Actually two things. ONE short blow downs like open mufflers. Polishing doesn't do anything. In fact can actually hurt as laminar flow actually cuts effective cross sectional area of the port, a fluid dynamics thing . By raising the exhaust, that hurt you a tiny bit. Also unless u have stuffers in the crank like a 550, adding case volume can hurt a bit as well. Of course it's the "sum" of all the changes that matters. Back to the exhaust, that little Piston Needs MORE time under pressure on those not less if your wanting torque. I cut the cylinder base to get around 0 squish, THEN cut a popup to get around .018 squish in the final form. Gets more punch & effectively adding compression along with lowering the exhaust a bit. Love the video format and enthusiasm :)
I LOVE you Walt! I am so proud that I got you to watch my channel! I have watched and learned from soooo many of your videos. Thanks for commenting. I watched your 555 build up, but I'll watch it again with more of a critical eye. This build I did end up giving a bit more torque over stock, as it holds its rpm better in the cut. I did another video putting it up against my ThunderKitten (ported Echo 4910) with a 22" bar. With all that bar buried in red oak, it was able to hold its rpm and walk away from it where the ThunderKitten slowed down under the heavy load. So even though it isn't any faster in smaller wood, it really holds its rpm in the bigger stuff, acting like a much bigger saw. I was so impressed with it that I went ahead and purchased myself a Redmax 5000. When I port it, I will concentrate on doing things as you suggest to raise compression and keep the exhaust roof lower since I now know that you can't really get any more rpm out of these but you can substantially increase their torque.
I bought a 545 mark II as a farm saw. I cut a ton of trees every year, probably 15-20 full grown oaks and several pines, hickory etc. This saw is incredible out of the box; reliable, strong and manageable all day long
Best video on saws I’ve seen and appreciate honest saw talk. New subscriber here with a 2013 545 Auto-tune Husk w/ 18” stock bar and .325 chain. I love it!
I ran a 550xp and it was a great cutter once you learned how it liked to be ran. Very impressed for a high cut speed style saw. Thanks for your knowledge that you give us all through watching your experience
I’m glad I watched this video before I got into modding my 545 thanks! And I’m with you on the torque over speed. Although I’m just a firewood arborist!Lol
Very happy to see that you didnt try to exaggerate the gains that were gotten (or not gotten) from porting that saw. That is why I keep coming back. I like that I can trust your word and your opinion is honest. Thank you for posting the true results. Also, looking forward to seeing Hot Rod and SOFT HANDS STEVE!! HAHA! You did a great job with those characters of yours. Love it.
You saved me from tearing into a couple factory saws. They run great already, but it's good to know there aren't a lot of gains to be had. You validated Husqvarna delivers greatness from the factory. Love my saws, Husqvarna (545 mkii) and Stihl (400c), so not biased. They're straight up great saws.
400c i was not impressed with it i have a jonsered 2172 and that thing smoked it while running a 28” bar and the 400c was using a 20” only a 3 cc difference
I'm fairly new to your channel and I can appreciate your honesty and willingness to poke fun at yourself. Good info and great content! Btw, Your intro is classic... Cracks me up.
I dont have much experience porting but every video i watched on the 550 mark 2 said that the air flow was constricted. Are opening up the muffler a bit it definitely helped, especially by not needing to be run at the highest rpms for a good cut.
I sure looks and sounds better under load to me! On the downstroke there appears to be little to no change, but the tug up looks slightly better! If you were porting for torque, I believe you got some gain!
Really good video. I thought the side by side comparison was pretty surprising because I honestly ain’t very familiar with that model. After porting it definitely seemed a little stronger an consistent but it was so close finishing. But like you first set out to accomplish, you wasn’t trying to make a performance saw, but just a strong working saw with a little more torq. So mission accomplished.
Great video! I've just torn into a 545 M2. Also noticed the super short blowdown right away. And that the exhaust side of the piston and upper transfers are black. It seems to be a pretty dialled saw from factory with the exception of the what I can only assume to be emissions regulations encouraging husqvarna to choke their mufflers and and re-burn their exhaust gases.
@@novicelumberjack If I end up getting a bigger lathe then I’ll do it myself. It’s a real pain to cut the squish with my small lathe.. I gotta step up my lathe game and sooner than later.
You've also shown well, how a strong smaller saw 50cc (16" or 18" bar) can cut quick through big wood, because of maintaining faster chain speed (with a shorter bar and without the load of larger sproket) along with a sharp chain.
Can't wait to see this saw against the Thunder Kitten! I've had good experiences with the 550xp mark II, and the 545 seems to handle the same, great saws.
1st, haha! Seriously though, glad to see you back. I’ve got to go to a neighbors and cut some wood for him and all that he wants is for me to haul away the wood, it just happens to be good firewood as well. We’ll see how it goes!
It did end up livening up and had considerably more torque. Noticed it with a longer bar. With the small bar, it wasn't any faster because it could pull it just fine, even in stock form, but when I switched to a 22" bar and in bigger wood, it wa capable of holding rpm better and therefore faster. It pulled a 22" bar as good as a stocker pulls an 18" bar. So in the end, I did get what I was aiming for. Watch my other videos with this saw and you'll see what I mean.
I keep looking at getting a 545. I need a 50cc class saw. I'm an Echo and Husqvarna guy. The 4910 & 501p are great saws but I want to be different and let Husqvarna handle my next 50cc class saw.
Awesome video man You’re the man for being a man. A little tidbit of information that I hope may help not you cut out of the cylinder and made flush with the transfers when the piston is it bottom dead center it covers that up and slows down the transfer of fuel Transfer before bottom dead center You can scallop the bottom of the piston lining it up with that same area be sure and take some measurements so you don’t Freeport in my experience you can only take about half to 2/3 off the piston that you take off the Cylinder. If that makes a lick of sense
There good saws. you got some good content and you make me me Laugh. That’s a 2 for 1 lol. I have a 550 xp mark 2 on my bench I can send yon pic. If you have phone number to seen to.
If you have to work in the elements all day every week, just the idea that your saw is ported and you are getting more done than without it is a mental leg-up. You wont run tests like these on the job, so if it feels faster, its done its job. Even tough lumberjack guys have feelings.
Awesome content 👏 👌 👍 🙌 😎 Started my channel inspired by you! I'm also going to do a nock-off of the wack-off lol we should race 🏁 and build videos... I have lots of the same saws! I follow your old channel and came to this one! Thanks 😊
Almost like husky knew what they were doing with that super short blowdown😂😂😂. Can you make more gain from those? Maybe sure it’s possible, but them things out if the box are amazing running saws. Good vid Boady keep it up 👍🏽
I just ported one of my two 545 Huskys. My experience is , if you go to 78 Intake ,she comes rich barking out of the idle ,if you let her idle 30 seconds after the cut. like she´s overfueling. You can hear it at 10:01min. I went to 100 ex and 78 intake with stock Trans and throw a Red barn Popuppiston in to compensate the less Compression caused of the less 4 deg Ex Timing. She cuts real Nice with s tiny Mufflermod, but i think 78 is to much for mine. Please show the Mufflermod. I Dyed mine like yours and it seems ,that the Cover turned out kinda violett like mine did. Starter is dark black like mine. Maybe it hast du do with the age and heat that got to the Cover. Brand new Covers turn out dark black.
What is the reason for pulling out on starter cord before shutting off saw ? I’ve seen several videos of this but never knew why ? Thanks for sharing 👍
My guess is that since it's a auto tune saw the computer always making adjustments is probably why you aren't seeing the drastic changes you normally would see.
Nice job ya torque is sometimes better and love my stock 545 mark 2 and was wondering if I had it ported if would make difference and this video just answered that question lol
Hang in there, today's Wack-Off is going to really showcase what the porting did for this little saw. It isn't faster in small wood, but boy oh boy, did it come alive in the big stuff!
I only run ported saws have for years. XS saws are my favorite. Kevin is an incredible guy. His work is exceptional and his saws are extremely powerful. Stock saws just don’t do it after running a ported saw. You have really got to be careful WHO you send you’re saws to because there’s too many HACKS out there pretending and only want you’re money.
I've only seen Kevin's saws on his RU-vid channel and they look excellent. I have been told of him before and his abilities. Seems very solid. This evening I will be posting a Wack-Off between my Briso ported Echo 4910 and this 545. I'll say this, the 545 came alive with a long bar on it, and the torque I was hoping to get from the porting is abundantly clear. VERY happy with the results after further testing.
@@novicelumberjack I think you will see a little bit of a gain on a ported saw but probably not as noticeable as if the saw was stock with just a muffler mod
Difference between the 545 and 550 the 550 has stuffers the 545 like the 555 does not. The mark2 I’ve done you delete the base gasket the piston stops on the band.
I see that I would only give you a Chinese machine for cutting wood it's okay if it breaks. Of course, it is no problem with a lying tree everyone can go there, there can be no problem
What was the squish and compresion before and after porting? If it had gained compresion it would have alot more torqe. My ported 550 mark2 is night and day stronger than my muffler mod only 550mk2.
Do it. I've always been a bit hesitant of the Jonsered 2252 because I thought I would never be happy knowing the 550xp mkII was out there. Not anymore. Tonight's Wack-Off will really showcase the torque the porting made with this little 545.
Yes they have restricted caps like the 365 X-torq. You can replace ALL THE TRANSFER CAPS on the 545/550, 555/562, 565/572. The transfer caps along with crank stuffers are the big differences between the saws.
All those saws share the exact cases within each cc class. The transfer caps being larger & less restricted in all the XP models. The 4 series is the only homeowner, non professional offered by Husqvarna. All the 5 series are professional grade. XP model just getS MOAR POWWA.
@@jerseyjoshua4818 So, sounds like you are saying that they are smaller and therefore more restricted, not necessarily a "restriction" inside it...right?
@@novicelumberjack Boedy correct. You can switch the caps on the 365 X-torq and essentially turn it into a 372. I do believe they have different cards on the 3 series. That's why I was telling you to switch the caps on the 2258, so you'd in essence make it a 2260/562.
@@Fishinmech24 watch this video of a 550 Mark II with pulling a 32” bar stock and tell me that a 545 is better ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gr0vG0wqYoc.html
I don't do small jobs like that. Far too much time to be worthwhile for me. Try a channel called Southern Firewood. He's a young guy trying to earn a buck and I betcha he'd be interested. He is building me a muffler for my 372 clone saw. I'll show it on my channel when I get it.
