When you're chipper just won't eat a branch instead of forcing it into the blades try spinning the branch while it cuts. Takes much less force that way because the chipper takes bites at an angle. When you spin the branch as it's being cut the chipper blades have less contact with the work and it allows you to feed much faster. If you keep feeding the branch at the same angle you started at then you're allowing for maximum contact between the cut surface of the branch and the cutting head. You end up grinding the branch and putting way more wear on the machine.

from being a wood worker and owning a planner the next step up model makes much more sense feeding into a spinning drum

I agree the model with the same size engine and no shredder is much better.

Hey, great review. I agree with your intro. Most people don’t get to the point and show it’s capability. Best vid I have found yet on chippers.

Check the belt tension before you use it the first time. Mine had a loose belt and it smoked the first time I put a heavy load on it. A new better quality belt helped mine a lot. I have had problems with things vibrating loose. I usually replace the hardware with good quality nylock nuts as they fall off. It is not a bad unit for the money but I think a better blade cutting angle could make it perform much better.

Great review and demo! These are down to $250 online and I was skeptical, but looks legit! Great looking mulch!

Thanks for the review. I’m glad it’s just not me, Anything over 1- 1 1/2” will vibrate your hand to death. Sad it’s that way but at least it’s not me. I really shouldn’t complain, I got mine on clearance for about half price. Seeing some reviews they mentioned a catcher bag which I didn’t get, but sure can’t complain

Agreed. Good thing I only wanted it for garden mulch. There is another model, same size engine, without the shredder that seems to do much better. I never even tried the catch bag, every review I seen said it was useless. The constant need to sweep the chips out of the exit tells me it wouldnt blow them in the bag anyway. Cheers! Thanks for view and comment!

I’m looking at one right now secondhand thinking about buying it

Its ok as long as you dont expect too much out of it. If I could go back and do it again I would have got the next model up with the same motor but without a shredder. It seems to do bigger branches but still make the smaller chips.

I tried to buy one of these from my local Northern Tool. Independence Mo.The manager wouldn't sell it to me. He demanded, "What are you going to use it for?" " I wanted to chip some wood." "What kind of wood?" Suddenly I felt intimidated as if I needed to justify my wanting to buy his product. "Do you not want to sell it to me?" "I just don't want you bringing it back! Besides, the only one I have is buried in the back room and I'm not going to dig it out right now! You should buy another brand!" With that he disappeared and never returned. ??? I'd still kinda like to buy one. Guess I'll have to drive to the other Northern Tool in Kansas.

You would think with the 420 cc would not bog down. Have watched other chippers with only 212cc self feed, and handle larger limbs with no problem. How much is a replacement set of blades?
@goatsofwar7181
@goatsofwar7181 Год назад
Not sure on the blades, but I think this model without the shredder is much better- www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200712320_200712320

What belt does it use and where do you buy it?

I wish I had an answer for that. Best I can recommend contacting Northern Tool. I will keep looking and post here if I find one.

Seems like the knives are just dull. Lots of smoke coming out when you are chipping.
@goatsofwar7181
@goatsofwar7181 2 года назад
I was not trying to be rude. a couple of the reviews i watched falsely claimed smoke as well. There is a constant fine dust that comes out of the top hopper. I was pointing out that for it to be smoke there would be other indications, like not chipping like it should and would smell like burning wood. Or it would be from the belt, which would smell like burning rubber. I think I need to redo this video.
