Practical Dadao with Scott M. Rodell 50% off for the First 20 signups! The Practical Dadao System was developed for Chinese Soldiers during the Early Republic and designed to meet a bayonet head on. At that time, military rifles only carried 5 rounds and were slow to reload. Every army of the period drilled bayonet fighting extensively. The Chinese answered by drawing on their long tradition of two-handed saber fighting. In this course, you will learn the entire Practical Dadao Form (實用大刀術), created by Jin Enzhong, to train troops. Every Form lesson is followed by an in-depth presentation of the Martial Applications of the movements facing a bayonet. Basic Cuts and Solo Drills are also covered. Jin published his manual in 1933. YOU WILL LEARN: - The Complete Form created by Jin Enzhong - Martial Applications for Each Posture - The History of the Dadao - Basic Cuts, Solo, and Partnered Drills - How To Use a Dadao in Full Contact Freeplay against a Bayonet Get Life Time Access for just $99 (Use code Dadao50 to save 50% - first 20 signups only!) www.chineseswordacademy.com/practicaldadaocourse

The ring in the handle is a Chinese dao sword feature. Back in late-Han dynasty ~ three-kingdom period, document of ancient Chinese medicine describe that, to use that ring as a stove to put half of an egg shell on it, above the fire, to make a specific potion(苦酒湯) for sore throat. Although Chinese no longer use this method nowadays, the recipe were still proved effective and apply by the physician in China.

I made that parallel too between the dadao vs bayonet and dandao vs spear from Cheng's manual. I remember I thought that was just so neat how similar it is in concept. Excited for more on this. Be awesome to see how you interpret Jin's 1933 form!

From what I heard, in the late 19th early 20th centuries, Japan and China hired European advisors to help modernize their militaries. Among other things, they taught bayonet fencing, and the Japanese and Chinese instructors modified what they learned fronm the Europeans by adding in elements of old spear based martial arts.There is a japanese sport called Jukendo that has descended from these old bayonet fencing techniques, and there is a popular book in English about Xing Yi with bayonet.

@apolyedapolyed7524

I think one hand wielding a dadao and the other hand wielding an axe is practically effective, as wielding double swords (雙刀) has long been a branch of traditional Chinese martial arts.
