Postpartum Depression (PPD) affects anywhere between 10-20% of new mothers and birthing parents, but not many people talk about it. More than “baby blues”, PPD contrasts with societal expectations that new parents should be over the moon with joy about their baby’s arrival. Ongoing stigma related to mental health also silences discussions about PPD.
PPD symptoms can include intense sadness, anxiety, mood swings, and fatigue, all of which affect the parent’s ability to function and care for the baby. In rare cases, psychosis can even occur.
