potential problems with the 2015 Dual-Graphics MacBook Pro 15"

This is the MJLU2LL/A* ...... a special order 2015 15" MacBook Pro. The highest possible specifications available for the A1398 chassis laptop, and it is really wonderful. But does this device hold up as a professional working machine for 2019? In this video, I hope to answer this question. After all, why write off technology from 2015? It's still pretty new. And it even has an AMD R9 M370x GPU, which is a powerful chip! You may bash me for spending nearly $2600 CAD on this thing, but I think it has some merit.
Don't you wish you could easily perform battery replacement on the Macbook Pro 2015 15"?

For those still interested in picking up a MacBook Pro 2015 with the M370X, another creator made an excellent video detailing the process of replacing thermal paste in these A1398 laptops! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bUnm-korNUE.html

I'm totally down with the thermal paste job, I will instead choose a laptop with some more serious wear and a cheaper price tag. It seems very silly to me to spend that kind of dough on a laptop that's not perfectly functional🙈

I’m blown away. This video makes no sense. Your logic is the same as saying “I bought a newer 2015 vehicle and for the price I paid I shouldn’t have to get the oil changed”. The thermal paste is a very quick, simple, instant fix that would literally change your entire opinion about the machine. Why would you go so far as to hunt down the exact specs you wanted, finally find it, pay roughly $1700 USD, and then draw the line at a $7 syringe of thermal paste for optimal performance????!
@realmup3r

Yeah, thats the point i don't get at all. Brilliant video, but your assumption about the effort to change the thermal are simply wrong. It's an easy and fast fix for your complaints about that macbook. I hope you did give I a shot after all!

I just picked up this exact model with upgraded SSD for $899 USD. Had the same issue with heat and fans. Replaced the thermal paste with Corsair TM30 compound, gave it a clean OS install and cleaned out all the dust. I bought this after this video. I did a repaste and a thermal pad mod to make the heat pipes transfer heat to the bottom plate. I also have a fan control app running and I'm undervolting by 150mv. It idles in the low to mid 30s, RU-vid at 1080p60 it's in the low to mid 50s. Under cinebench running it spikes to 100 degrees and spikes down to 50. The cinebench score is 1440 CBs. Geekbench is 4600 single, 16,100 multicore. In the freezer the cinebench was over 1500 CBs and geek bench was up 100 for single and 300 for multi.

The way I see it, you have two options. Take a 2013 or 14 with upgraded graphics, or go straight to a 2016 or 2017 touch bar. The 2015's have pretty much the same processors as 2013/14, and you have to pay a lot more for a 2015 model, I just don't think it's worth it. Keep your 2012 as long as you can, and if you are going to invest in an upgrade make it worthwhile.

If you still have this laptop I would open it up and clean out the dust build up inside with some compressed air that could be the cause of the high temperatures you're seeing . A lot of used Macbooks have never been cleaned during their life spans, when it comes to electronics dust kills.

This could certainly be an issue. Unfortunately for me, I'm looking to spend my free time actually doing my work (photo editing, producing videos etc.), and any time I spend on computer maintenance doesn't make much sense for me. I just picked up a used 2015 locally for all the reasons you mentioned. Fully aware of the thermal issue, I opened it and applied new thermal paste. Idle CPU temp dropped by more than 10 degrees (C) to about 40 and max temp stayed around 90-95 under heavy loads. Applying thermal paste is VERY easy and cost less than 10 bucks if you already have tool to open the apple screws. Go ahead and do it.

Excellent video. Really liked it. I am confused between the same configuration as yours - 2015 15 inch MBP and a Mid 2014 15 inch MBP (with Nvidia dedicated graphics with 16gb RAM and 512 SSD). Force touch Trackpad and SSD read and write speeds are the only major differences between the 2 models. What should I go with? 2015 15 Inch (1TB SSD + AMD RADEON) or Mid 2014 15 inch (512 SSD + Nvidia 750) ?? My use is casual and not heavy video editing. I would prefer something that lasts longer and cooler. Force touch Trackpad and SSD speeds are the only differences that I am concerned about. I am getting them both for the same price of 1000USD. Could you suggested which one would be a better buy ?

My dad has this exact MacBook Pro (His work bought it for him as he's the senior graphic designer there) and from what he's said to me, he loves the thing and we both refuse to get the new macbooks because of the horrific feel of the butterfly keys, but more importantly, whilst my MacBook Pro 13 inch is silent 80% of the time, his, for seemingly no apparent reason will kick its fans into hyperdrive, apparently it's a known issue with the radeon powered macbooks where they just decide they want to get really hot for no reason and blast the fans

It's just like your daily driver car. Sure, you could buy an older car and work on it yourself and it's not too hard. You could tune it up, replace the spark plugs, do a stage zero and all of that... but at some point, it makes sense to buy a unit that just doesn't have issues. In this case, I would buy a project car and have fun fixing that on the weekends, but have a no-nonsense daily driver.

Did you try w/ Iris Pro only? I was curious of the difference if using the i7 2.5 w/ R9 M370X vs the i7 2.8 w/ Intel Iris Pro only? For medium photoshop & some 1080 editing. Update: I use for 1080 edit (4k capable, just tad slower) w/ R9-M370X on the i7-4980HQ 2.8GHz to external Cinema Display. ! or 2, it can only run AMD GOU so it will get warm so changing the thermal paste helped. Artic Silver No5 is awesome. It's so easy on this model as the GPU & CPU heatsink is right there as you remove bottom. Bing bang done. Or "Bob's your uncle" as Nan wold say.If you realy wanted 4k edit power for half the cost & don't need to be mobile w/ it, old Mac Pro single hex core is good w/ AMD R9-580X 8g, w/ room to change out for 12 core later. It's Westmiere EP low TDP so 1 gen older then in this but high end Xeon. I use my late 2012 Mac Pro 5,1 dual Xeon X5675's for exactly that workload when I need it.

Maybe that program is using internal GPU & not the dedicated GPU - see if there's a way to make sure hi end GPU is used. ow to Disable Graphics Card Switching on MacBook Pro This will disable GPU switching and force the MacBook Pro to use the higher powered discrete graphics card rather than the integrated GPU. Go to the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences” and then go to “Energy” control panel Uncheck the box next to “Automatic graphics switching” Note the text which states this may decrease battery life on the MacBook Pro “When automatic switching is disabled, your computer will always use high-performance graphics. This may decrease battery life.” - if you are not OK with that do not disable this option Close out of System Preferences You can always return to the Energy preference panel to re-enable the GPU switching feature if desired. For MacBook Pro users who want to manually control their GPU use, you can use a third party tool like GFXCardStatus which has been around for quite some time and still works on most modern MacBook Pro models as well. As mentioned earlier, most MacBook Pro users will not need to adjust this setting and should not adjust this setting, instead letting Mac OS determine what apps should use what GPU as necessary. Rarely, if you discover some game is not properly triggering the GPU switch, you can turn the feature off to force the discrete graphics card to be active instead. That’s usually the result of a bug in the particular game or app, so updating the app first would be a good idea to see if that allows the game to use the intended GPU. If you are toggling this setting for gaming performance reasons, you might also want to use this trick to improve game performance on MacBook with Retina displays too, which uses lower resolution but can dramatically boost frame rate. I haven't had any heat issues at all with my 2.5 Ghz/Discrete Graphics. So it might be an individual machine issue.
@SpencerLupul
@SpencerLupul 5 лет назад
@@movdqa Every device is different of course, the 2.8 ghz model does run hotter than the 2.5 for sure, it could stand to reason that since it runs hotter overall, the fans are on more often, creating more of a draw of dust into the machine over time. That would continually reduce the thermal performance, and weaken the thermal paste too. And yes, our exchange rate, plus the import duties and whatever make this an expensive laptop. There's an apple used supplier in canada that is selling a few of these at around $2400 with top specs and no graphics card. eBay prices for them have remained rather stable over recent months though.
@movdqa
@movdqa 5 лет назад
@@SpencerLupul The 2.8 Ghz model should run cooler than the 2.5. The 2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 Ghz processors come off the same production line and are binned as to the speeds that they can hit in a given power envelope. So they are designed to use the same top power level but some run at 2.2 Ghz, some run at 2.5 Ghz and some run at 2.8 Ghz. So the 2.8 Ghz is more efficient. It can get more work done than the 2.2 and 2.5 Ghz models for the same amount of power. So ultimately, your 2.8 Ghz processor should run cooler and give you longer battery life than the other processors. And this is why you pay more for the faster processor besides getting your workload done faster.

It would have easily went over 1500 but I asked him if he could end the bid right there for 1050. Some reason, he accepted and I bought it for 1050. The guy definetley didn't realise how much his Mac book was worth since it was sealed in the box. I Was looking for a MacBook with those specs for a while and getting such a good price for it while it's Brand New was crazy. How will Apple support it with software updates?
@SpencerLupul
@SpencerLupul 4 года назад
At the moment, the latest version of MacOS (which came out Oct 7) eliminated native support for pre-2012 models of the Mac. So, that’s 7 years of backwards comparability for the current OS. Doing the math, you could guess that the 2015 Retina MacBook Pro will be natively supported until around 2021/2022, and even after that will likely still run last years version. That’s still a solid 3 years of Native support, and with the build quality of this laptop you could still squeeze 5 years out of it in my eyes.

One easy fix- Re-install MacOs that originally came with this MacBook=ElCapitan or Sierra will without doubt help run your OS & video files fast while keeping the fans quiet. I had many MacBook Pros back since G4 PowerPC to Intel Core duo days & the Original reinstalled OS was hands down always the fastest bar none. Sure I could run the latest Yosemite or El Capitan but at a hefty price. CPU & Fans would max out instantly doing video editing. Earlier graphics drivers screamed on later hardware. Sure you 2015-16 Macbook Pro may run the latest Mojave MacOs but at a hefty price - Go back & try Yosemite & I bet ya your MacBook will fly doing the same video editing without maxed CPU or Fans. From experience.... ☮️
@SpencerLupul
@SpencerLupul 5 лет назад
I see your point here, I definitely have seen videos that show evidence to support this. However, for myself I do want to be on the latest OS to keep my devices secure and also with maximum compatibility, as I find myself constantly downloading new softwares to try. It's just not worth it for me to stay on an old OS, especially for a $2600 used laptop. If I'm going to spend that kind of coin, I may as well buy a lower-spec 2016/17 Pro. Even the 13" without Touch Bar is a really capable computer that I would consider as a daily working machine. Thanks for the comment 💙
@SpencerLupul
@SpencerLupul 5 лет назад
Also, saw your comment about the graphics switching. Don't worry, that M370X was in full use. From the reading I've done that particular card does get pretty hot when in use, and my testing backs that up. I think the thermal limitations of the 2012 Retina design sadly are eclipsed by this faster clocked CPU and powerful graphics.

Reek. No 1800$ is not worth it for a 2015 way to much. The new ones have much newer processors. Much better thermals ( well at least the 2016 compared to the 2015) screens are better. A lot of other things. Reparability does get worse as the you go up in generations tho. I don’t get my people complain absolutely type c. It’s much better than type b or any other usb. It’s faster can transfer power data audio and video all in one. I guess I understand tho. Dongles are annoying.
