Indeed. This is the stuff that got me into Top Gear, in the Tiff days (I was quite young). Don't have to be daft to allow humour in car news & reviews. Good point, that hadn't really occurred to me (probably won't be able to 'not see it' for while now - I'm less thankful should that occur. :)
+soundslave lol here come the 'intellectual' elitists; i watch both shows for what they are (gt & fullycharged), and they're both entertaining/informative; no need to be a childish edgelord
K mate. I just remember the decent Top Gear before it was dumbed down. Compare early Jezza, May and Hammond to today. It is ghastly how far they've devolved.
The quality of your reviews is unbelievable. The visuals as well as the casual but very professional infotainment style. But since I am a nitpicking German: The e in "Porsche" isn't silent ("Porsh-uh").
+Henrik Wallin Just type "about:config" into firefox, accept the terms, search for "copy" and change the variable that mentions "clipboard" to "false". Afterwards you *can* copy/paste into youtube on firefox.
Jeremy Schmidt lets say I had the money to spend. 15 mins ago I would have said Tesla without a doubt. But this is a very impressive looking car. More so than the model S. It has made me think....
R I don't like the idea of a plug-in hybrid in general; too much complexity. You basically have all of the downsides of both drive trains. That's the only thing that really turns me away from the Panamera. There is lot to love about it, definitely more luxurious and in certain ways even more advanced than Tesla.
Jeremy Schmidt I agree. Generally I'm not a fan of hybrids as they are half measures and I'd rather a full electric. Still, at least this car can be driven at low speeds in a town or city without polluting the streets. Better than nothing. At least until driving a petrol car is as socially unacceptable as smoking say.
R Hopefully the Porsche Mission E (I guess it's the "Taycan" now...) will be as nice as Panamera. And surely Tesla will improve their interior. At any rate I'm sure we'll have plenty of really great EVs coming in a few years. Until then this is a good transition vehicle.
at least in germany the 100D is more slightly more expensive and the only lower model you can choose is the 75D which would be up there if you could still choose the "P"... maybe that's where he's coming from.. but i think there is more than 1 flaw in this comparison.. :D
I have the unofficial P75D or 75DU as it's been called, it's the older 75D with the extra 95hp 'uncorked'... this free upgrade was introduced to most of the older 75D cars where possible when the 0-60 dropped from 5.2 to 4.2 on new 75Ds Officially it's just a 75D
The best of both worlds. Actual handling finesse, driver enjoyment outside of a straight line, German build quality, a satisfying noise - but quiet relaxing when it needs to be, all backed up with an extensive network of fuelling stations. Wonderful.
Good review. To those scorning it, remember we need to work to get all drivers on board to effectively change the world. Cars like this allow people to take baby steps into the EV world. Today I drive a plug-in hybrid because I often have to take long trips on Texas highways which still lack charging stations. My Leaf could never make those trips. This new Porsche is a helpful step on the road to full electrification, if a bit of a silly waste of cash.
I actually bought this exact car. I previously had a Tesla Model S that was written off by a Kia jumping a red light. I did 120,000 in the Tesla. Different beasts but Porsche is so much better quality fit and finish. Tech is better in the Porsche with Innovate and in the 20k I have driven it in 5 months it has been more reliable than my Tesla. I do miss the instant torque of the S. I did a round trip from South Wales to Horsham in West Sussex. It was more tiring in the Porsche but only because it would take a couple of hours charging the Tesla so I would be more rested lol
I think plug-in hybrids are the perfect combination right now (the future is fully electric of course). I could commute fully electric and have long distance trips in hybrid mode. I won't wake up my neighbours in the morning when I go to work early and I don't pollute where people live.
Plug in hybrids with decent daily drive ranges are the future. BEVs will remain a niche, for applications where you essentially never have to drive it long distance, or in the smaller luxury market. Mass market will be dominated by mild hybrids and PHEVs.
It hurts like hell to hear "porsch". Please stop that. That doesn´t do your review justice. Just say Porsche and I´m happy. ;) Otherwise I really like your videos, they are always fun to watch. Keep on the good work. Been following you since the good old 5th gear days.
This is why I think Fully Charged is so great. Its not binary, it looks at all the options out there. Well done on another great review and on a very succesful Fully Charged Live weekend.
Its interesting that many who review EVs and Hybrids "always" end up advertising or talking about the Tesla EV, doesn't that make other manufacturers angry especially if they have offered you a free ride for you to review?
I know y'all EV purists think this is inferior simply because it's not a pure EV, but in my opinion a proper PHEV is just a better car in any scenario overall. This could use 10-15 extra battery miles per charge, but other than that it's perfect.
SDD525 he's just saying the video wasn't changed to reflect the new name because it takes so long between filming and production of their videos. He wasn't saying the name was weird or bad...
SDD525 err... I'm half Dutch, lived there fifteen years, speak fluently... Never heard that name before. In fact it sounds very NOT Dutch! Edit: it's Turkish (for a lively young horse, according to CNN).
Embarrassment on ice..I was hesitant to watch that video because a hybrid Porsche is a joke. The hybrid only helps in acceleration. That's its only purpose.
The quality of this review is astonishing... You absolutely couldn't do it better. I have nothing but praises and compliments, and I'm a tough customer :D Jonny, thank you . Astonishing.
I have 2 dream cars one is Tesla and the other one is Panamera. Best cars in the world for me. Tesla for tech like autopilot and speed and panamera for luxury and speed.
Great review. Your brain is wired the same as mine. Love driving too and from work EV then finding a B road with no cameras or traffic and listening to the engine. So pleased to own this and other last of dinosaurs. The build quality is perfect. I'm not a dreamer I had a real choice between tesla and Porsche. Easy to slag off either from your armchair without ever having a hope in hell of owning either. The tesla was great fun for an hour but the Panamera puts a smile on your face every day and even my electric loving friends just love the looks build quality and yes the sound of that engine.
beautiful car and video... but everytime I see a plug-in hybrid, it feels like they are outdated already since we know from Tesla and others what can be done today
This looks like a car that was designed by a committee. It's neither here nor there. Who tf wants a four door "sports car"? And the "executive edition"?, what a joke; anyone wealthy enough to have a chauffeur, doesn't want to sit behind someone else driving a roadster, they are going to buy a proper automobile like a Bentley, or a Benz, not sit cramped in the back, like some full grown toddler. This thing isn't a hybrid, it's a mutant! PASS. go ev, or go away! - In twenty years, people will look at this car, and go, - why?....
I like the executive. Think about if you want to go on a road trip and take more than one friend with you, they now have a nice comfortable place to sit in the back, and you can still carve corners when you happen across a nice road. It's a great car for a lot of different things. Also, the back of these cars is surprisingly spacious, especially the executive edition, after all the Boss of Porsche is 6'6" and he made it a requirement that he had to fit comfortably in the back. Sure it's not as luxurious as a Bentley Mulsanne or a Rolls Royce Ghost. And sure it doesn't handle quite as well as a 911, but as an all around nice car it's hard to beat.
A great review which covers the essentials. It's interesting the way this car polarises opinions. Its Eco credentials are certainly weaker than a pure EV (or a bicycle) but it's not all doom and gloom. I'm lucky enough to own the even less eco-friendly Turbo S Sport Turismo (dog friendly) variant with a combined 680 hp but I can report that in daily local use it barely sips petrol, sometimes using none at all. As I recharge from my solar PV rig that makes it pretty green purely in fuel consumption terms. Not so green perhaps when you factor in the CO2 footprint incurred in manufacture but that's a criticism one could possibly level at most cars. But the Panamera is extremely well engineered so the longevity offsets to a degree. The fuel consumption is rather different for very long journeys where the battery contributes only a small percentage to the range and so is reduced to just increasing efficiency. I'll duck now to avoid the flying brickbats when I 'fess up to 30 mpg with sensible driving!!! Timing is everything and in another 15 years when I'm ready to trade the car in there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that I'll be getting a pure EV but this time around please accept that for some of the uses to which I put my car the infrastructure isn't quite there yet. I wish it was but it isn't. Regarding the wider points raised in the review, Johnny is absolutely right: the Panamera e-Hybrid is incredibly refined and an absolute delight to drive although I'd strongly suggest avoiding playing with the touch screen while driving, at least until one is very familiar with the menus, as it can be extremely distracting. The first service is at 2 years/20,000 miles, whichever comes first, so there's even time for the bank balance to recover a little... :)
I used to love the look of the Rover 2000 cars of the 80s. The long low streamlined look. They're quite dated now, but any new car that reminds me of that shape, like this guy, has my vote.
I really need to sort out cancelling my tv license and putting it all into FC patreon. Jonny you are easily the most stylish motoring journalist, even in double denim.
If you are going to have a sports car that is both ICE and EV powered, at least make the electric motor launch the car at something like the speed of a Tesla. Is there even any point in having the electric motor assist the engine with launch? Imagine a Tesla motor with ludicrous mode and a engine like this working together. Electric motor takes it up the 100 while the engine is speeding up and then the drive train get engaged for the engine and carries on propelling it. EV's are best for initial speed but start to peter out at about 100, and engines are the opposite.
Obviously Porsche know how to make a car, but the colour.. Yeuch. I always feel like those colours are subtle jokes by the designers poking fun at the 'boring' people they imagine buying hybrids. Why can't they make a 911 sized EV in orange? (Yes, I'm sure Porsche will do any colour you want)
Nice car but the battery is way too small for the weight of the car plus petrol engines are thirsty especially carrying a dead useless battery! Just go green(tesla) or just have a loud sound(porsche). Combining the 2 is a total compromise! Sorry for being naughty 😂
I will enjoy the "Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid", commuting 24 miles round trip from my house to the office, driving from stop sign to stop sign, stoplight to stoplight, bumper to bumper on the tollway looking for the exit. >:)
It's funny, because the sportscar aspect and the spirited driving, that's actually where I was disappointed in the Panamera 4 E-hybrid when I test drove it. I love the way it looks, at least the new generation, I love the interior and the luxurious feeling of the cabin (although the front seats were are bit of a disappointment). But I just found it so sluggish, and heavy feeling compared to a Model S. I didn't find it anywhere near as spritely, it didn't turn in as eagerly, and it wasn't as easy to rotate slightly through turns using the accelerator as the AWD Model S is. Even in Sport+, I thought it was pretty boring to drive. The ride was much, much more comfortable and refined than in the Tesla, though. So my take is actually that if you want to drive actively and want a sporty car, get the Tesla. If you want something luxurious and very comfortable with the latest non-EV technology, and don't care about being able to get far on electricity alone, get the Panamera. But to me, the Panamera felt outdated. The interface and all the buttons almost made me panic (and I am a programmer, so I should be used to technical interfaces!). Also, I thought the drivetrain and brakes were very uneven. Acceleration from a standstill was uneven and jerky (and felt slightly slower than the Model S 85D I had at the time), and the braking was even more uneven. The implementation of regen braking on the braking pedal was just not good. Some times I stopped way before the car ahead of me at traffic lights, while other times I nearly hit it. I had expected to love the Panamera, but overall I was actually quite disappointed. I've been spoiled by Tesla. I would never choose the Panamera over a Tesla (and the sales figures clearly say I'm not alone in this).
The Best thing about the Panamera was the trick rear spoiler... and now they have ditched it for this simple flap spoiler. Not a wise move Porsche.. Bring back the old panamera spoiler.
watching this scares me while you playing with the buttons, your spending far too much time with your eyes away from where your going. I know you like stats. So while watching the drive review from what I could see you spent near 1 min 24 seconds NOT looking at the road. How about putting the review camera where your suppose to look at.. The road not us :) You can then look at us without taking your eyes off the road and make me feel safe. Cool video and love the channel.
didn't expect to hear those exhaust notes on fullycharged, especially the lot of emphasis that was put on it. It hurts the actual theme of this channel and the movement. I understand the 'sporty macho' feeling, but it's time we got over it. I used to ride a bike with loud thumps once, but I sold it and ride a quieter and more fuel efficient one now. But, even then I don't like it because everytime I ride it, I know that I am spewing some death gas into the atmosphere. I am from India, and we don't have much EV option here yet. But, as soon as I get my hands on one, I am gonna sell my petrol bike. It's just nostalgia and old habit and it should die hard for good, because we know objectively that ICE cars are killing us and the planet and everything on it.
Nice work Jonny! I do like your reviews very much... but the last few I have seen, seem to be a little hash on Tesla! Why!? I can understand the bias when it comes to Jaguar ;-) The electric car industry would not be where it is today without Tesla. If it wasn`t for their great foresight and effort, the `main` manufacturers would not be serious on EV`s yet… We now see billions invested! Tip your hat to them whenever you can:-) Criticise the companies that do nothing! Note - I`m not affiliated with Tesla, just admire them…I don`t yet own an EV, soon though…. Cheers mate.
Apologizes in advance but that's NOT true. Please don't tell that lie. I'm a Porshe fanatic. The Porsche 918 is their first marketed hybrid supercar. The Porsche Cayenne e-hybrid is the 2nd car and the Panamera is the third. Do your homework! Jonny, you are lucky you're hot.
Can you get a 7.2kw home charger? Poor packaging of the power cables which robs a limited boot space. Prefer to see focus on overtaking speed than 0-60. Like all these mild hybrids, the EV distance is poor so its a hybrid without much range. Might Porsche done better by spending the hybrid bits and cut the weight with more expensive but lighter materials - carbon fibre, aluminium etc.
I like Porsche.. I’ve liked the Panamera especially, since it debuted.. but I wouldn’t trade my model S 100D for any model of a panamera currently on offer, or the EV Taycan version to come.. they have 0 improvements on a Tesla that are useful to me.. I’m not going to take it on a track and make it race to its max for extended periods.. that’s about the only place I expect the Taycan to be an improvement on an S.. and styling is purely a personal taste thing.. as much as I like the interiors of panameras.. I am loving the minimalist interior more. All the manufacturing quality issues I think are a red herring.. I’ve had all makers of German cars.. not one of them was noticeably better than my Tesla. If you’re super anal about it, I’m sure you could find issues.. but I could find issues on every car I’ve ever owned at every level. Not to mention.. VW group is currently on my sh.. list of I will NOT be a patron of their products, or any proven diesel cheaters, for a long time to come
Still not what I would call pretty. It isn't exactly efficient either, in reality less than two miles per kWh of electricity, 14 kwh gives my Zoe about 62 mikes of range, admittedly not the same class of car but still surprisingly heavy. I guess I am still not sold on the ideas of plug in hybrids, I suspect an efficient petrol would use less fuel for most people given this isn't really a car for short commutes. Looking forward to the Mission E though.
Anyone else feel a bit working class when it comes to EV's? No way I can even dream of owning an EV. Don't get me wrong I'd love to but it's all out of my price range. My price range is £500. The car dies I find another one for around £500.
I don't care how nice the seats are, you couldn't PAY me to look at that garbage pile of buttons and listen to that exhaust (which sounds like a lawnmower in serious need of maintenance) on a daily basis. It may be a driver's car but it's still a pretty pathetic effort at a "greener" Porsche. Seriously, people complain about Tesla screens and their potential for causing driver distraction, but I bet Johnny spent 2/3 of the review looking away.
It looks good and all. But the plug in side of it here seems like an excuse to put themselves on the “we make green Cars as the government makes us do in some countries”. And again it’s another expensive car that is for 1% of the population. I like how you didn’t show it reaching 60 in elaunch mode, would probably make the viewers fall asleep seeing how slow a Porsche can accelerate. Just not a fan of this car... I would be if I earned like 150 grand a year which I don’t
It sounds weird how you pronounce Porsche. Here's a video from porsche themselves how to pronounce it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Im2eYuGdmfY.html Johnny pronounced it sometimes correctly - always when he used the plural: porsches. Now for "Porsche" in singular you just have to leave the s out. Apart from that - nice video!
Well, at least they're trying to bring the Squashed Frog into the 21st Century. They still look ugly, and even if someone _gave_ me a hybrid, I would sell it straight away, and upgrade to a better-looking all-electric car..
GREAT review! However, Porsche should have made the leap towards full electrification of certain models a long time ago. I would choose a Tesla Model S over this Porsche Hybrid anytime. As a Tesla guy, I really do love that Panamera interior - but a nice interior is not enough to make a great car.
I don't know. I don't subscribe to Fully Charged to listen to exhaust pipes. It is a great car, don't get me wrong but it is just a PHEV. I like the initiatives from Porsche in this area but it's not worth a 20 min video on this channel.
We need Porsche's new Super charger so we don't need to have a huge battery in the car. Carrying big battery is a waste of resource. All we need is 100 mile range and charge it full in 10 minutes. Also needs to be more available like gas (petro) stations. I live in the city and don't even need 100 mile range. This Porsche is perfect for my needs. Who wants to own a Tesla that has a low build quality. A Mazda is better build.
Ha ha! Sorry hybrid lovers. The Porsche loyalists will completely reject this car as they did the base Panamera. I'd consider leasing this car, or wait until it comes off lease as the price then will be more in line with reality. But you've really got to be a hybrid lover. Thanks Jonny - love your reviews.
Like the review, but not so much that Johnny clearly is biased towards Europe manufacturers. This is very clear in the I-Pace review and also in this one. I've driven both new Teslas and this Panamera and I don't agree at all that the Tesla interior is worse. Each to their own, but I got away liking the Tesla interior more for all it's innovations and the minimalistic style. Also the seats to my body is nicer in the Tesla so saying this is also just strange. Regarding charging port, the Tesla has the by far most elegant solution in the industry, and the fact that Johnny doesn't even mention this when comparing just shows that he don't want to speak positive about Tesla. Get the feeling that Johnny is trying to be very kind in this Porsche review to keep a good relationship with Porsche and be invited to future car presentations and testing their cars and having paid tickets and free lunch. I understand this, but it shines through a bit much and doesn't cater for a objective review. Also it is very clear that Johnny doesn't know Tesla very well.
Just a crotchety (35) old man now I guess, every time those obnoxious loud tuned sports cars or trucks or motorcycles or any kind of ICEers scream by my house and wake up the children it really ticks me off. It's fine if the person driving likes the sound of the revving engine but the rest of the world doesn't have to hear it either. Same idea with smoking in restaurants and such. Don't care if you smoke but I don't want to pay any of the health care costs and or have to breathe it in myself so if you're going to drive an obnoxiously loud combustion chamber vehicle do it somewhere where I can hear it and I don't have to breathe that nasty air
I didn't understand it when you said that your brain was wired like this Porsche. That would be a great compliment if you were a AI robot. (Hmm, your secret is out). Did you mean to say, it drives very intuitively?
Too expensive for normal working folk another rich persons plaything, a little aygo is vastly more realistic for everyday driving 60 plus mpg very low purchase price if you cover 3000 miles a year what's the point of ev's especially very very expensive ones?
Pleanty of us EV fans sill love the sound of our old Petrol Engines, but accept they are a thing of the past. For me a two stroke motorcycle screeeeeeaming at 10,000rpm was the ultimate. An absolute riot!
Spend the whole review comparing it to a Model S and then finish off saying you can't compare it to a Model S? I tried one of these and got sub 20mpg on easy A road driving, maybe an aspect worth mentioning on this channel? Mid range performance wasn't great either, nothing compared to EV response..
Very pleasant to listen and watch. But: you should’ve gone more in depth on the technical aspect of the hybrid system. And of course mileage also... as said in other comments, wh/km is just idiotic.
The e-golf doesn’t have a chargeport in the front, the Golf GTE (as well as the Passat GTE) does though. I’m guessing that it’s cheaper for manufacturers to put the chargeport where the petrol filler cap otherwise is on pure battery electric vehicles.
How can you compare this to a model s. The model s is so below this in everything from technology to quality to engineering. That means the model s is unbelievably overpriced. It makes this look like a bargain.
One of the reasons I prefer a Porsche rather than a Tesla is the quality of that interior. Not saying that the Tesla's interior is bad, but the fit and finish of all of the components inside Porsche's cars is something else. Looking forward to the review of the Panamera Turbo S E-hybrid.
Love love love this channel... but please please stop admiting doing 70mph on a 60mph road and cutting across a solid white line. Law is law, please dont get into trouble for bringing us amazing content!!
