 great nations divided by a common language.... 🙂

As an owner of a 993RS for 17 years, I enjoyed this video. Its value got too high to take round the race tracks so I swopped it for a GT4 (981) and kept the change. I’m sure I’ll regret it soon enough but for the time being, I enjoy the GT4.

The GT4 is a great car, we sold another one this week. You are right though, as values rise the cars get used less.

Thanks for this video. This is one of my favorite cars ever, both in terms of how it's designed to function and how it looks. Also, the 993 had some of the best paint colors available of any car, but an RS in Speed Yellow is my favorite.

Thanks for the comment. The 993 is indeed a great car that offers an awful lot to owners.

Thanks, Henry, I enjoyed that. FWIW, as a 993 RS owner for the last 16 years I agree with your comments. Mo Farah indeed!

Of all the Porsche's I love this body style the best. May even start looking for a 993 next year.

Very enjoyable to watch and share your enthusiasm. I’ve owned an ‘89 3.2 coupe for 17 years, recently fully restored and similarly I would relay the same passion. I also concur that the modern GT cars are just too super, to be as entertaining on UK roads, as these exquisitely honed icons.

The older cars certainly feel better balanced in terms of car / driver / road conditions for normal use. There's a great sense of occasion which makes you look forward to going somewhere.

@@911virgin8 Thanks. About 12 years ago I introduced a friend of mine to you guys and we bought from you, a lovely silver blue wide bodied 993 Carrera S. Being a purist, I never saw the point of the turbo look cars and felt a bit let down, that Porsche built them. But this car was a beauty. He took it to Australia where he now lives and still loves the car. He was over this weekend and he reminded me he paid just £32k for that car. It’s safe to say he’s not disappointed in any way with how it’s performed 😁
@911virgin8
@911virgin8 2 года назад
@@7litres The turbo look cars are visually appealing, I probably prefer the drive of a standard body car but that said there is so much difference between individual cars it comes down to the car on the day. We will gladly buy it back in for the full retail price paid..... :-) You can't say fairer than that !

Really enjoyed this. Be interested in a 964 RS vid and comparative thoughts if you could do one ! Only thing I would say is that some of the modern cars can still excite at road legal speeds. Manual 991.2 GT3 is one that does, I’d agree there are a lot that don’t though.
@911virgin8
@911virgin8 4 года назад
We have something a bit special planned for the 964 RS but it won't be for a while. We also plan to look at the whole business of modern cars, the enjoyment and reward v the car's technical ability and so on. We do sell a lot of newer cars, in fact more newer cars than older ones so we certainly don't look down on them, far from it. I guess we are, to some extent following a bit of a timeline at the moment in terms of model evolution although this will get disjointed as certain cars come into stock.

Great video Henry. As a Porsche fanatic, I really enjoy the way you convey the character of the car. Additionally, it’s great the way you contextualize the RS in relation to other variants of the 993 and its place in Porsche’s history. Somewhat like this 993 RS replica, I have a 964 C2 that I’ve modified to be a medley of RS America, RS & Cup car elements. I took it on track for the first time this Fall - what a blast. When I went to purchase track day insurance (US), the agent told me that in setting a value to insure the car, a rule of thumb is to add half of the cost of modifications to the value of the car in its stock form. Would you please consider doing a video from your vantage point on the valuation of modified Porsches. Also want to ask - do you know why the side edges of the wing are turned down on the 993 RS tail (as distinct from the ‘flat’ top surface of the RS America tail? Is there an aerodynamic advantage?
@911virgin8
@911virgin8 3 года назад
Thanks for the kind words ! Value of modified vehicles is a really tricky thing and I'm not sure you can apply any rules of thumb. Some things increase the value beyond their costs, others actually reduce the value and some stuff adds an incentive to purchase but no increase in value. Our experience allows us to gauge value based on current market and previous sales. Sometimes you just look at something and know. I guess if I get excited there's a fair chance someone else will because I'm not easily pleased and merely having a Porsche badge on the bonnet is no longer enough in it's self these days having bought and sold one or two cars. The RS America is a bit of a strange beast. Bar a small batch of cars that were going to race in the American Porsche Cup series which I don't think ever happened the cars were sort of softened for the road one offs. We don't ever see them here in the UK but when I've been in the US I've seen them with what looks like a 3.2 Carrera spoiler on them. Porsche do like raiding the parts bin when they can so whilst the 993 RS spoiler is mid 90's aero technology the 3.2 Carrera rear spoiler is early 80's technology.

Great looking recreation. I would like to know the real Rs components still not on this tribute. I can spot aftermarket radio that is not period correct, I doubt they have gone as far as a seam welded chasis, Would like to see that frunk opened up to see the liner and if ignition kill added there, as well as small washer bottle.

Hi there. I can forgive the stereo. Didn't even realise it was fitted with one to be honest, too busy listening to the mechanical soundtrack. You can see the battery cut off at 2.08 in the video.

Hmm. A 996 GT3 you say? Now there's a thought for this week. I think we may have a couple of cars that would do the job. I will see if I have a few moments spare to take yet another hit for the troops. Talk about suffering for one's art :-)

Thanks, that would be great! I have been spending rather too long looking at your stock recently and noticed the couple of cars you have. Would be interested to know how they stack up against the old air cooled cars from a feel and handling point of view on road. Are they really exploitable or the limits too high to really enjoy outside a track?

Hi there. I don't know specifically but would guess a 3.8l conversion, inlet manifold work, camshafts, possibly exhaust, re-mapping and so on. Unlike an American V8 trying to find power from a Porsche engine becomes very expensive and runs the risk of reducing longevity.
