The taxi shown when they are supposedly leaving the airport is a Buick LaSabre. But when they are being dropped off at the coffee shop, their taxi turns into a Ford Crown Victoria.
The reason for that is a Buick LaSabre is synonymastic with Freudian sub-cultures and undercurrents of newness from the birth from the vaginal waters that cascade over the sub conscious trivialities of life but the Ford Crown Victoria is all about arriving and stiff upper lipmanship upon with or to which bequeath upon the savage beast of what not what we knoweth.

Are you serious? You realize that the "cultural appropriation" stuff that makes you clutch at your pearls.. treating a little kid in a mulan costume for halloween or some white dude with dreadlocks as if they were just taking a dump on peoples' graves... ...you realize that in many non-anglophone regions of the world, that's still considered amusing and benign, right? And that Japan is like the world HQ for what you would call "cultural appropriation"? If you get professionally offended, then Japan is not for you, because the concepts you're talking about don't carry any weight over there. On the other hand, if you like exploring silly and outrageous ideas without other adults scolding you like a kindergartner for it, then it might just be a good match.
I feel like the vibe to a lot of these videos is some weird inside joke that may or may not actually exist, but its so funny in execution that it really doesn't matter.. this is great! and im SO glad that this is a thing

My 1st waitress job, I was living in a small Northern California town, north of San Francisco. A big tour bus of Japanese tourists stopped at our restaurant & loaded into our banquet room & I was taking orders from everyone, and they all giggled and said “Orange Juice, tee hee”, I was extremely confused and the restaurant owner, George said that we were the land of orange juice bc it was California, lol. This was 1976 and truly bizarre to very young me.
I agree, I think that's why I like it. I wasn't sure about Portlandia at first, but the more I watched it the more it reminded me of Tim and Eric...to an extent. I think it's just a less bizarre/more controlled version of that humor so a wider audience can appreciate it.

The fashion is like 15-20 years out of date though... The whole Harajuku/Gyaru thing died ages ago. Nowdays they should be dressed in baggy, shapeless layers of brown/beige/black.
Thank you for having a sense of humor, Kari. People who are getting upset by this are overreacting. Japanese culture, whether modern harajuku stuff or traditional, is amazing and unique. Sometimes silly people just like doing impressions of zany Japanese pop idols (or their fans). It's not racist or mean-spirited.
I actually assumed this was a parody of japanophiles rather than Japanese people themselves. but I guess we can all get a little star struck if we go somewhere we've been wanting to go.

it's not racist, it's not making fun of Asians *for being/existing as Asian*. I assume there are (or were around this time) a number of Asians (Japanese?) who tour Portland for the coffee and act like this, there is a reason they chose to film this and not because of "racism". I think it's poking fun at a subset of "fish out of water" (maybe there's a better phrase) tourists to Portland, that could be any race visiting any country that is not their home country.
