RoadToUK is proud to present our new InFocus series, where we provide just what you want to know in a snap!
Post graduation (PG) in the UK is a long and diverse road for a doctor after taking PLAB exam or getting GMC registration in some other ways. It’s a lot to think about after you’ve achieved GMC registration and started working in the UK. The lack of knowledge about the whole path ahead of you may land you in a situation where you tell yourself you could’ve done it differently. So let's talk with Dr. Ibreez Ajaz about post graduation and specialty training in the UK!

One question- Can someone with more experience in the respective field (and ofcourse with MRCP) enter directly to the ST4-5 level or everyone should start at ST3 level??
@RoadToUK
@RoadToUK 4 года назад
ST3 will slowly be phased out for some specialties that are requiring 3 years of IMT but as is, if a specialty starts at ST3/4, that is the level at which training applications are taken. That means if the recruitment happens at ST4 you just can't apply or start at ST5-6.

@RoadToUK

If you change to an work visa, you need to check the provisions of your student visa first to see if it is allowed. Doctors working in the NHS can still do degrees alongside it, but the degrees are part time and started after already being on a work visa.

You don't have to do foundation training if you've done an acceptable pattern of internship, but to proceed into specialty training, you have two options. You can either do Internal Medicine Training (3 years) and then specialty training (4-6 years depending on specialty and subspecialty) or if you are qualified, you can apply for specialty training and bypass IMT.

Hi Dr. Ibreez, thank you for that video. You've been really helpful in making me understand the UK system of medical education. Thank you so much. However, there are some questions that still bother me. I am interested in General Medicine, and so after FY2, I apply for IMT which would go on for 2-3 years after which I apply for ST. Is it mandatory to take ST? If I don't decide to do ST what would I be called? What is my designation? If I am to apply for ST, at the end I'd be consultant right? I would like to know what I'd be called at the end of core training or IMT. PS: I'm from India, finishing my internship soon. I would like to know what is the equivalent of IMT in India, also if ST is equivalent of MD General Medicine.
@RoadToUK

IMT will not give you any sort of completion qualification. You'd essentially just be a medical registrar at the end of it. You cannot equate IMT or ST as you've mentioned.

I am Dr. Ishita Mondal, MBBS graduate in the year of 2020 from India. Currently I am working as a Resident Medical Officer in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. I will be moving to London in August’22. In parallel, I am planning to appear for PLAB (Part A) examination in 2023 and taking preparation for the same. I have few queries regarding PLAB and GMC to start my career at UK (London). It would be really helpful, if you can kindly clarify the queries below: • Can I work having dependent VISA as a doctor in London, whereas my husband will be holding ICT Tier2 skilled work VISA (LT) • Can I get any jobs in London as a MBBS graduate with only English test certification till I clear PLAB (both part A & part B) and get the GMC registration number? If yes, then how to start searching

I don't know how to thank you. You have cleared a lot of confusion I had. Major respect 🌸🌸 I am a third year mbbs student in India. None of the Indian post graduate degrees are recognised by the gmc. So can I get that 'academic' PG in DNB surgery in India and then try PLAB for getting into surgery core training in the uk??

@RoadToUK
@RoadToUK 4 года назад
Walaikum assalaam. If you have the opportunity to do so, you can. Remember that the NHS is a free healthcare system that is readily available to everyone, so a private clinic would need to fill a niche that the NHS is slow to fill.

Hello...i have done my MS Gynecology..so after MRCOG, can i enter in specialist pool directly (ST 4/5)...and how much i will be paid there.. My specific query 1. Probability of getting through after clearing MRCOG 2. which ST i will be there(ST 4/5) 3. HOW MUCH I WILL BE PAID 4. How long i will have to undergo that training to be labeled as consultant there Thnx in advance
@RoadToUK

1. You'd enter at ST3 IF there are vacancies. As OB/GYN is run-through, it starts at ST1. There is a second recruitment at ST3 if there are vacancies. Please see: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wQnOhssR8zE.html 2. If available, and you are eligible, it would be ST3. 3. Please see: roadtouk.com/blog/a-doctors-pay-in-the-uk/ 4. Plab does not require internship. You need an acceptable pattern of internship for full GMC registration. Please see: roadtouk.com/blog/gmc-approved-internship-and-ukfpo/
