Potting up rooted rose cuttings. I am sharing with you how I pot up my rose cuttings that have now rooted.
I opened up the containers that I had placed my rose cuttings into in my How to Root Rose Cuttings video (link will be below and is in the cards of this video).
The rose cuttings were in the containers in my greenhouse (not heated or insulated) for about 16 weeks.
I share the good, the bad and the disappointing! You can learn from my mistakes.

I recently tried this and my cuttings are budding but no roots yet. Some of the cuttings are getting a little white fizz on the top. Is there a way to avoid this from spreading?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 6 месяцев назад
Take a cotton swab and dip it in a solution of 3 parts water and one part hydrogen peroxide then wipe away the white mold. If you have them under a cover, open it once a day to let them get better air flow.

@FlowerPatchFarmhouse

It varies with the outdoor temps. It is not insulated so does not maintain a stable temp. It is more of a glorified cold frame.

I did the same way last year,I growed some climbing rose cut in the Starbucks cup, that's the only time I succeeded on rose cut. Then I forgot to transplant it in the pot. All of them died after the cold winter, i am not sure if I should pot them and bring them inside the house or just leave them in the pot and outside ,not sure how can I save those young baby rose during winter.

You don't say where you are located but you could bury the pots in the ground and mulch around them well and see how that works.

I have a video on DIY potting soil. I add a some worm castings to the mix. The worm castings are very mild and won't burn the tender cuttings. Once I see new growth of over an inch or so I also will use a liquid organic rose fertilizer at half strength once a week when I water.

HI. I WANTED TO ASK YOU SOMETHING. AFTER YOU GET THEM ROOTING IN THE PLASTIC JUG CAN YOU PUT THEM DIRECTLY INTO THE GROUND INSTEAD OF ANOTHER POT.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Год назад
Yes, you can but keep a close eye on them. They are still tender and not as tough as they would be if you grew them a bit larger in containers. But many do start roses directly in the ground too.

Would #1 chicken grit be more economical than horticultural sand?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Год назад
I am not sure as I have not made a cross comparison. Come chick grit is made from crushed granite alone and others have additives. I have used the pure granite form as a cover for my seed starting and it worked great but I did not compare the cost. sorry.

When I have the most luck with rooting cuttings, I follow the stem down to where it is hard but still pliable, then I cut it right below a leaf node, I pull off all the leaves except maybe a couple on each side at top and just stick them into a pot of usually a mixture of potting soil, garden soil, and some peat moss all mixed together, don’t even use a rooting hormone, I take my thumb nail and scrape the green off which is the cambian layer ( about a inch or so at the bottom) water it in and place in a bright place like on the morning sun side. I don’t even cover. And have success mostly every time. I do this with so many things and it works. Butterfly bush and forsinthia , geraniums etc. So many things I have tried in that same manner and it usually works, lol never know unless you try !!!!! 😝

Very good video to actually show mistakes as well..and not just the healthy results. I have a comment and question: 1. You used the same water (in a jug) to clean all the rose roots.. including the one that had mould. This is probably not the best idea..since you hae transferred the mould to the other healthy rose cuttings.. The other question is that.. what do you do when mould have developed on one of the cuttings.. Is it not problematic? I am rooting roses for first time. I took 7 cuttings and 1 of them rotted, while other 6 have also shown new growth in approx 7-10 days..multiple shoots actually. All of them were softwood/semi hardwood cuttings. Does new growth actually means..roots have established? I doubt so but I don't want to disturb my roses yet.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 4 года назад
You are correct, new growth does not mean roots. The cuttings have enough energy to put out new growth for quite some time, in fact I have some cuttings in a jar of water and they are growing crazy (tossed them in the water last fall and never put them in soil) and they still have no roots, not a one. There was some black stuff I call mold which can grow but does not seem to harm anything if I wash it off. I also get it on some of my outdoor roses and again I just wash it off so I was not worried about using the same water to wash the roots. All the good cuttings did great.

It is a pity you did not show the container when you were taking out the cuttings, we do not know if the rooted cutting you have in your hand came from the container you planted in I think in September.

how long did it take to root
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 4 года назад
These were stuck in Fall and potted up in January but really should've been left to continue developing larger roots until later. As I stated in the video in warmer months most roses will root much faster and also it depends on the type of rose. Some develop roots much faster than others so there is no one answer to how long it takes cuttings to root. Many claim 4 weeks for most with optimum conditions.

Thanks so much for making this video . I tried the milk can way you did in part1 end of sep in zone 9b . It has rooted . I don’t have green house and I guess the first frost is end of Nov . Do I plant the rooted roses in pots and leave it out or keep it in window sill inside ? Not sure how to take care in winter as i tried propagating late .
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Год назад
You should be able to easily overwinter it outside. If you are worried bury the pot to the rim in the ground and mulch over top. That will insulate the roots.

When are the cuttings ready to be planted in the ground
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 2 года назад
Give the roots time to really get going. I like to give them a year in a 1 gallon pot then put out in the Spring after super cold weather has passed but hot weather has not hit yet. They will have all summer to get well established before the cold rolls around again.

Back in September, Once you duck taped your gallon jug, how often did you re-water it prior to the following January?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 4 года назад
As needed, there is no set amount. Differing circumstances determine how often you need to water. If there is condensation inside the container then there is plenty of moisture and does not need more. It is easier to over water than under water so always err on the side of caution.

If you don’t have a green house, you don’t mention where you place the cuttings when you are trying to propagate, nor after they establish root and reported. In other words do you place them in direct Sun or shade and how often do you water the cuttings u til they establish root? Thanks,
@chompers11
@chompers11 2 года назад
never direct sun, north side of your house in ~91% dappled light is best for IBA hormone. Ill get way too hot in direct sun, 70-80 is fine for them. Water the soil medium to start and then only water them if they feel dry. Depending on the plant you can mist the leaves with a spray bottle to keep them from losing too much moisture. I know you're worried about them not getting enough water but keeping it too wet will make them rot and die faster trusttttt me. Also you can recreate a greenhouse atmosphere with plastic bags over pots and rubber bands, or plastic bottles, or even big plastic bins (at least partially clear to let some light in and dont keep it closed all the time, open it sometimes)

These were taken in January, setting them outside in the sun won't hurt them that time of year. If your temps get super cold, bury the pot in the ground to insulate. If you are taking cuttings in summer then placing them in the shade (I put them under a tree) is preferred. My other rose cutting videos and blog post which is linked in the description box answers all your questions.
