Portland debuts first AI radio disc jockey

The first AI-generated radio DJ, "AI Ashley," has launched in Portland. It's generated by RadioGPT and originates from the voice of a real disc jockey. NBC News' Noah Pransky talks to the content director and DJ at Live 95.5 about how it will impact jobs and how creative it can be.

Ashley doesn’t know how advanced AI is. She is creating a template for AI to copy human behavior and then create from it with the intellect of google.

My uncle was a radio personality and voiceover worker for local radio stations before a forced retirement due to disability. Working for one station was hard enough. The pay was so terrible that he wound up working for a group of radio stations as well as trying to have a sidegig as a freelancer commercial producer. He had to do a lot of specialized IT for himself with Macs to set up audio things like Pro Tools, which he needed a Mac for. It was expensive and hard to keep up with, and he produced high quality stuff that he was paid a pittance for. Replacing a human in radio with an AI seems like yet another way for business owners that don't give a crap about their employees to replace creative, job-deserving human workers with a lower quality imitation. I hope it fails. I really do. Because if it doesn't this is where things are headed.

We are working on heading this off at the pass ASAP..A.I. is still klunky, but getting smarter..adding empathy, etc..as a talk show host, and a DJ/broadcaster for over 30 years, I know that my skills will be the thing that can't be copied...yet..I was asked already to sell some of my voice bits...I have declined, but next time they might not "ask"...time to lawyer up I guess!

A lot of AI is just straight up shameless investing in replacing human jobs sadly. I don't know how this formula is going to work in the long run though. I mean Capitalism is this nifty clever concoction someone thought up, where everybody pitches in for pay and thus services are provided which everyone benefits from, while everyone makes a living too. On paper it looks pretty good. But now some greedies are figuring out how to provide the services and collect money without hiring anybody. And what if everyone does this? Eventually no one will have any money to buy the stuff they're selling right. Everybody has to pitch in with Capitalism, or the system eventually breaks down. "Who will buy your cars, if you don't hire American workers?" said the Union boss to Henry Ford right. Yeah, that was about right. Look what happened to Detroit. 😬

First were club bands, then came the Radio DJs. For decades a radio show was run by multiple people. The moderator and a bunch of engineers which run the playback machines and mixing desk. Over time technology got rid of the engineering part leaving two people left until just a few years ago. The moderator and only one mixing engineer who was in charge of the broadcast mixing desk and playback supported by automated technology. Now we have things like automix and self-op studios were the moderator is able to run a show totally by himself with all the announcements without any engineer in the back. So for decades radio technology is all about workflow efficiency. The next step will be AI driven moderators. Music, weather forecast, traffic alerts. All these announcements will be done with AI. Real human moderators will find themselves more and more in podcasts if anything imho.

Next step... Stop using humans as voice models. Generate entirely new voices and you don't have to pay royalties for the use of their voice/identity. This will hit movies as well within the next couple of years. Lifelike movies with no actors to pay.
