LOVE MY CRAZY SHIRTS?
I'm a 911 fan, through and though - but my last experience of a turbo-powered Porsche was very disappointing. I drove the brand new 992, and it left me thoroughly cold. Today I'm driving a decade old 911 "Turbo" - from the first generation of 997. The old 996 turbo I couldn't fall in love with, but is this any better?

I remember when the last "Old School 911" was the 993 because it was the last air cooled, then the 964 because it has much of the "classic" body shell, then the 3.2 carrerra because it was the last 911 with a genuine link to the 1960's cars.

Excellent car, and make no mistake, it is viciously fast. More than likely substantially faster than anything else you have driven, unless you have a more modern turbo. I have a 455hp Camaro SS 1LE, and the 997.1 turbo will blow that thing into the weeds in a straight line.

Speaking of old school, I got to drive the original 3.3 Turbo 4-speed manual in the 80s in my late teens as a friend of mine's father had one and he used to let me drive it (crazy, I know). That really was the notorious one, lol. Crazy levels of lag, very much all or nothing, but really exciting when everything lit up. I have always though the 911 Turbo is the ultimate 'stealth' supercar. As you said, will give equal or better performance compared with any main manufacturer of supercars, yet is much more subtle and practical. I would be delighted to have one such as the one you're driving here.

VTG Turbos have been used before on a lot of Diesel Applications. It was new back then for petrol engines. That why it was kind of standing out technology when the car was new. Today most of the manufacturers go with the cheaper solution of the twin-scroll turbo. It`s also a good technology.

The 997. 1 the last analogue Porsche, all these mappable digital car coming out of Germany all sound synthetic and with loads of bhp. Speed is not important rather engine characteristics, drive and distinctive engine sound all take priority over bhp / speed. I love to drive a car and all these digital cars all computer aided that helps the driver. This 997 is the golden nugget of the Porsche mainly the naturally aspirated engines, reminds me of the beauty of the mechanical watch over a Quartz watch.

I'm a proud owner of a 2008 997.1 Turbo and I love the car. It's the last in the line of the Hans Mezger incredible 3.6L engines. In 2009 they went to a completely new design in a 3.8L engine... I recently had the opportunity to drive the 991 Turbo at a local dealer. While it's a spectacular car with a massive leap in technology, design, and comfort it felt way to big to be a 911. I didn't fully realize the size difference until I got back into my own car for the drive home. Of course I'd take a 991 if given to me, but I will gladly stick with my 997 with the hope that it appreciates in value over the next 10 years as many are predicting.

@@gabillionaireMany people consider the 997.2 as the sweet spot of the modern 911. Given the choice and the budget I’d go for a later model 997.2. The did a rear facia change starting in 2009 which much needed as the previous version went all the way back to around 2000 and the 996. Plus the 997.2 got PDK which is light years better than the Tiptronic of which I owned several. The 997.2 was also only around for two model years as the 991.1 came out in 2011. If you can find a 2010 997.2 in any model (Turbo always preferred by me) you will be very happy. They’re small, nimble, very fast, and very dependable. Good hunting!

I love this channel especially as I am one of the lucky (and smart) US car guys to own a Lotus 111R. My previous car was a 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo which I had for 32 years and Porsche was my brand. Now I doubt you could give me one. The last true Porsche was the 993.

you're very right Jay, the 997 GT3 gearbox can be reluctant, it almost makes the driver wonder if rushing a gear through is going to damage the synchros. It won't but I think it's a gearbox that probably takes serveral thousands of miles to fully bed in. The 997T is a great car, for looks I would just lower it a 10-15mm and put a duck-tail. The std liftable wing is just a bit lukewarm. And the side vents (also with the GT2) look a bit ugly IMO. Other than that it's an ace car and anyone should pick one up while they can.

Numeric cables and short shifter cure all 997 gearbox issues save for a stiff 1st gear in the cold.

Was just watching your other video on Patreon about dealers politely screwing around on customers, and the over-valuation of Porschae in general. As an owner ("the pricks are on the inside!"), I think there's no one I'd like to hear more from on this topic of Porsche and what's really on. I'd like to see you get your hands on the e-hybrid twin turbo performance variant Panamera as well as the Taycan but I tend to agree the 997 are the last I really see myself in.

I think the exhaust on this car is not stock, it´s a smooth modification and not straight into the face, it´s sound a bit like "luftgekühlt" in the mid and lower rev´s. Can you please tell me who made this exhaust?

Thinking of changing for a 2016 Boxster Spyder or grovelling to try to get a 718 Boxster Spyder allocation but highly unlikely. Interested in your opinion on the best Porsche model as a enjoyable replacement excluding GT3s.

Yeess maaate - that’s the 911 review we’ve been waiting for. Now you need to review one with a couple of mods thrown at it... 600hp is an utter barrel of laughs in one of these!
@computerhelpcc
@computerhelpcc 4 года назад
mod it and make it worse, delude yourself in process you made it better until 2-3 yrs later you put it back to stock and discover that was best after all. Plenty of basic maintenance to spend your money on as hoses and bushes have to be replaced
@Gr0t0tter
@Gr0t0tter 4 года назад
Nonsense... The stock 997 Turbo exhaust is too quiet, and the chassis + drivetrain are more than capable of handling an additional 120+ hp without in any way sacrificing comfort or changing the character of the car for the worse. A few well chosen engine mods will not only add torque & power, but will even drop the boost threshold RPM, making for a more driveable car in day-to-day conditions.
@computerhelpcc
@computerhelpcc 4 года назад
Many a car guy, Matt Farah for example, have commented on mods that were not improvements. Exhaust, I understand. I ordered the Fister modification ( PSE in permanent mode) for my 996.1 and at first I regretted it although after 6 months I loved the extra sound at 3k although hearing the variocam at 5k was harder. I’ve seen more 911 Turbos made worse than improved though. Admittedly, I am not a Turbo fan as the launch into Hyperspace tends to overshadow all the other virtues of the 911

My problem w Porsche’s and including 996 isn’t the gear shift and needing a short shifter. It’s that the clutch pedal has to travel from here to Kentucky to release. That slows shifts more than anything on these cars

Always disliked the wheels on these. I am a big fan of the 'lobster claws', though (had no idea they were called that). Oh, and the exhaust tips - never liked those (keep 'em round I say - this new fad is just yeeeuch). But those really are the most minor criticisms of what is such a desirable car.

At least the exhausts are real. Integrating the tips into the bumper instead of hanging them underneath is actually technically difficult and the reason why so many cars these days have fake tips with the real exhaust inside. Not so here

If you like the Metzger engine, you want the 2009 911 Turbo. The reason? MY2009 was the only year that the 997.2 had this engine so you get the updated interior and you still have this engine. BTW, a manual 2009 911 Turbo is in the $70-80,000 range in the US the last time I checked. But a manual F430 is in an altogether different zip code. Saw a nice one go for close to $200,000 at an auction just in the past month. It did have really low miles, but still a LOT of money for a 15 year old car!
@SenszR
@SenszR 4 года назад
Really? Where did you find that out?
@claudedickson9859
@claudedickson9859 4 года назад
SenszR Do some research. The 997.2 was more than the usual mid-cycle refresh. With the introduction of the 997.2 in 2009, PDK was first offered and a new direct injection engine (DFI) was introduced as well as interior updates with Bluetooth and hard drive navigation. The 2009 turbo, however, did not get the new engine until the following year (2010).
