Agreed, MBP mid 2015 15 inch (16gb memory/1tb storage) is still a very good laptop. All I've had to do to optimize performance is replace apple's thermal compound with Artic Silver, air can all dust away from fans/logic board and replace speakers. Runs even better than before.
since I never read 1000s of comments, its not my priority, All I wanted was to see and hear, if the 2015 MacBook Pro was any good. Since I purchased one 3 years ago, and I agree with everything Russel said. Can sleep better now, one question though, how long do you think this laptop will last ?
I have a 2015 MBP 13 and I absolutely LOVE it. Never would have guessed at the time how much better it would be than the recent model years with all their issues. It still works very well for my daily needs 5 years later. Easily one of the best tech purchases I've ever made. That said, I am finally going to be upgrading to a 2020 10th gen model since they finally brought back the scissor switch keyboard and made a lot of other noticeable improvements that I think it's finally worth buying. Something that always forgets to be mentioned about this era of MacBooks is the MagSafe charging adapter. Brilliant design that they've now ditched in favor of going with all Thunderbolt ports.
My 2015 Macbook Pro has only 128 GB. I plan to upgrade it to 1 TB using an adaptor. Much cheaper than buying those OWC SSDs. Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade 2013-2015 Year Macs (Amazon).
I have the same model for the last 6 years, and it has been an incredible device, which I started noticing nowadays. It made me finish my Bachelor education with no issue, I got prepared all the homeworks, all the programming parts, all the things related to the school on this device. I am even now continuing my Master's with the same device as well, and it is still excellent. For years, I even played CS:GO with my friends, with the help of the BootCamp that setup the Win10 to my external harddrive. Nowadays I started thinking of upgrading my MBP to a newer model, like 2020 model M1 chips, however overall I noticed that my 6 years old grandpa is still so valuable and enough for me. It has much better sides compared to the newer models: keyboard, Bootcamp compatibility, design, Magsafe charging, I/O plugs (I even have a HDMI port, which I am in love!). So in this case I thought this is not going to be a good decision to get a new MBP by paying more than 1200 USD. I now just proceeded with Apple to a new battery to my MBP, as well as all the topcase including a new keyboard, a new trackpad etc. Then I am planning to get a SSD upgrade as well, for a better speed and size. Overall, these replacement will cost me almost 300 USD, however they are worth it. I really love this model and I had no information when I first purchased it in 2016, and it was my first MBP. Now I am so glad I still own this device, especially after I saw the crysis with the new MBPs 2017-2019 etc. (When I first saw the butterfly keyboard, I knew it was terrible and not reliable, so then this was agreed by the whole community as well.)
I’ve had my mid 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro for about five years now and it still works like a champ. That thing has carried me through college and into a software engineering career. I’m going to be cleaning it out and replacing the thermal paste soon on the CPU and GPU and I believe once I do that I’ll still at least get another 2 to 3 years out of it before it starts to bog down.
Definitely agree with everything he said, I own a 2015 MacBook Pro Retina 13in 8gb ram and 500gb of storage and it’s great, i don’t see it slowing down anytime soon
Are you happy with your late 2015 Macbook Pro is it still perform today ?? can you watch video go pro in 4K définition correctly and are the videos smooth and not jerky plz man? excuse me for my bad english i'm a frenshman, Do you recommend it ?
SCARY Supra I am still very happy with it. It is the Retina version so video quality is amazing. It is never jerky or lags, i’ve never even had to ever reboot it ever. I highly recommend it!
Watching this on MBP 13" 2015 model and I agree this thing is great. Still as fast as day 1 and battery is still great. Using it since last 4+ years, running Catalina right now and it's very fast. Not just MBP 2015, I'm still using iphone 6 and have same feelings about it too xD
This is the first time I'm thanking the ad targeting algorithm from google/youtube, I swear I was just about to buy a new MacBook Pro and I was like mmm... maybe I should do some research...and there you go, you popped up on my recommendations! LOL this is insane... I guess i'll stick to my 2015. thanks for helping me make my decision.
Great video. I still have my 15" MacBook Pro 2015 and it is great. Just something to be aware of you can not upgrade the RAM on it however you can upgrade the storage which I would recommend. I upgraded my storage to Samsung 500gb ssd NVME drive and re-applied the thermal paste to the logic board. I also cleaned the fans and all the dust build up from 5 years. It runs great. Unfortunately do to not being able to upgrade MacBooks internals my next machine is going to be a PC build due to being able to upgrade and repair. Last great MacBook Pro.
I don't know who out there needs to hear this, but if your 2015 MBP is running hot (which I imagine a lot are at this point) it's super easy to get the proper tools to open it up, clean out the dust, and replace the thermal paste on the CPU. I did it earlier this week and I can't believe how much better my computer is running from such a simple fix.
You forgot about the lighting of the apple logo. That is what makes me not want to upgrade. I agree also about the ports and the SD card slot. Very important
Late 2013 quad i-7 @ 2.3ghz/16gb ram/512 SSD/15'' Retina, battery with less than 20 cycles Dual graphics 2gb GT 750m/1.5GB Iris. Magsafe, thunderbolt, usb, SD, HDMI @ 4k....ports! Got mine for nothing as ebay screwed up, can edit 4k timelines in FCP...what else do I need? Yeah the 16'' are nice and have great speakers (And kernel panics apparently), but the 2013-2015 models were virtually identical save GPU swaps in 13/15 that perform minutely better in the 15's. Im sticking with mine, love this thing, add my JBL bluetooth speaker, save myself thousands....and dont forget all the dongles you will need!
You can add additional +3 years to your laptop by replacing the thermal paste and upgrading the battery. Battery replacement is not really difficult on those models, it's just about removing stickers beneath the battery cells.
I sold my 2015 16ram 1tb SSD got the 2019 16inch from Best buy in 2021 the screen is better on the new one but for some reason I keep thinking about my 2015 15 inch. I don't dislike the 2019 but it's something about that 2015 model🥶
I bought my Macbook Pro 2015 Early last week, I love it. Battery 138 Cycle, the last owner don't use it, so this is a new Macbook, everything is clean and new. ILOVEIT!!!!
Thanks !! I’m currently looking on eBay and entered a bid already! Not trying to purchase anything over $650 but thanks !! Super detailed ! I need this for my photo editing on the go.
We have macbook 2015 and just cleaned staingate using listerine. Now im buying screen protector for it. Loving it. Will upgrade also ssd from 256 to 1tb soon.
@@russellscott7733 Russell, one thing I have noticed is that when I use Apple News on it, the fans start blasting. I am not particularly technical and can't account for it (except for, in my lingo, some complicated script). Would you have any idea?
Hey man! Really enjoyed this video of yours. I was taking tips off of others videos and you I love your editing and film style. Bought and reviewed your same laptop last year on my page. Keep up the good work!
Picked one up with 16gb ram for a great price and it’s soo good. If your debating it you should go for it, especially if you’re waiting for the switch to Apple silicon in 2 years. Things to watch out for are web cam issues like if the OS detects it. And sometimes the keyboard and trackpad stop working.
Still using my 2014 MBP for many of the same reasons. I used to upgrade every 2-3 years. I hope Apple watched this to learn what is important to US. Waiting for them to make a new computer that I want.
Im very new with macbooks and i already want one in december 2018 but, the price, models etc. So its April 2020 and 2 days ago i bought a Macbook Pro 13'' 2015 with 8gb ram and 256gb ssd for €450, and its in very good condition, im very happy with this purchase
@@youngforza8224 Im living in The Netherlands, there we have a site called Marketplace but than in dutch. And people can sell there own stuff and i found one for a good price
I have macbook pro 2015 mid i7 with 16gb ram but after an update to catalina I see some significant drops in performance. Now I am upgrading the new SSD disk to make it work a bit faster
Great video! Man I totally agree with you, I have a 2015 13 inch model and it's still running great, planning to upgrade the SSD and stick for another 3 years.
@@ExtraordinaryJam The RAM is soldered on, so no. You can however upgrade the SSD using an adapter, so you don't have to buy the expensive proprietary SSD that came with the 2015 Macbooks. "Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade 2013-2015 Year Macs" There must be other adaptors.
I totally agree with you. I am hesitant to buy the updated macbook pro because they remove some ports and the headphone jack. This is more than enough as a frontend developer.
the catalina system killed my 'macbook2015 air 11inch',it entirely turned my computer into a flat and nice-looking hand warmer with phone-charging function.well done, developers of the system :)

Aftermarket RAM upgrade is not possible on Retina MBP, because it is soldered to the motherboard. You can upgrade only SSD chip in your MBP
I'm getting a MacBook Pro 2015 with the top spec I'll use mostly for RU-vid content I never owned a MacBook before. Thank you for this video I really need to get the top spec then
I basically agree on everything you said! My MacBook Pro retina 15 " 2015 is the best laptop I have ever purchased. I definitely am not a big fan of these new Superlight MacBooks. They definitely seem & feel so FRAGILE, not sturdy at all. Pretty soon they will make them as thin as a sheet of paper!
Watching this on the early 2015 Macbook Pro Retina 13.3inch! Only problem I've had is the flex cable breaking making the trackpad and keyboard not work. got it fixed aside from that still works great! ANYONE else having other problems with this model??
Hey , it seems like the trackpad and keyboard issue is common on the 13 inch 2015 ? I'm using the same model as well and yes I have the same keyboard and trackpad issue...did you replace the ribbon cable yourself?
I’m looking to get a 2015 for music I’ve seen some on eBay spec’d out to how I want it for a decent price but I don’t want to spend the money and get robbed
I've been rocking my Mid 2012 13" MBP daily since new, and it's really starting to show it's age. Nothing in Apple's current product range (in my price range) really appeals to me at the moment. Seems like a used 2015 15" is the move right now.
I just bought one for computer science major. 2015 pro with i7 and 16g of ram. Only downside is the ssd size, but for price I can get a 500 or 1tb, and still be much cheaper than a new MacBook pro. Paid 600 for it. Battery has 332 cycles. Got it from an older tech guy.
I have a late 2015 macbook pro without a cd drive. I was trying to figure out whether to have it repaired or get a new macbook. I will keep my repair appointment.
I just picked up a Mac book 2015, 15" with dual GPUs for $395 at Black market. I went with the "excellent" classification and after examine it for 10 minutes I cannot find a single mark on it. It could pass as brand new out of the box from 2015. I also have a 2012 13" MacBook Pro non-retina that I bought new in 2012. That is why I decided to invest in this at $395 it's gonna last me well over 10 years.
I agree on all points! And why produce a sleek MacBook then require that you have unsightly dongles protruding from every orifice to be productive. I have two 16GB bodies and am dreading switching to a new model. Though the latest ones do have SD readers back, do there’s that.
I had the lowest spec model (2.7 GHz core i7 8 gb) of laptop back in 2017, but just last month I replaced the logic board to the 3.1 GHz core i7 with 16 gb of ram. Like you I refuse to upgrade to that dongle life lol, this is honestly their best laptop. Although I think the new 16in comes close. I think this will last me a few more years now. I would look into replacing the battery next because this COVID19 epidemic has me working from home so I'm wearing down the battery all day every day and night. I think it'll be fine with a new battery with a few calibration cycles. I am also training to be an apple technician and so I'm comfortable taking apart my machine and putting it back together.
i have a mid 2014 A1502 13in. has lastest me years thru school and work. Does need a new battery , bluetooth chip, screen and updated memory but i love the HMDI port tho very clutch.
Hey man loved the video so I had a couple of questions on it i am planning on getting a macbook pro 15 inch with 16gb ram and 256 gb ssd and I am primarily going to be using it for picture and video editing it falls in my budget as well - this is model without the dedicated video graphics - do you think this 2015 MBP would fulfill my needs (side note videos will not be 4k just some 1080p videos for RU-vid) .
I have to agree buddy. The 2015 is a very good model. I find 8gb ram enough for what i use it for but admittedly i upgraded the ssd with a 2017 256gb for less than $100. MacOS Catalina runs fine, the keyboard is just fine too. I think the 2nd hand Macbook market is a much trickier as people will be selling their 2016-2018 models with the keyboard issues so buying one is a little more risky than the 2015. Its probably worth keeping the 2015 for another few years and wait for the 2020 2nd hand market to materialize.
I own a 2020 MacBook Pro and the one thing that is dearly missed is the SSD reader. Besides that, the 2020 is a bit thicker than the 2016 and up to support the new non butterfly keyboard and the processor runs laps around the 2015. Regardless the 2015 has held me down for years and def is a nice buy if you don't want to shell out 2 grand for a high end 2020 MacBook Pro.
I actually refurbish and upgrade older MacBooks first a living. What this guy said is spot on. Just be careful when you’re on eBay, a lot of shady sellers will misrepresent a computer to get you to buy. Don’t get me wrong, eBay’s support will always have your back but it’s the waste of time that sucks.
Hey Russell! I have the 2015 macbook pro and love it too. :) However, the new version of adobe premiere does not run smoothly like it used to! I can't use it to edit anymore. Do you have any suggestions??
