I've kind of done this and I am actually really proud of myself and my boy because of it. I can't remember where I got all the information for how to potty train my boy, but I remember I decided (purely from his health perspective) that I wouldn't get all Hitler on him about it. My main thing was I wanted to train him essentially where 'not' to poop, namely on me. So about a year ago I started looking into it, watching him intently and figuring out roughly how long between poops, that kind of thing. I figured out fairly early on that he associated pooping with getting a small treat (realised when he started flying to me intentionally to poop, and then not understanding when the treat didn't come). So I re-evaluated my technique. It's probably been about 6 months now of consistently encouraging this behaviour and now I would say we have about 80-90% success rate. I never get angry with him when he poops on me though, like Courtney said, it's a natural bodily function and I don't ever want him to feel like he doesn't want to go. My friends are really impressed when he flies off to his cage to poop, or even that I can tell when he's about to go. So many people in my life have no idea how owning a parrot of any kind is so much like having a child! 🤣
@cazb9981
@cazb9981 3 года назад
@d nuzzio any success rate is great in my opinion! Well done with your progress! We have a similar thing with a large coil spring in the kitchen doorway and some laminated paper on the floor for easy wiping underneath. I have noticed recently though, because of the praise we give him, he has started to fly to his cage/spring and poop when he doesn't need to. This is a bit of a worry because he genuinely doesn't need to go (I can tell by the amount that comes out) so I told my other half that we both need to make everything else he does just as exciting and well praised as when he when he poops in the correct places. I have even stopped using the phrase 'poop time' or any kind of words now so he only associates the action with the praise. It's all a learning curve, and he will forget as quickly as he's picked it up, but as long as we continue learning and adapting, I think he will continue to do well with this. He's not the smartest Quaker around and not quick to pick most things up, but he is a clever boy 💙

@cazb9981 3 года назад
@d nuzzio My Squeaks is so camera shy too. He's very unsure of speaking, but says 'hello' clear as day when he wants something (usually food!) I am very unlucky with my boy though, he worships the ground I walk on and has a fairly bad separation anxiety which means he hates me being out of sight and has a horrible panic squawk or a consistent horrible squawk when I leave the room and can't/doesn't want to fly and find me. But when I'm in the room, he's happy and quiet. So it is a rare time when I hear him chatting away and practising his noises but when I hear it, I adore it. It is so lovely and I often think I can hear him practising a new word, but it happens so infrequently when I'm around, I can never be too sure. My chap hears him chatting all the time though. It's great that you seem to have a routine with yours though. They definitely need to be kept in a routine. Whenever I get a bit down about the way Squeaks is with me even though I have tried all the things you should do to ease separation anxiety in birds, Lee tells me that regardless of how much he hears him regularly chatting away, he has so much more character when I'm around. He's more affectionate and really listens to my commands (most of the time). Basically, the only way he learns anything is from me teaching him and Lee just has to follow what I'm doing to maintain the teaching.

You're awesome! Thank you for this important video. There is a lot of bad information online presented by people who purport to be experts, which can confuse viewers. Bad information can also be dangerous and in some cases life threatening to parrots, and/or abusive to parrots.Thank you for debunking the bad stuff and teaching viewers the right way to teach and care for parrots. On a side note: I was a little confused about the person's advice to put the paper plate INSIDE the cage. Did I miss something? I personally believe the cage should be a FREE poop zone and a place where the parrot can defecate naturally at any time. The purpose of potty training is to keep home and people clean while the bird is OUTSIDE the cage, which can be very helpful. "Specified poop zones", INSIDE the cage, (for example a paper plate) can potentially create a problem if a plate was forgotten or not presented on time. This can confuse the parrot and may make them hold their poop, causing serious health problems. Your message about letting the parrot choose when he/she goes and doesn't need to go, is extremely important. Thank you again.

I generally speaking don't like Wikihow, I usually only use sources that are specifically orientated towards parrots I find the room for error is much less than using some site that is supposed to be covering a broad range of topics. I like your videos because I find them extremely thorough, I also like the Parrot Wizard, and Bird Tricks. I find their videos to be extremely helpful even though how they are both setted up is differently.

Is not possible to start with a primary reward and then move to a secondary reinforcer?

I love your videos, these reviews are hillarious, there is so much garbage put there on the internet. I have just one friendly correction to offer and only since you seem to follow the science as I do (I'm a certified science based dog trainer). Primary reinforces are things that an animal needs to survive. Primary reinforces are most often food but can be mating opportunities or water. Conditioned reinforces are things that we learn to find reinforcing such as how humans find money reinforcing. Thanks so much for sticking to the science and sharing your deep knowledge! 🦜🐦🐾

Have any of you heard of the Omlet bird cage? I was wondering what people’s thoughts on it are and if it would make a good cage for a parrotlet?
@hemalathaj.6759
@hemalathaj.6759 3 года назад
Well in my opinion, I don’t really like the Omlet bird cage because it’s kinda circular, and I bet it must be a little bit hard to hang toys too. But I have seen a video on BirdTricks, and Jamie used the cage for her budgie. I guess go for a a normal cage, but if you really want to, you could buy that cage. I hope you meant the Geo Bird cage? 😅
@ris8065
@ris8065 3 года назад
I personally wouldn’t use it because, in my opinion, it’s a little small for a parrotlet, budgie, or lovebird that uses it as anything other than a sleep cage. BirdTricks does have a video on it but their family can keep Blueberry out of the cage for the majority of the day.

Hello! On the subject of potty training, would you recommend setting up and training potty for the different rooms the bird will be in? I plan to keep the cage upstairs where my art studio is and where there is more activity on the weekends, but I have my office set up downstairs in the finished basement. And I at least want them near, with a play cage that they will enjoy my company and be able to stay entertained, while I work in the same room.
@ris8065
@ris8065 3 года назад
Careful keeping birds near art areas! The smell of acrylic and oil paints and alcohol based inks/markers are bad for the birds lungs. Of course it depends on the type of supplies as pencils, scentless inks, and certain watercolors are usually fine. Just check the items
@icanhazKnit
@icanhazKnit 3 года назад
@@ris8065 thanks for the tip! I am not much of an oil user, but the alcohol markers makes sense and such since they bother me too, of course I would not want my birb to be hurt by smelly fumes, they are more sensitive to those things :)

Sheetha J, when your bird chews plasticized paper and dies, will that be cute, too? Many times you can't tell there's plastic blended into the paper, by the way.

@@lisahinton9682 They don’t ever actually have the paper go in their mouths, and only rarely actually chew up textbook covers. I was trying to say that my house is bird-proof and I don’t mind my birds being messy. Also, the paper I DO give them chew in their cage is 100% non-toxic.

Has anyone ever had their bird INTENTIONALLY poop on them & any ideas on how to handle that one? My bird's been pooping on me quite a bit, I just put it down to being a lorikeet & they poop constantly, but she just did it on purpose, no question! She was biting me when I tried to put lettuce on the top of her cage, I said no & tried to stop her getting away with it, cause I'm fine if she wants to mark her territory INSIDE her cage, but not when out of it. Her response was to do a bottom wiggle & a HUGE poop aimed straight at me, completely covering me! I went & showered to get it off (cause there was that much), stuck my head back in to grab the plastic bag the lettuce had been in to remove the danger (while planning on ignoring her cause that's an effective tool for training with her I've found) but as soon as I stuck my head in, she bottom wiggled & tried to poop all over me again. So now I'm not impressed with the pooping, but also worried she'll hurt herself trying to poop when she really doesn't need to. So seriously, has anyone ever had to deal with this before & any ideas? She used to be largely self trained, while doing step up training, if she needed to poop, she'd step off first, then do it, then return to training, so she does know what she's doing with this stuff & she seriously tried to poop on me a second time, only a few minutes after the mega poop! Even if I could put the first one down to co-incidence, there's NO WAY the second one was! She did it on purpose! little ratbag lol
