I always though the main carbon sequestration was in the root/trunk of plants rather than the leaves? I don't see how the leaves of grass can do as much for carbon sequestration compares to a forest when they're constantly being chopped off and decomposing letting all the carbon out... P.S. loving these shorter clips from the podcast, much more accessible for me :-)

Carbon sequestration is a process that happens through photosynthesis in which the plant is taking carbon dioxide out of the air water from the soil and sunlight energy and converting it into bio chemical energy that is translocated to the roots of the plant and exuded into the soil to feed the microbes in exchange for nutrients. It’s only when a diverse microbial biomass is present to resynthesize that material into a stable humic polymer that we get true carbon sequestration. It is also only possible when the nitrogen fraction of the organo-mineral complex is fixed biologically. When we use high analysis salt based fertilizer and toxic chemicals as a part of land management then we are inhibiting the fungi that facilitate the this “liquid carbon pathway” and not sequestering carbon permanently and not utilizing the potential for our soil as the largest terrestrial carbon sink.

Thank you for asking this question. I wasn't sure how to answer this question because I don't completely understand the science behind it all. Mark provided a great answer. I bet Matt Martin would also be able to add to this as well. Thank you for watching and for your support!
