Pour and Swirl Glazing - or more traditionally known as Marbled Glazing is a trendy technique where glazes are used with the intention of allowing them to run together and mix a bit to ultimately create a marbled effect.
Use these pointers to remember to increase your success.
- Wet your piece beforehand
- Use a combination of glazes with various characteristics- Use some glazes that are stable combined with some runnier glazes- with a FLUXING nature (That has a lower melting point, and helps to encourage runs)
- Interior recommended- as exteriors could run and cause sticking
- Thin very thick areas
- When dry, rub any cracking to fill the cracks with dust to avoid the flaw of crawling
In this video, I am using Standard 225, a nice midrange firing tan stoneware. I am using Coyote white glaze, sapphire, and cobalt, and Laguna Moroccan Sand MS-15 Robin's Egg.

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 32 years, the past 22 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently, especially with my semester ending “Pick A Passion” projects- see link here: • Pick A Passion Project
I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

My favorite local supplier from whom I purchase my clay and glazes is: cornellstudiosupply.com

Stunning, wonderful idea! I've seen other examples of swirling but they use way too many glazes and it was just a little too loud for my tastes. Your technique is perfect & dead on as alway; well done!

Hawesome! I loved to watch. Please can you show how to glaze the back of the plate

That was straight glaze- not poured and swirled- just three brush coats!

do you do the top and bottom in two different firings? Also how much do you sell a plate like that for? thanks, Donna

I did not do it in two different firings, I just brushed glazed the blue back after the marbled side was dry. For a plate/platter of that size I would probably sell it for $85 or so.

Hi there could you use dipping glaze for this.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass Год назад
Yes- the coyote glazes that I use are dual function of brush and dip!

how wet would you have the bisque? lightly sprayed down or a quick dunk before pouring on the glaze?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 месяца назад
Just a quick dunk or quick rinse- it helps it to not go on too thick! :)

How do I know if the two or three colors of glaze works together and don't damage one the other?

Can I use underglaze for this swirling? Xxx
@KaransPotsAndGlass

Hi Anne- underglaze could potentially work if you don’t put it on too thickly. When underglaze is thick as it dries, it will crack. You even have to pay attention if you’re using regular glazes with this, not to put it on too thick as well because it could crawl during firing. The technique would work if you are careful to watch it and maybe pick up any excess glaze that is puddling with a brush so it’s does not remain thick! The nice thing about the cone six glazes is that they actually will bleed a little bit when fired!

It looked like you had a lot of air bubbles in the glaze before firing. Are those not a problem? Also the thickness looked uneven. Does that even out with firing or just a desired feature?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass Год назад
Any air bubbles pre firing will get buffed and rubbed with a dry hand to fill them with dust. That will help to prevent pinholes during firing. (That along with a drop- hold- soak program I use to cone 6). The difference in layering thickness would be fairly minimal- I tried not to have new wet areas overlap dry areas as much as possible. If I felt I had standing glaze that would puddle I would thin it out some by pulling off with a brush. Knowing character of the glazes you use is key- some will have a tendency to crawl more than others when thick!
