Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Not only highly informative but because of your engaging personality without a trace of egotism or arrogance, you draw the viewer into the video. This approach makes it feel like you are talking directly to me ("me" being whomever is viewing this video.) All this adds up to making the viewer more relaxed and therefore more receptive to the learning process. Thanks much, Glyn.

I’ve been slowly building my home studio lighting over the past few months with modifiers and an additional light. Your suggestion to practice one setup at least 20 times was sooo on point! That’s all I’ve had through the COVID quarantine but I can learn even more from your videos. Thank you!

Hi Glyn, great video! I really appreciate those little details you throw in like the reason to use a light meter or the fact you make just one image or the slowing of tethered shooting which you sell as advantage. Great way to see it, those things stick forever in my otherwise forgetful mind :)

Thanks for the discussion of slowing down and crafting each image. It’s an approach I’ve been wanting to adapt to for my client work but I’ve been in the habit of shooting tons of shots. Ironically for my personal work I often go into that with one shot in mind and that’s often all I get. I’m going to change my approach.

Thank you , this is real world stuff . I had to find own way to this point too and it is as always and everything in the fine detail but even then this vid has helped me a lot . To help others I was over eathering to focus light where I needed it but still these angles when all the time when I see you do not also vertically feather that the result I want is just the impact of the inverse square law metering from the face with a modifier in so close , thanks for an amazing honest vid , A .

I shot my first wedding the other week and guess wot created real class = bringing a studio backdrop kit , one strobe and a 5 foot octo positioned just like you have done but more vertical coz it was a wedding and wanted I bit more open look but the dimension was there . I have found that like Annie and classical artists one thing stands out which is capturing from our 3d world into a 2d dimension and creating dimension and I found people may not know why but they feel it and see the diff so now I stand by this , classical is classical and has stood the test of time for good reason . I had the cheesey fun photo booth stuff happening but guess wot ? word got out and people flocked for a decent portrait while they had a chance . I could have easy created flat lighting which would have worked but people see the diff .

Hello, thanks for great video as always my question is it necessary to use color checker for general shoot like head shot or family ??
@glyndewis
@glyndewis 6 лет назад
Grey card yes, color checker maybe not so much. Only tend to use that if I'm doing a series of pictures from the same shoot and consistency is vital eg photographing for a client when the colours being a perfect representation of reality are an essential part of the final picture...does that make sense?

Fantastic tutorial thank you ! One thing I’m confused about is the difference between using a continuous light vs a flash ? Do they produce different results or is it pretty much the same thing ?
@glyndewis
@glyndewis Год назад
Flash gives you much more control over the lighting in a scene as you can use faster shutter speeds to knock out the ambient. Continuos light also doesn't freeze motion like flash. There are advantages and disadvantages of both but I prefer flash due to it being so flexible in use.
@thewhiskeycowboy-official
@thewhiskeycowboy-official 6 лет назад
Mannequin head tip: If you want to reduce secular hot spots you can paint it with spray paint the flesh tone you like/want. If you use a flat paint you will reduce reflection. And adding a winter hat on it, you can get almost a "hair" affect and difference in shadows and falloff. You can do this as well with any other type of hat/cap you may want to have when doing portraits. Hats with brims add another complexity to lighting that unless you practice it can really cause issues with the model/client at the time of the shoot. That said, you can practice the same thing with glasses.

First off, your videos are excellent! On that group shot towards the end of your video, how do you keep the light even? You'd think that the people closest to the light source would be much brighter in spite of the fact that you are feathering the light.
@glyndewis
@glyndewis 6 лет назад
Tammy Bogestrand Hi Tammy. Ok so this is because of Inverse Square Law which basically says that ‘when you double the distance from the light source, the power / output is halved’ and so it’s all about placing the people / group in an appropriate place. I’ll do a short video photographing a group to show this in the next couple of weeks 👍🏻
@TammyBogestrand
@TammyBogestrand 6 лет назад
Oh, wait...just remembered. You had used two softboxes in conjunction, correct? Ok...I think I can see it now. So you have one BIG light source at a 90˚ angle to your subjects, feathering the light, so the fall-off is the same 'pattern' as with a smaller light source and one person.

It,s ok my dad had a good life, he was his own man and he took the news the same way as he always did, "cant live forever" he said to the doctor, if what i have said helps anyone then this could be my dads last bit of good as i had never heard of a PSA test before, so it could do some good btw my dad was 81 when he died
