Yesterday we spoke to Alan Bates about the postal scandal he helped expose, and today GMB is joined by Postal Affairs Minister Kevin Hollinrake. He says he would support any criminal prosecutions following The Post Office scandal and criticises the CBE awarded to its former Chief Executive, and explains plans to compensate claimants by August 2024.

Compensation is obviously a priority but the real issue should be tracing and prosecuting those responsible for this atrocity. They very quickly threatened and prosecuted these poor people and now drag their heels to ensure that justice is done. This is an absolute disgrace.

Isn’t it marvellous all the lawyers in this fiasco have been paid, yet the people who have been criminally prosecuted and lost their livelihoods are still waiting. The directors of the post office no doubt got their salaries and bonuses over the last 20 years or so. Truly shameful and disgusting

It is utterly unbelievable that Post Office Investigators and Prosecutors would embark on industrial scale prosecutions of their workforce and not suspect IT problems when the common factor in all prosecutions was the new IT system. Claiming that Post Office Management and computer supplier failed to disclose problems with the IT system is no defence - when does lack of common sense become negligence? Post Office Investigators and Prosecutors should be ashamed of themselves and be subject to police investigation.

Agree. It was as though the post office was investigator, prosecutor and judge. It was like medieval justice and a witch trial. Our Horizon computer has found you guilty! The state bows to the all powerful horizon computer system and will put you in jail.

What now puzzles me is why only a fraction of the convictions have been overturned. They are talking about 1000 people either convicted or sued using false evidence and only 93 have been quashed. Why is the legal system dragging its feet? People should be assisted now to clear their names, remove the stigma and gain recompense matching the years of suffering caused.

The government/Post Office wasted £40 odd million in legal fees that could have been saved and gone to the sub-postmasters if they had just admitted liability. As usual the only winners are the lawyers (and the 'little man' and the taxpayers are the losers.) Disgraceful really!

Make no mistake. We can isolate individuals and prosecute but this happened because of a toxic culture that exists within the Post Office that also exists in many other corporations and organisations. There are many 1000s of organisations like this that do not listen to their hardworking workforce. They are arrogant and uncaring. Yes , this is an exceptional high profile case , but don’t fool yourself. This whole affair tells us a lot about the state of Britain today.

Something not discussed here, and I gather the Government did not allow to be part of Public Enquiry, is the Post Office being both the investigator and prosecutor. As highlighted in partr 2 of the TV drama it came to light via the Second Sight investigation that even when the Post Office knew there was no real evidence that people were "forced" to plead guilty to lesser charges for which there was no proof. This would not have happened if the cases were prosecuted by the CPS.

Exactly. The PO are acting like a separate legal system where there is no oversight and there was no burden of proof put on the prosecution side. And the other disgraceful thing the PO did was to steal peoples' life savings and use them to bump up their profits. This is how corporations treat people, government is just another corporation.

This power predates the police and organisations such as the CPS. So the Post Office was acting as judge and jury in effect on their employees. We have investigated ourselves and found ourselves innocent, as is common for in house investigations. They then used the courts to rubber stamp their judgements and to apportion the blame and punishment on their employees using an archaic contract not fit for the modern world of work. Those who orchestrated this within the Post Office need to be made accountable and one obvious name is Paula Vennells CBE. Also the greed of Fujitsu who kept quiet about their role in this botched software rollout and oversight of it’s day to day operation. Shame on them all.

I watched the interview with Alan Bates then this interview and straight away noticed that there was some difference in what each was saying about the payouts and to me it looks like the Postal Affairs Minister is still lying .. So Paula Vennels is truly sorry? Rewarded and awarded but not sorry, so don’t use words that you which you don’t know the meaning of Ms Vennells. I notice that the shear self-guilt of what she put people through didn’t stop her from becoming chair of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London, a position she resigned from (as well as a position of an Anglican priest) ONLY because of the quashed convictions of 39 sub postmaster’s. This heartless woman should be in jail herself.

These bosses should be in Court for destroying livelihoods and driving many to suicides! Alan Bates is a remarkable campaigner for justice! It’s called Perverting the Course of Justice, a very serious criminal offence under Common Law. Triable on indictment only (Crown Court) carries max life imprisonment.

Paula Vennells needs to hand back her CBE, give her £400,000 bonus plus half her pension into the compensation fund. Fujitsu should also be held accountable for their part in this fiasco by paying a similar amount of compensation to all sub postmasters, after all it was their system that created the problem. Custodial sentences need to be handed out to ALL those responsible.

The problems with Horizon started before it became operational.The system was chosen even though the trials of all systems put it 12 th out of thirteen but it was cheaper..It was supposed to be installed free of charge in return for a small % of benefit card transactions that were to replace benefit books.Halfway through the installation the benefit agency pulled out of the agreement and the Post Office had to fund the rest of the installation leaving the PO with a 600million deficit that the then business secretary used as an example of how badly the PO was performing and the need to make changes even though the Government had caused it .

Another question relating to this scandal is who backed the Postmaster's litigation? The court awarded the JSPM's case £58 million but they were told only £12 million would be left to share, between 550 litigants, after the backers got their percentage!! Who would take that much of a cut from these poor people? This whole criminal scandal by the so-called justice system is shameful.

Why waste the 40 million on lying and especially the CEO who also is or was a priest dishonest despicable and shows no morals whatsoever. Just shows you them at the top just think they can just treat you like you’re something on the bottom of their shoe. The 40,000,000+ could’ve been given to all them that needed to be compensated instead it’s just drag it out yet again absolutely disgusting. At every level they need to be dealt with, prosecuted and sorry doesn’t even cut it.

There are already multiple people from the post office who are saying that they 'can't remember' in response to questions being put to them in the inquiry. They are still hiding behind lies. They won't say anything that will incriminate them, they will just keep saying that they can't remember. Personally, I think the Post Office should be closed down in its entirety.

The truth is this scandal should have never been allowed to happen in the first place. When the horizon came into force it was soon known there were problems where none existed previously. What happened then must be criminal and deserves retribution

It is not compensation, it is reimbursement. It is money owed and reversal of wrongful convictions. In addition, compensation should be made to address the damage done to people's lives, their reputation, their livelihoods, their loss of property, their relationships, their mental health, their physical health and sadly for some families their loss of life. Such a travesty of justice.

I totally agree. This is not just compensation but repayment of money taken from sub postmasters fraudulently by the post office. This should be repaid with interest plus compensation for the inhuman wrongs done to them.

Well, let's hope .if the post office is to blame. They can pay compensation to all families affected . The post office was a good place to work and be part of . . But the layers and layers of management. Bureaucracy. it would appear no one would take the Responsibility for anything..And as always the wrong people got the blame and some went to prison!!!! Typical.

Amounts to a complete white wash of seriously bad IT contract covered up by Fujitsu & Post Office management over decades. So where is the ripped off millions £££ & why are there been No prosecutions ????
