Porsche's Tiptronic gearbox as often derided as being a distant second-choice to a six-speed manual transmission for the 996 and 997-generation 911. But with many thousands of examples available worldwide, is a 911 with Tiptronic transmission really that bad?! I take a Porsche 996 Targa for a real-world road test and reveal every stat you need to know about the 911's automatic gearbox for the early Millennium era. Are you a fan of the Tiptronic gearbox? Do you think it's underrated?
Thanks to Paragon Porsche for the loan of this exquisite, low-mileage 996 Targa example. Paragon's full stock can be viewed on the 9WERKS Marketplace or by visiting paragongb.com.

I love my 996.2 C2 tiptronic. It’s not a daily and I drive it hard. I never really got on with the buttons so I replaced the steering wheel with a manual wheel fitted with Mercedes AMG paddles. I now drive it in manual mode 99% of the time using the paddles. It’s not a rapid gear change but if anticipated well, it’s great. Get into traffic and slot it back into D. I can’t grumble

I procrastinated doing that same mod .. then came to appreciate the buttons .. upshift or downshift with either hand, I now like it. Also, I have a 996 Turbo, which doesn't use 1st gear (unless it's really cold).. and all somewhat legal spirited driving is all in 2nd gear and some 3rd .. there isn't much shifting to do with the wide 600ft-lb modded torque band of the turbo motor... so the shift lag isn't much of a downer.

My theory is that it is the Tiptronic owners (like myself) that put out the rumor that they suck in order to keep resale lower so we can continue to buy them! The Tip in my 997 turbo is great.

The truth is most commenters have never and will never own a Porsche. Others act like they live to track their cars and very very few people actually do. An even smaller number of folks do occasionally track their cars, but completely lack the skill to outdrive a Trip with a manually car. Then there are the 0.1% that can afford, do track, and can drive and the few guys I know that fit that profile think the Trip is an excellent transmission.

I got both 996 Turbo tiptronic and 996 4S manual and I prefer tip. Maybe I've gotten older, or maybe I just don't expect the 20yo car to break fractions of a second, but these days I'm simply more comfortable using an automatic. 7:52 is what I also feel, not only in heavy traffic..

To have the chance to use the same car for almost 10 years, I confirm what you say. Initially, it allowed me to take control of this legend, without apprehension. Subsequently, this gearbox was able to respond to all situations: highway, city, secondary roads and even a lap on the circuit, once. The metre displays 250,000 kilometres and believe me, it’s not about to stop. Thank you for publishing this video to rehabilitate Tiptronic.

At last a proper review of the Tiptronic. Really good to drive. Change down 2 or 3 gears with a slight twitch of the wrist! All this 'internet wisdom'. Oh you don't want a Tiptronic! Oh my god, you don't want x,y or z! IMS bearing...a disaster. The RMS...help! Oh those horrible headlights, etc, etc, etc.🤣

I had a 987 Cayman tip '05 for about 7 years. I loved everything about the car apart from the gearbox. Downshifting into a corner, you never knew exactly when the shift was going to happen. It probably varied only by a tiny amount, but... I replaced it with another 987 manual, and I am a lot happier.

Thanks Lee. I’ve said it many times re tip’: you will NOT get the best from any tiptronic on a quick test drive. It takes several miles & a degree of enthusiasm to get the best from the ‘box. Generally, the 986/996 buttons are less ‘intuitive’ than 987/997 buttons, but we’re all different. The 4-speed tip’ in the 964 works ok, the stubby selector lever is brilliant. The only real ‘problem’ is the big gap between ratios - closer ratios & a 5th ‘speed’ would be nice. Worth also noting that many pundits recommend using ‘first’ from standstill on any 986-997 tip’ that’s warm/hot to avoid labouring the engine and giving you an edge in the war against bore-score. An old leg injury stops me using a clutch, thus between me & her we run a 964 Carrera 2, a 986S & a 997 Carrera S all with tip’ gearboxes & get on with ‘em ok.

Thanks for this really useful video Lee. I have a 993 C2S with Tip S, and over the years have learned to both heel and toe and blip the throttle. It sounds strange but it works really well. It's all about timing of course, but if you time it right it adds a nice dimension to your driving experience. There are quite a few other little tips and tricks to the tiptronic that you tend to pick up over time. Little things like (in a 993) leave it in gear 3 around town and it will always start off in first. Tap the throttle rapidly (say going up a hill) and it will change down a gear (as opposed to burying it and going down 2 gears).

Good review. I have a C4 and the tip saved my life. Mid overtake of a cyclist when a van came round the corner towards me. I instinctively mashed the throttle and at lightning speed, the car jumped down to 1st and i was well clear of the cyclist before the van even got close to me. Nobody could done the same in a manual car - not even close. Life saver.

I have a 2009 997 Turbo with the Tiptronic S, the last year of the Mezger engine. I think the Tiptronic works quite well with the turbo in particular. It keeps the turbos spooled all the way up through the shifts, so it is like an almost constant wave of torque. The problem is I RARELY get to do that as the car is fast enough to hit felony level speeds in just a few seconds--you have to be mindful and respectful of the power and of the other drivers on the road. I live in the Metro DC area and the traffic here is often abysmal, so I can just throw it in drive and deal with the traffic comfortably. When I get out of the city, I like to put it in Sport mode and row the gears with the steering wheel rockers. It shifts quite quickly and is quite fun. I did the filter, fluid, gasket and the differential fluid changes just this month (Feb 2023) at 87,000 miles. It has been 100% reliable and the car makes me smile every time I take it out of the garage!

Another great video Lee. Good to see a proper review of the tip in current day. Didn’t know the .1 and .2 gearboxes were so different. So it’s good to learn from this. I expect the 3.6 will also be more suited with its extra torque compared with 3.4. As you say it just opens the car to more people with different lifestyles. Something for everyone 👍

Great video Lee at last someone else gets the tiptronic. Absolutely love my 996.2 c4 tip! So much fun and ever so easy when in traffic especially when stuck in town or on the motorway. From what I've learnt with mine is that it uses fuzzy logic to learn your style and changes down on brakeing and holds gears through corners with the help of 'g' sensors passing pitch and roll data to control module. And lastly hill hold is the best, press brake pedal and just relax, then floor it when the lights change 😉🦆🍳

This video is what landed me in the car that was just delivered a few days ago - 997.1 Turbo with the Tiptronic. I plan to daily it as long as the weather holds and having owned manual cars before, didn't want the labor involved with driving around town. PDK being the huge leap forward it is, commanded a $15-20K premium. So to everyone who talked down on Tip, thank you in an odd sense, because it drove the price down on a magnificent 911 that I will thoroughly enjoy for a very long time.

Another very good review from 9WERKS and I have learned some new things! I have a 996.2 C4S and I find the Tip trans is okay - it's not bad, but not great either. What would have made it more fun and actually good is having a manual shift option on the gear selector, paddle shifters instead of thumbshifters (though I do like the option of being able to shift anyway with either thumb), and for me I would prefer the Tip to always start automatically in first gear instead of second gear, especially in manual mode. Unlike my 981 Cayman with PDK, which is usually in manual mode and shifting through 6 gears (1-7), I'm normally in automatic in the C4S because the Tip is just meh and I'm usually only shifting through 3 gears (2-5). I was thinking about doing the MB paddleshifter mod, but I don't think it will make the car more fun to me. I'll probably add a Sprint Booster to make the throttle more responsive and fun!

Totally agree with you Lee. Tips are great, just depends on what you use the car for. I had a tip Cayenne as a daily some years ago and found it absolutely fine to use. Just required the occasional override of the computers chosen gear but otherwise using the steering wheel buttons quickly became second nature and I really enjoyed the character of the box. Prefer my manual 996 for spirited driving but I reckon a tip turbo 996 would make great all round option.

Thanks Lee, another balanced and informed video. have driven both manual and tip and would surmise that they are just different; both have their merits and some things to choose one over the other on. Drove the 996 C4S Tip for 11 years. Fantastic. Think one of the key factors of why people dislike the tiptronic, or at least 'slate' it, is that they simply have not put enough hours and miles down on using a tip - or haven't driven it at all. It takes a bit of time to get used to. My right rocker gets all the action, plus my hands are firmly on the steering wheel on track days. Now, move fwd to a 996 turbo tip (only 26k on the clock...!) - am 'very' glad to be able to keep both hands on the steering wheel - and get huge amounts out of this supercar. ps never knew that about cold 1st, nor the two reverse gears; the former would explain the slap I sometimes got on a cold start and would emphasise to anyone with a 996 to get the transmission fluid changed in the box if it hasn't been done. So much smoother afterwards on these 25 year old icons. Thanks Lee - great video and straightforward.

I have two VW wagons/estates/variants with Tiptronic transmissions, and I am delighted with both. Some owners complain that the 6-speed transmission on the 2016 Golf hunts between 2nd and 3rd gear when driving 25mph/40kph, as one would in a typical residential or business district in the US. Putting the transmission in manual mode solves the problem. For me, the steering wheel paddle shifters took a little getting used to, since the only option on the 2001 Passat was to use the gear lever, but I do like having the choice.

I have the 5sp ZF in an E39. I'd take it in a Porker over a manual every day because I don't track it 😎 Put it in sport it'll drop a cog (usually 4th) then for a low speed overtake double tab to drop it into 2nd or single for a high speed overtake. Never fails. If you want to use kickdown it may drop to the top of the rev range in a lower gear which I'd normally not do, manual selection for overtakes is a bit more predictable.

The TIP in a tuned / modified 996turbo is a wonderful pair. I'm not sure I would like it in the lesser powered cars as the joy of driving a car closer to its limit with a manual is a real treat. But when you start adding in road eating power... having the aid of the TCU shifting gears etc. is appreciated. I will add, a higher stall torque converter can really change the dynamic and add some extra excitement to the boosted engines.

When I was shopping for a 996 Turbo, I *only* considered the tiptronic. I spend more than half my driving time in traffic and it's much more relaxing to drive an auto. And when I'm on the open road, it is fine for dropping down a gear. If I was doing a lot of trackdays (not been on a track in years) then sure, but for negotiating corners and country roads, it's fine. In fact, I'm at a point in my life where I just can't be arsed to manually change a gear. If it's not at the optimum revs, it really doesn't matter. Sure, I don't get as much power, but I still get more of it as it's downshifted automatically.

Totally relate to your experience in this vid. I use to downshift overriding the computer often. What I’d do diff? 1) be a 6 gears instead of 5. Would love to have a shorter 2nd and 3rd gears; and 2) be able to shift using the stick. The buttons are great, but could be both controls. Any how, it’s a great starter Porsche. I really like the Tiptronic in my gen.2 C4S, I believe it is unfairly maligned. A clunky change can be down to worn mountings. No its not as good as a PDK or indeed the 8 speed ZF in one of my cars, which interestingly uses a torque converter.

Sport-O-Matic is a clutchless manual. It can not change gears by itself. It’s a shame Porsche didn’t offer these with the 964 Carrera 4.

I actively searched for a tip. Friend of mine had a 996 c2 manual and let me drive it, decided on that drive I had to have a 996, but didn’t like how heavy the clutch felt having had a Saab aero tip in the past new how good that gearbox can be. Had are 996.1 c2 for 7 years now love her as much now as the day we bought her manual mode for sported driving auto for cruising/urban what’s not to like

Just to add been on a few Porsche days out in convoy, with other 996s, never felt we couldn’t keep up, felt gear change to gear change we were aligned with the other manual cars, once the mass is moved of the line and the torque converter has done its work i don’t think there is much difference between manual and Tip agree off the line there is a small difference but that isn’t real world driving.

There is a stunning PTS viola with natural tan interior (or similar) C4S Tip on marketplace at the moment. I wouldn't usually consider a Tip but it doesn't seem too bad and in a killer spec would be hard to ignore.

Everyone is different (thankfully!) but personally I love changing up through the gears and heel and toeing down on my manual, you can’t beat a manual for immersive driving (IMHO)

The real reason people rag on about tiptronic/automatic (even PDK) 911 is because if you're in traffic, in the city often, or doing boring driving work why not have a boring / automatic car? A Tesla MYP would be a better choice for that. A 911 is supposed to be an engaging driver's car which the manual option offers more of an experience of. I drove a PDK 997.2 turbo S and not only was the PDK annoying to use due to the weird wheel buttons but also the 4 wheel drive led to understeer.

How much does the car actually “learn” your driving style. Or is there a aftermarket part that can be modified to really achieve that?

It seems fine However. I dont like the shifter being in the front of the steerung wheel id rather it was on the bacj side or on the gear selecter like on my Toyota.

I'd say this video has confirmed it is exactly what I thought it was - an old slushbox. Nowadays you can have your cake and eat it, but back then it's simply slower and less responsive. And yes, it wouldn't be criticised in a 7-Series, but it's a fair criticism in a 2 door sports car. The big difference between it and modern boxes is it has no clutch system to rev match and it doesn't respond to your input with the toggles (and you don't get paddles). So for me, if you must have an automatic and you must have a 996 911, fine whatever, otherwise cars like M3 DCT or the manual 996 are just better for the purpose of sporty driving.

You always get a like from me 🙂 Even this time, when I strongly disagree. Being nowhere near as bad as the common perception tells us is simply not enough. Tiptronic may be mechanically sound, I believe that. But it takes away much (read MUUUUUUCH) to much of the mechanical and precise feel and control of a 996 stick shift. I can live with a rear wiper. Maybe I could even live with a targa (well... no, Targa is also a no-no I would say) or with 4WD... but Tiptronic simply does not work for me in a 996. Still good content - Like!

Great to see you getting involved and thanks for sharing your opinion! In regards to Tiptronic, 4WD, rear wipers and Targas, it's a case of different strokes for different folks, and thankfully Porsche makes a car for us all!

Draining a gearbox is not enough, it needs to be rinsed. There is special equipment like from Mahle which adds fresh oil and pushes the old fluid out. The mashine has two glas pipes where you can see the new fluid going in and the dirty oil going out. All is done, when both tubes show the same colour. Needless to say, that filter and gasket needs changing, too.

“Not particularly a high performance gearbox” This is true; manual is more fun and PDK slaps both of them in performance. My 996tt is tiptronic and I love it because of the versatility. I have a TON of fun on track, and I can still drive in in horrid Chicago traffic.

I enjoy my Tiptronic. It works great in an urban setting....I can't imagine needing to shift any quicker on public roads. In the mountains I like ALWAYS having both hands on the wheel !! (2006 C2S 4.0 ltr.) ...searching for a 1989 911 w/ G50.

The tiptronic gearbox was over specked for most 996 and 997 has the same gear box also covered the turbo version. The torque converter is huge and the amount of atf oil that it takes is a lot. To top it off the oil filter is rather big as well. When I serviced my car they let me watch it and also they warmed up the oil to a certain temperature and then they topped it up to the right level. Another thing that I did at the same time was to change the drive gear oil as well as it is separated from the gear box. When I drove it off from the dealer I could tell immediately the gear change was smoother in particular in manual with sport mode on. Total cost was around €500 for the service because it really takes a lot of transmission fluid but now I'm fine for another 70k miles at least.

Everything you need to know : 1 It is not a manual, If you are into real fun driving, but aren't hard core into track days: you want a manual 2 unless you have a wonkey knee or missing a leg, or sit in half an hour Tjam per day: get a manual 3 If you do have a wonkey knee or missing a leg or sit in half an hour Tjam per day or are very hard core into track days : get a later model with PDK instead of a TipTronic.

Have multi drivers...even visiting friends...of varying ages. Seasonal changes include ski rack. Of note thru it all have not even had the possibility of an over rev. Economics...a few hundred for occasional fluid changes vs my 3rd pedal friends w the extra zero on the bill due plate, disc, fly, seal, oh and Trans drop. It really makes it a safer cheaper daily driver

Surely the vast majority of 928s and cabrio 944s were automatic. If they didn't have Sportomatic or Tiptronic (cabrio 968s would have had a Tip), what sort of gearbox did they have?

Can anyone here tell me the difference between Tiptronic and Tiptronic S? Are they the same? I ask because I’m stuck out here in Japan and just picked up a 996 turbo last week. Listed as a Tiptronic. I’ve seen some here listed as Tiptronic and some as Tiptronic S. I can’t find the difference.

There may be other differences, but the Tiptronic S has buttons on the steering wheel which allow you to change gears. Enjoy the ride. They are all great cars.
